New Chromebox Variant Helps Intel Sweep Sandy Bridge Inventory
With its 4th generation Core "Haswell" processor lineup not too far away, Intel is making efforts to clear inventories of its 2nd generation Core "Sandy Bridge" one. Usually, OEMs on the receiving end of such a move stand to score truckloads of chips at discounted prices. Samsung is one such OEM, which may have bagged a ton of "Sandy Bridge" Core i5-2450M dual-core chips clocked at 2.50 GHz, to deploy in its new premium Chromeboxes, which normally use entry-level Celeron B840 chips, because you can't exactly use Chrome OS to play Crysis, and so you don't need a faster CPU. The new, faster Chromebox is listed on Amazon for $423, bearing the SKU "Samsung Chromebox XE300M22-A01US."

Intel Culls Twelve Core, Celeron "Sandy Bridge" Processor Models Intel's spring cleaning began early, with the company discontinuing twelve processor models spanning across the Core and Celeron lines, based on the 32 nm "Sandy Bridge" silicon. The company issued a PDN (product discontinuation notice) to that effect. A majority of these are mobile parts, whose market lifetime is stretched to keep up with OEM orders. Among the chips are the Core i7-2960XM, i7-2860QM, i5-2557M, i7-2637M, and Celeron B710, and 857. According to the PDN, Intel will stop accepting orders for the chips from July 11, 2013, and the last orders will have shipped out by January 14, 2014.

(PR) Soft PC Shipments in Fourth Quarter Lead to Annual Decline as HP Holds Onto Top Spot Worldwide PC shipments totaled 89.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q12), down 6.4% compared to the same quarter in 2011 and worse than the forecasted decline of 4.4%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Although the quarter marked the beginning of a new stage in the PC industry with the launch of Windows 8, its impact did not quickly change recently sluggish PC demand, and the PC market continued to take a back seat to competing devices and sustained economic woes. As a result, the fourth quarter of 2012 marked the first time in more than five years that the PC market has seen a year-on-year decline during the holiday season. The lackluster fourth quarter results were not entirely surprising given the spate of challenges the PC market faced over the course of 2012. IDC had expected the second half of 2012 to be difficult. Consumers as well as PC vendors and distribution channels continued to be diverted from PC sales by ongoing demand for tablets and smartphones. In addition, questions about the use of touch on Windows PCs vs. tablets slowed commercial spending on PCs.

Intel "Haswell" GT3 Graphics Twice as Fast as "Ivy Bridge" At its 2013 International CES booth, Intel exhibited a side-by-side comparison of two systems, one running its next-generation Core "Haswell" processor's integrated graphics, the HD 4500 GT3 (all components enabled), and the other a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU. A highly forgiving DirectX 11-generation title, DiRT 3, was made to run on both GPUs. Visitors noted that even if not as smooth as the GTX 650, Intel's Haswell iGPU did produce playable frame-rates. Sources close to the company have been claiming a significant, in fact, 100 percent performance lead of the Haswell iGPU over previous-generation HD 4000 iGPU featured in today's Core "Ivy Bridge" chips. If true, Intel's graphics may have come perilously close to, or even caught up with, AMD's A-Series "Trinity" line of APUs, which feature the fastest integrated graphics processor ever made.

2013 Could be a Difficult Year for the PC Industry: Analyst Big tradeshows such as the International CES are often used as a benchmark to gauge which areas of consumer-technology are faring better than the other. Industry analyst DigiTimes observed that PC is riding the CES bus on an uncomfortable backseat, which is an indication that the year could be difficult for the PC industry in general. According to the analyst, although PC makers are aggressively promoting their Windows 8 creations - notebooks, desktops, and dockable tablets, - TV, living-room web-enablement, is attracting the most attention. Why this spells a bad news to PC makers is that with web-browsing being the most popular PC usage activity, no longer needing a PC, and doing so on web-enabled TVs could pose a disruptive innovation for the PC. Also, the theme for 2013, with PC makers appears to be more of cutting prices, instead of new innovations. Source: DigiTimes Read More ...

MSI Rolls Out A85XMA-E35 Socket FM2 Motherboard MSI rolled out its second socket FM2 motherboard for the week, following the A85XMA-E33, unlike which, the new board is built into a full-size micro-ATX (240 x 240 mm) PCB. Yet, designers couldn't find room for eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports, which the A85X FCH is capable of handling, or four DDR3 DIMM slots. The FM2 socket is powered by a simple 5-phase VRM that's cooled by a chunky MOSFET heatsink, it's wired to two DDR3 DIMM slots, and a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot. Other slots include two PCI-Express 2.0 x1, and a legacy PCI. Display outputs include DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI; 8-channel HD audio, four USB 3.0 ports, and gigabit Ethernet make for the rest of its notable rear-panel connectivity. Here's hoping that by simply opting for the A85X, without wiring out eight SATA ports, doesn't let MSI get away by making A85XMA-E35 any costlier than AMD A75-based boards with similar features.

SilverStone Sugo SG10 Packs Enough Room for a Serious Gaming Kick Responding to the market's newfound love for gaming-grade mini-ITX cases, Silverstone rolled out the Sugo SG10. Don't be fooled by its looks - a HTPC-esque front panel, with a slot-in slimline optical drive bay, this case packs a punch. Its SECC steel frame can hold on to a mini-ITX motherboard, a double-slot graphics card that's 28-30 cm long (a GTX 680 should fit just fine), a forward-located PSU bay (a 750W compact PSU should fit), CPU coolers over 130 mm tall, and a combination of 140 mm top and 120 mm rear exhausts, and a 120 mm front intake.

SilverStone Mammoth MMO1 EATX Case Detailed, Too SilverStone also exhibited a strange new case that supports longer EATX motherboard (useful for dual-socket workstation boards), but not XL-ATX (up to 10 add-on cards). Pictured below, the Silverstone Mammoth MMO1 is wider and longer than most ATX full-towers, and features two large 140 mm front intake fans that draw air through a radiator. The radiator appears to have enough heat-exchange capacity to support two 150W CPU blocks, if not more. It forms part of the lower-front panel. The upper portion reveals a couple of 5.25-inch bays, and front-panel ports, such as USB 3.0 and HD audio.

MSI Unveils X79A-GD45 Gaming Motherboard After a long sabbatical, MSI unveiled a new socket LGA2011 motherboard, the X79A-GD45 Gaming. Over-simplistic naming aside, the board is practically identical to the X79A-GD45 (8D), albeit with a more dull yet intuitive color scheme. Black and bright blue make way for black and gray, with fancy die-cast covers over the MOSFET and chipset heatsinks. The only other feature that makes it stand apart from its older twin is Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio driver for existing HD audio CODEC, which enhances sound quality over Realtek's driver, and adds a few DSPs of its own.
