iPad loses tablet market share, Android makes leaps and bounds
It seems we're writing more of these articles lately, where Apple's pure dominance is beginning to fade, and Android is making more and more sales and winning the hearts of customers around the world.
ipad_loses_tablet_market_share_android_makes_leaps_and_bounds
According to the IDC's numbers from October, Apple didn't see much year-over-year growth for its iPad, and in the overall worldwide tablet market share, a huge loss for the company. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty estimates that Android tablet sales are generating more revenue than iPads from the IDC's numbers, too.
Huberty said: "For the first time, Android devices accounted for a greater share of the market in revenue terms than iOS. Android revenue share reached 46.2% in 3Q13, for the first time exceeding iPad share of 45.6%. Android's unit share grew to 66.7% from 58.5% a year ago, largely driven by Samsung and Lenovo, while iPad share declined to 29.7% from 40.2%."
Could we see Apple win some of that much-needed market share back soon? We could, with the Retina-based iPad mini and iPad Air out in the wild.

Battlefield 4's latest patch should fix network and crashing problems
I noticed this a few hours ago when I went to have a quick 5-minute game of Battlefield 4, that there is a large 1GB+ patch available. This patch will reportedly address many of the concerns gamers have, with crashes and server failures, and more.
battlefield_4_s_latest_patch_should_fix_network_and_crashing_problems
There's some patch notes here you can skim over, but we should see a big fix in overall stability of BF4 for one. Secondly, network syncing problems should hopefully be fixed, which should have gamers smiling once again. DICE is aware of the issues, and is continuing to work around the clock to address them. DICE has also fixed some holes up on the server side of things, which should give more overall stability to BF4 multiplayer.

Ubisoft announces 1080p update for Assassin's Creed Black Flag on PS4
The People at Ubisoft shipped out Assassin's Creed Black flag at 900p to make sure the GPU and CPU ran the game at a constant 30 frames per second. They will be sending an update to make the game native 1080p. The update will also include an anti-aliasing which will improve jagged edges in the graphics. Anti-aliasing will be available on both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Ubisoft says the update will be available shortly after launch.
ubisoft_announces_1080p_update_for_assassin_s_creed_black_flag_on_ps4
Community manager Gary Steinman: "Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the frame rate never dips below 30 frames per second. The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4."
Associate producer Sylvain Trottier: "The most important part of this title update is not necessarily 1080p native resolution. It's the fact that even when we were done with the project, even when we were finished with the certification and everything else, even when most of the engineers had started to work on other projects - like we always do at Ubisoft - some of my engineers continued to work on Black Flag and they even developed a brand-new anti-aliasing technique."
Steinman also mentions he wants PS4 users to notice the change: "Pay special attention to finer details like the ropes on the ships, and then have another look once the update is installed as an example of the change to resolution."

Some PlayStation 4s are having HDMI issues. Sony sending replacements
There were some reports of users having problems with the PlayStation Network crashing and now some are experiencing HDMI issues with their PlayStation 4. They're getting a message saying "failed output signal." People from Kotaku, Forbes, and IGN are having these problems too. Although this is huge disappointment to some users, Sony says they will replace all the faulty consoles.
some_playstation_4s_are_having_hdmi_issues_sony_sending_replacements
Sonys statement about the HDMI issue: "This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive."
"We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch."
"As part of our normal customer service policy, we've asked those with affected PS4 systems to send them back to us so we can fully test them."
"We are immediately sending these people replacement PS4 systems."

DDR4 memory could make an appearance as early as next month
If Crucial Memory's promotional page is anything to go by, we could expect DDR4 RAM to be released next month. But, this will require new motherboards, and even if you did that, is there a benefit?
ddr4_memory_could_make_an_appearance_as_early_as_next_month
Yes, and it's quite the improvement, and a bigger improvement than we had moving from DDR to DDR2, and even DDR2 to DDR3. DDR4 memory will use 20% less power, deliver speeds of up to 100% faster, and is 100% denser than its predecessor. Most DDR3 is around 1066MHz, but DDR4 kicks things off from 2133MHz, which is a huge increase.
Another benefit is going to be the amount of RAM per stick, with DDR3 seeing 1Gb when it was introduced, and while we have more per stick now, DDR4 will have a sweet 4Gb density. This means we should see much higher GB kits of DDR4, where we should hopefully see kits being at a minimum of 8GB, although I'd like to see 16GB. We should finally see a world of 16GB per module, which will be great for 64GB kits when Haswell-E arrives.

