Here's why the CrossFire Eyefinity/4K story matters
Earlier this week, we posted a news item about an article written by Ryan Shrout over at PC Perspective. In the article, Ryan revealed some problems with using a Radeon CrossFire multi-GPU setups and multiple displays.
Those problems look superficially similar to the ones we explored in our Radeon HD 7990 review . They were partially resolved—for single displays with resolutions of 2560x1600 and below, and for DirectX 10/11 games—by ...

Back in jail with iOS 7
Unless you're one of these people, you're probably aware that the entire Internet slowed to 300 baud modem speeds Wednesday as millions of First Worlders (We're number one, hey!) hammered Apple's cold fusion-powered data centers in hopes of being one of the lucky five to download iOS 7 or, as a consolation prize, a personalized scowl from Jony Ive. I was not one of the five.
Which was ...

Phablets could be the future for Windows RT
Some might argue that Windows RT has been an unmitigated disaster. At the very least, it's been a flop. Microsoft still thinks the ARM-based OS has a future, though. At a financial analyst meeting yesterday, the company hinted that Windows RT's future could involve convergence with Windows Phone. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley has posted the related snippet, which unfortunately stops short of revealing any specific plans. In response to a question about the future of Windows RT, Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft's OS division, said "Windows RT was our first ARM tablet. And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future."
I believe the word Myerson was looking for is phablet. But that only became a word in August , ...

New GeForce WHQL drivers add Batman: Arkham Origins support
I guess today is driver update day. On the heels of AMD's Catalyst 13.9 WHQL release, Nvidia has cranked out an updated of GeForce drivers—and it, too, is certified by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs.
Nvidia bills the new GeForce 327.32 drivers as an "essential update for all GeForce GTX users." This release "ensures maximum system stability and gets you ready for ...

Catalyst 13.9 drivers add WHQL certification, drop frame pacing
AMD graphics drivers seem to come out every few weeks, but they're usually beta releases that lack Microsoft's official endorsement. The latest Catalyst 13.9 drivers bear Redmond's WHQL seal of approval, though. They're also certified for Windows 8.1, which is only a month away from its formal debut.
Surprisingly, the release notes don't include a long list of game-specific performance improvements. The drivers presumably include some of the optimizations ...

Cyanogen Inc. formed to accelerate alternative Android OS development
CyanogenMod has gone corporate. The alternative Android variant was backed by funding from Benchmark Captial and Redpoint Ventures in April, and 17 employees have been devoted to the project ever since. The transition, along with the project's history, is described in this blog post by CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik. The post lauds the contributions made by the CyanogenMod community but notes that barriers prevented the OS from really scaling up. Having a full-time staff split between offices in Seattle and Palo Alto should allow Cyanogen Inc. to evolve the OS more quickly.
As Kondik says, "it's ...
