
(PR) AMD Announces 2nd Generation Embedded R-Series APUs and CPUs
AMD today announced the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series accelerated processing unit (APU) and CPU family (previously codenamed "Bald Eagle") for embedded applications. The new solutions are targeted at gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage, industrial control and automation (IC&A), communications and networking infrastructure that require industry-leading compute and graphics processing technology.
"When it comes to compute performance, graphics performance and performance-per-watt, the 2nd generation AMD Embedded R-series family is unique in the embedded market," said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Embedded Solutions. "The addition of HSA, GCN and power management features enables our customers to create a new world of intelligent, interactive and immersive embedded devices."

HP Chromebox Specifications Revealed
Back in February HP announced it was working on a Chromebox (ultra-compact system running Google's Chrome OS) but it didn't say all that much about what hardware it's going to have. Thankfully now we're closer to the actual release of the Chromebox and documentation has popped up on HP's website detailing the upcoming desktop offering.
The HP Chromebox measures 126 x 124 x 39 mm and it packs a 1.4 GHz Celeron (2955U) or 2.1 GHz Core (i7-4600U) processor, 2/4/8 GB of DDR3L memory, a 16 GB M.2 solid state drive, integrated graphics, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, a 3-in-1 card reader, Realtek ALC283 audio, plus HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Early listings have the Celeron/4 GB of RAM-equipped Chrome OS box going for $200 while the Core i7/8 GB version is priced at $660.

Intermolecular, Inc. - accelerating research and development for semiconductor and clean energy industries - today announced that SanDisk and Toshiba have jointly elected to take an exclusive license, in a limited field, to Intermolecular's rights in the intellectual property developed under the collaborative development program (CDP) and Intermolecular's background intellectual property thereto. The related technologies have been developed for next-generation memory.
The companies' CDP with Intermolecular, specifically aimed at developing certain memory products, materials, processes and device technologies, was concluded on March 15, 2014. Under the terms of the exclusive license, SanDisk and Toshiba will prepay non-refundable royalties in quarterly installments over a predetermined period.

(PR) Intel Gains, Nvidia Flat, and AMD Loses Graphics Market Share in Q1
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics chip shipments and suppliers' market share for 2014 1Q. For the previous three quarters, the PC graphics market has gone up. This was the first quarter to show a decrease in shipments since last. Shipments were down 11.6% quarter-to-quarter, and down 4% compared to the same quarter last year.
Quick highlights:
- AMD's overall unit shipments decreased 18.2% quarter-to-quarter, Intel's total shipments decreased 7.9% from last quarter, and Nvidia's decreased 10.4%.
- The attach rate of GPUs to PCs for the quarter was 135% and 33% of PCs had discrete GPUs, which means 67% of the PCs are using the embedded graphics in the CPU.
- The overall PC market decreased 9% quarter-to-quarter, and decreased 3.5% year-to-year.