Apple is making a huge cut back in the iPhone 5c production
According to a Chinese report Apple is cutting back even further on their production of the iPhone 5c. Assembly partner ProTek (Pegatron) has cut production to 80,000 units a day from 320,000 units in October, and Foxcon is currently producing 8,000-9,000.
apple_is_making_a_huge_cut_back_in_the_iphone_5c_production
This is probably due to the high demand of the iPhone 5s. A data graph from Fiksu shows the iPhone 5s is 6.4% of all iPhone usage and the 5c is coming in at 2.1%. The iPhone 5c supply is readily available as for the iPhone 5s is showing 1-2 week shipping time from Apple's site.

PlayStation Network crashing due to mass PlayStation 4 logons
The PlayStation 4 was launched today and thousands of people in the US and Canada are having problems logging into the PlayStation Network with error codes such as NW-31453-6 or NP-3500-8 and a message saying "The network connection has been lost." This is due to the mass of activity from people trying to logon their consoles. Seeing that today is still launch day in the US the problem might just be getting worse with the amount of people that that still want to pick up or purchase their consoles today.
playstation_network_crashing_due_to_mass_playstation_4_logons
Sony said that a fix is on the way and are asking users to be patient, but the message from their site has been removed for some reason. Users that are currently trying to download the launch day patch can also go on PlayStation's website and put the download on to a flash drive and upload it to your PlayStation 4.
Sony's message: "The PlayStation Network is experiencing extremely high volume, some users may experience some difficulty connecting. We ask for your patience."

The FCC has released its new Speed Test app for Android
With mobile broadband growing faster than traditional landline broadband, it is important to keep a watchful eye on the companies who sell the service to its customers. Today the FCC released an app for Android that will do just that. The all new Speed Test app from the FCC is designed to inform consumers of the actual broadband speeds their mobile data plan is providing them.
the_fcc_has_released_its_new_speed_test_app_for_android
After installation the app will run in the background on the consumers mobile device and will periodically run a Speed Test scan in the background. The results will then be uploaded to a database that the FCC will use to compare with carrier claims. The FCC says that the app will not consume more than 100MB of data each month, so users wiil data restrictions need not worry.

Google Play Music finally makes its way to iOS
Almost half a year ago, Google announced its music streaming service known as Google Play Music. Much like Spotify, Google Play Music is a monthly subscription-based music streaming service with hundreds of thousands of songs waiting to be listened to. In the beginning, the service was only available on Android and through a Web App, but this morning Google released the streaming service to iOS.
google_play_music_finally_makes_its_way_to_ios
Google Play Music for iOS retains most of the features that are seen on the Android version, and initial reports say that it is very refined for iOS and feels like it is a native Apple-built app. It will be interesting to see how reviews of the service stack up against iTunes Music, and if iOS customers will open up to the $9.99 per month price that is required to access Google Play Music. Personally, I am still calling Spotify the best streaming service on mobile and the web. I have been a subscriber since it hit the US and have yet to find any flaws.

Sony's Playstation 4 gets torn apart by iFixit, is basically a PC
After almost a decade, the PlayStation 4 is here, and the folks over at iFixit have wasted no time in tearing the next-generation console down to its basic components. Using nothing but a T9 Torx driver, two phillips drivers, and a pair of tweezers, iFixit was able to completely disassemble the PlayStation 4.
sony_s_playstation_4_gets_torn_apart_by_ifixit_is_basically_a_pc
It appears that tearing down the PlayStation 4 is just about as easy as tearing down a common PC, and rightfully so as that is basically what a PS4 is. The teardown images from iFixit do lend some interesting insight into the PS4 though. Anyone who was hoping that they could upgrade the AMD processor inside will be sad to learn that the chip is permanently soldered to the board and is not even branded as an AMD device. Instead, the chip is labeled as a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. CXD90026G, a SoC that features AMD Jaguar CPU Cores, and Radeon Graphics Cores.
sony_s_playstation_4_gets_torn_apart_by_ifixit_is_basically_a_pc
Additionally, places around the APU, are 16x Samsung K4G41325FC-HC03 4 Gb (512 MB) GDDR5 RAM for a total of 8GB of video RAM. Samsung's K4B2G1646E-BCK0 2Gb DDR3 SDRAM is also present in a capacity of 8GB. The PS4 should have no cooling issues either, as a massive air-based cooler is present that appears to be made mostly of copper for maximum thermal dissipation. When it was all over and iFixit had removed the last screw, they awarded the PlayStation 4 a repairability score of 8 out of 10, which means that it will be easy to fix in the event of any hardware failures.

Edward Snowden took over 200,000 documents according to the NSA
Just how many documents did Edward Snowden take from the NSA? Well, earlier estimates had this pegged at around 50,000... but it looks like the whistleblower took close to 200,000 documents.
edward_snowden_took_over_200_000_documents_according_to_the_nsa
This is coming directly from NSA General, Keith Alexander, who wished "there was a way to prevent" further leaks, and that information was being out out "in a way that does maximum damage to the NSA and [the United States]." This should mean that Snowden has enough information on him to keep him alive, or at least an asset to Russia.
We've seen what has happened to previous whistleblowers, like Bradley Manning and Michael Hastings, but it looks like Snowden has his fair share of information to keep him safe, for now.

nio Card wants to upgrade your wallet with NFC and high-end sensors
If you're like me, you hate having to carry around your wallet and smartphone, as an all-in-one solution would be so much better? On one hand, I want a digital currency to roll through, something I can have "on" my smartphone, like Bitcoin - but I don't see the powers that be letting that happen anytime soon.
nio_card_wants_to_upgrade_your_wallet_with_nfc_and_high_end_sensors
Well, until then, we have nio Card on Kickstarter, which is an upgrade for your smartphone, turning it into a wallet with NFC and high-tech sensors. This means that when the nio Card and your smartphone are within range of each other, you'll also gain a bunch of exclusive nio apps that will "keep your digital life secure and your personal possessions safe."
The nio Card is only 4mm thick, and connects through Bluetooth for the utmost simplicity. This means that the nio Card will fit anywhere, your pocket, wallet, bag, and more. You can store your banking details, passwords, and more through the nio Safe app, which can only be accessed, and opened by you, or your nio Card. Better yet, nio can even offer up dual-factor authentication for super, business-class security.
Can it get any better? Yes it can: there's also 2GB of USB storage built-in, meaning you can keep some of your personal data on the built-in storage. I did say it can get better, with the nio Card being capable of replacing so much of the contents of your pants (yeah, I went there) and your bag (or handbag). It can replace your credit card, keys, and your wallet.
The developers are working on a nio Card that will attach to your front door, so that when you get close to your front door - with your personal nio Card in your pocket - it will unlock the door. As for your wallet, they are offering a custom wallet made from leather, specifically designed for nio Card by Italian designers.
Bluenio require £35,000, and at the time of writing they had hit £8,159. I'm looking forward to this device, so I hope it hits its required funding goal!

Blizzard says it was a mistake to offer offline mode in Diablo II
Blizzard's on-going issues with Diablo III are a big talking point amongst avid fans of the game, and the tech/gaming worlds in general because of its lack of offline mode. But now there's an interview between Rock Paper Shotgun and Lead Designer, Kevin Martens, who has some interesting things to say:
blizzard_says_it_was_a_mistake_to_offer_offline_mode_in_diablo_ii
I don't think people necessarily remember how mad they were that they had an offline mode and online mode in Diablo II. People will be like, 'I wasn't mad!' But I was there at the time, and then I studied this for a living. It sucks when your friend or brother is online and he wants to join this game, but you realize you're an offline character and he's an online character, and there's no way to transfer over because offline characters can be hacked and hex-edited to hell and back, right?
This looks to be the reasoning behind the developer not pushing offline mode into Diablo III, but I'm sure they could find a way. What do you think? Are you a Diablo III player who wishes there was an offline mode? Let us know in the comments.

PS4 and Xbox One side-by-side, the PS4 is the more compact console

South Park's latest episode tackles the next-gen consoles
The next-gen consoles are really taking up our lives right now, with South Park jumping on board in its latest episode. The episode uses a Game of Thrones-style battle, where they beat other customers to great Black Friday deals.
The kids obviously want the next-gen consoles, so the PS4 vs. Xbox One battle begins. Better yet, the kids are all wearing the outfits that they'll be wearing in South Park: The Stick of Truth, with the episode taking the time to take a stab at the fact that the game was delayed - a nice touch. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, which is great as Black Friday is getting closer and closer, and so is the Xbox One.

I've just watched the episode, and it really pushes the differences between the consoles, with the kids arguing the points between the Xbox One and PS4. Cartman even says "let these Sony f**** wallow in their limited voice control functionality". Some classic Cartman right there!

What happens to the PS4 when it's shot with a high-powered rifle?
Guys and girls, this is what happens when you shoot Sony's next generation PlayStation 4 console with a high-powered rifle. It explodes, in a beautiful fashion, in slow motion to make it look even better.
Rated RR took to shooting his PS4, which might sadden people who don't have their console yet. Maybe he should've shot the defective ones going around, because I'm guessing this unit worked - and while it's beautiful to see, it does pull at some heartstrings.

Sony announces a new Uncharted game for the PS4, possible reboot?
The PlayStation 4 has just launched, and just as I'm wondering why there's no system-seller, the Japanese giant goes and teases a new Uncharted game for the PS4.
There's absolutely nothing known about the game, other than Naughty Dog is back developing. But, we could expect a new Uncharted game that doesn't feature Nathan Drake, which would be a disappointment - unless it's done right, and it could revolutionize the franchise, hopefully. We should expect more in the coming months, hopefully some gameplay is shown off on the next generation hardware!

Hands-on with the BeagleBone Black, a 32-bit Micro Computer

Introduction

hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
Earlier this summer, a new development board hit the market that has proven itself to be a worthy contender against the legendary Raspberry Pi. The BeagleBone Black arrived on the scene back in April, and was met with great fanfare as it provided similar functionality to the Raspberry Pi, but with a much more powerful processor, faster RAM, and several times the GPIO ports.
Naturally, when I first heard of the BeagleBone Black's existence, I knew that I had to have one. Unfortunately, my BeagleBone Black arrived at the same time life caught up with me and it sat on my workbench for a few months. Today, I finally get to sit down and introduce you to the BeagleBone Black.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
The BeagleBone Black features some pretty powerful hardware that is packed into a tiny, credit card-sized package. Sporting an ARM Cortex A8 processor that is clocked at 1GHz, and 512MB of DDR3 RAM to keep things running nice and smooth, this little microcomputer development board is one of the most feature-packed hobbyist level development boards of all time. Additional features include 2GB of on-board 8-bit eMMC NAND flash memory, two PRU 32-bit microcontrollers, and an on-board USB controller that provides power, connectivity, and networking through the mini-USB port.
The BeagleBone Black also features a 10/100 Ethernet connection, PMIC, serial debugging headers, and onboard HDMI output. One of the biggest features on the board, however, are the very prominent double row headers that are stacked on each side of the PCB. These headers house 96 GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) pins, which can be used to do just about anything you can imagine. Finally, the absolute coolest feature is the Black's ability to run Linux or Android straight out of the box. In fact, the Black ships with Angstrom Linux from the factory with Node.js pre-installed, and thanks to the USB network connectivity and Cloud9 IDE, you can be up and running within minutes of plugging in a single USB cable.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
The BeagleBone Black arrives in a pretty plain package, which bears the usual product images, logos, and a cute graphic of a beagle in a black tuxedo. The kit appears to be manufactured in the USA by Circuitco, a PCB manufacturing house. Circuitco has posted a neat video showing the assembly process, which can be found here.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
Upon opening the box, we find the BeagleBone Black, a USB cable, and a useful "Getting Started" card. The Black comes sealed in an anti-static package that protects it from any accidental static electricity discharges.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
BeagleBoard.org includes this handy little "Getting Started" card which walks you through the setup process, something we will cover more in-depth in a little bit. Much like the Google Chromecast I recently reviewed, setting up the BeagleBone Black is about a simple as it gets.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
Upon inspecting the BeagleBone Black a little closer, we can see that this is nothing like the Arduino you have in your workbench drawer. The Black is a sophisticated piece of hardware, and rightfully so as it is a fully functioning Linux PC that has been shrunken down to the size of a credit card.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
Flipping it over, we can see even more of the minute and almost microscopic SMD mount components that make the Black tick. Here we can also see the micro-SD slot, the Mini USB, and Micro HDMI connectors as well.
hands_on_with_the_beaglebone_black_a_32_bit_micro_computer
Let's flip the BeagleBone Black back over and take a look at some of the major components that make it such a great board. You will first notice the large 1GHz Sitara AM3358 microprocessor from Texas Instruments with the 512MB DDR3 DRAM chip from Micron. Also visible is the 2GB NAND flash memory chip from Micron. A USB host port, serial debug headers, boot button and reset button are also notable features. On the next page we will dig a little deeper into each of these devices and learn a little more about them.

QNAP TS-470 4-Bay SMB NAS Review

Introduction

qnap_ts_470_4_bay_smb_nas_review
If we were writing this review three years ago, we would most likely be talking about another Marvell based appliance with substandard file performance, lacking a lot of features that we now take for granted with our NAS appliances. If we fast forward just one year, this NAS is now based on an Intel Atom processor and features like HD Station are now in the works. Now if we tap that fast forward button one more time to 2013, this NAS now has an Intel Celeron G550 dual-core processor with 2GB RAM and QTS 4.0.5 - oh, and did I mention SSD caching?
Reading that first paragraph, it quite easy to see how far the NAS market has traveled in just a few short years. The days when NAS appliances were deployed in small/medium business with slim penetration into the consumer market have passed with a high percentage of SOHO and SMB users now seeing the value and security in maintaining their own data.
The short story is rather simple, the next generation of network storage has arrived with the TS-470 Pro from QNAP.

Hardware Specifications and Pricing

Modern NAS servers have moved beyond data storage through a wire network. In order to get the most out of a NAS you need to look at the extra I/O hardware and the mountain of potential software features.
qnap_ts_470_4_bay_smb_nas_review
The TS-470 is a NAS appliance with its foundation lying in the Intel H61 chipset. SilverStone ST65SF-G 650-Watt 80 PLUS Gold Power Supply Review

Introduction

silverstone_st65sf_g_650_watt_80_plus_gold_power_supply_review
Not too long ago we reviewed the ST45SF-G from SilverStone. It is the smallest power supply we have ever looked at by dimensions and it proved to be quite a special piece of hardware considering its size. While that may have been the smallest power supply that SilverStone offers, it isn't the only lower wattage unit that they have.
Today we have the ST65F-G. This unit has a slightly larger footprint than the ST45F-G, but it is still one of the smallest ATX form factor power supplies on the market. It offers enough power and connectors to take care of a system with dual video cards and does so with 80 PLUS Gold efficiency.
Aside from the size, it shares the same features that we've come to love with the Strider Gold Evolution series of power supplies and as such, we expect this to be a great power supply.

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

silverstone_st65sf_g_650_watt_80_plus_gold_power_supply_review
SilverStone's ST65F-G features a single 12V rail rated for 54A or 648W of power. The 3.3V rail is rated for 22A, while the 5V rail is rated for 20A. The minor rails are rated for a maximum combined output of 150W. The 5VSB is rated for 2.5A or 12.5W. Maximum combined output for the ST65SF-G is 650W.
silverstone_st65sf_g_650_watt_80_plus_gold_power_supply_review
SilverStone has never been one to skimp on the features and the ST65SF-G is no exception. The ST65F-G features a full range of protections including SCP, OVP, OCP, OPP and OTP. The ST65F-G is rated for 80 PLUS Gold efficiency. The ST65F-G is a fully modular power supply and all cables for the unit are fully sleeved. Finally, the ST65F-G is not rated for 100% continuous output at 50C, but SilverStone rates it for 100% at 40C.
SilverStone lists the ST65S-G with an MSRP of $124.99. That does make it a little bit more on the expensive side, but you can save a few bucks if you look around. Newegg currently has the unit with a $10.00 mail-in rebate and $5.99 shipping, so you can save about five bucks. The SilverStone ST65F-G has a three year warranty, which we feel is a little short in this day and age.

Anker Astro2 9000mAh Portable USB External Battery Charger Review
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
When Anker contacted me in regards to their Astro range of mobile batteries, I was intrigued. I had never heard of their batteries before, and did a little research. They have a wide range of products ranging from external batteries to keyboards and mice, and all the way through to USB 3.0 hubs, and cases and screen protectors for smart devices.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
We have the Astro2 9000mAh Portable Double-USB Port External Battery Charger in the lab today, but first we'll take a look at what comes in the box.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
Opening the box, we have the biggest unique feature of the Astro2 - shake it to start charging your device.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
Inside the box, there is the Astro2 charger itself, a stylish pouch, an accessory bag and some booklets on the device itself.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
Now we have the Astro2 9000mAh charger, which looks incredibly sexy. It has a curved design and feels great to hold - not that you'd be holding it all that often. There are three ports on the rear of the device, one for input - which charges the device - and the other two are for plugging in your device to charge, or multiple devices. The "Smart" port can charge any USB-powered device, be it a smartphone or tablet, or another portable battery.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
The "Universal" port is for Android smartphones and more, but you can use both ports to power any device you want to charge. There is 4A of total output, which is quite impressive from such a small charger.
anker_astro2_9000mah_portable_usb_external_battery_charger_review
Anker has been kind enough to display a list of popular compatible models of devices that will work with its Astro2 charger. You can pick up the Anker Astro2 9000mAh portable power bank for $39.99 from Amazon, down from $99.99. At $100, I wouldn't recommend it over the Patriot FUEL+ line of chargers, but for $40? Yes ma'am.
Now, the best bit: actual testing. The Astro2 charger was impressive to use with its shake-to-activate charging, but I found this feature to not work at all times. Some of the time I'd really be shaking it, to the point where it would hurt my wrist, and nothing would happen. I found this quite poor, but other times I would gently shake it and it would turn on. Not that this is a showstopper, but it did have me scratching my head.
As for charges, I was able to charge my Nexus 4 smartphone - with a 2100mAh battery - over four times from 10% without an issue thanks to the 9000mAh inside of the Astro2 battery. This was great, as I used it over a weekend where I didn't need to use my normal charger when staying in a hotel.
I took it to Canada with me to the NVIDIA 2013 Editors Day, and had it charging my Nexus 4 on the way from Sydney to Vancouver on the Tuesday, and charging it every day between Tuesday and Friday without an issue. Being able to carry around 9000mAh of portable battery is just awesome. I could have my phone in my backpack, charging away, while I walked around or sat down at the hotel, or even in the plane.
The Astro2 feels great to hold, and it's quite stunning to the eyes. Not that the aesthetics of a portable battery really matter, but to some people, it does. I quite like the look of the Astro2.
Wrapping up, I hope that the shake-to-activate issues go away in the next revision, and that maybe there's an option to just turn it on. I'm afraid that if the shake-to-activate function of the Astro2 - for whatever reason - stopped working, would the Astro2 continue to charge? I'd guess not. Other than that, the Astro2 9000mAh mobile battery is an awesome device, with a very cool shake-to-activate feature.

CyberPower Zeus EVO Lightning 3000 SE AMD-powered Gaming PC Review

Introduction

cyberpower_zeus_evo_lightning_3000_se_gaming_pc_review
The day is here and if you didn't figure it out from the demo, Battlefield 4 is a beast of a game. Now that the retail release has dropped, you may have realized this version takes a bit more grunt in the video card department.
DICE recommends a Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 660, but that's what you need to make the game look decent at a playable frame rate. If you care about image quality and want the all of the digital bells and whistles, you need something more. That in the Battlefield series comes from the Ultra preset, a built-in setting that turns the GPU tech up and unleashes an amazing picture.
In Battlefield 4, you need a powerful GPU, but pushing all of those pixels also requires serious processing power. In this area DICE recommends an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T or Intel Core i7 930, again another recommendation just to make multiplayer playable with an average frame rate and average image quality.
Enter the new CyberPower Zeus EVO Lightning 3000 SE, a gaming PC with spectacular gaming performance, but at a very reasonable price point. CyberPower chose to go with all AMD components for this system; the best AMD has to offer.

System Specifications

cyberpower_zeus_evo_lightning_3000_se_gaming_pc_review
If you read tech sites then you've undoubtedly heard of AMD's fabled FX-9590 CPU, also known as AMD's $1000 5GHz processor. This processor is fairly rare, but the supply has increased and the retail price has decreased to a reasonable level. As you can imagine, running anything at 5GHz is extreme and doing it on 32nm technology is pushing the limits. The FX-9590 has a TDP of 220 watts to go along with its 8 cores and requires excellent cooling.
Speaking of heat, the AMD Radeon HD 7990 is still AMD's single fastest video card. If you're playing Battlefield 4, it's also the best single video card on the market for the game. In his review, Shawn Baker called the HD 7990, "the fastest single video card solution on the market." Pairing AMD's fastest CPU to date and the fastest video card was a simple choice for CyberPower, a pair that work well together.
The combination works well together, but requires clean power and high quality components that can perform under higher than normal temperatures. CyberPower put those components together and powered them with a Lepa G1000 1000w PSU, a product that received a TweakTown Best Performance Award.

Pricing and Warranty

cyberpower_zeus_evo_lightning_3000_se_gaming_pc_review
Prior to writing this review, we built the CyberPower Zeus EVO Lightning 3000 SE at CyberPower's website as tested. The price came to $1964 with free shipping. CyberPower covers its high performance gaming systems with a standard three year warranty and lifetime technical support.
The price is right for a pixel pushing gaming system, but now we need to see how many pixels this system can actually push. Before that, let's take a look at the system and see the build quality.

NVIDIA Dramatically Simplifies Parallel Programming With CUDA 6
NVIDIA today announced NVIDIA CUDA 6, the latest version of the world's most pervasive parallel computing platform and programming model.
nvidia_dramatically_simplifies_parallel_programming_with_cuda_6
The CUDA 6 platform makes parallel programming easier than ever, enabling software developers to dramatically decrease the time and effort required to accelerate their scientific, engineering, enterprise and other applications with GPUs.
It offers new performance enhancements that enable developers to instantly accelerate applications up to 8X by simply replacing existing CPU-based libraries. Key features of CUDA 6 include:
  • Unified Memory -- Simplifies programming by enabling applications to access CPU and GPU memory without the need to manually copy data from one to the other, and makes it easier to add support for GPU acceleration in a wide range of programming languages.
  • Drop-in Libraries -- Automatically accelerates applications' BLAS and FFTW calculations by up to 8X by simply replacing the existing CPU libraries with the GPU-accelerated equivalents.
  • Multi-GPU Scaling -- Re-designed BLAS and FFT GPU libraries automatically scale performance across up to eight GPUs in a single node, delivering over nine teraflops of double precision performance per node, and supporting larger workloads than ever before (up to 512 GB). Multi-GPU scaling can also be used with the new BLAS drop-in library.
"By automatically handling data management, Unified Memory enables us to quickly prototype kernels running on the GPU and reduces code complexity, cutting development time by up to 50 percent," said Rob Hoekstra, manager of Scalable Algorithms Department at Sandia National Laboratories. "Having this capability will be very useful as we determine future programming model choices and port more sophisticated, larger codes to GPUs."
"Our technologies have helped major studios, game developers and animators create visually stunning 3D animations and effects," said Paul Doyle, CEO at Fabric Engine, Inc. "They have been urging us to add support for acceleration on NVIDIA GPUs, but memory management proved too difficult a challenge when dealing with the complex use cases in production. With Unified Memory, this is handled automatically, allowing the Fabric compiler to target NVIDIA GPUs and enabling our customers to run their applications up to 10X faster."
In addition to the new features, the CUDA 6 platform offers a full suite of programming tools, GPU-accelerated math libraries, documentation and programming guides.
Version 6 of the CUDA Toolkit is expected to be available in early 2014. Members of the CUDA-GPU Computing Registered Developer Program will be notified when it is available for download. To join the program, register here.
For more information about the CUDA 6 platform, visit NVIDIA booth 613 at SC13, Nov. 18-21 in Denver, and the NVIDIA CUDA website.
