Friday night topic: hair reconfigurations
I've never been a beard guy. Had the clean look nearly all of my adult life, with a brief exception of a goatee experiment that didn't work out. I can't grow a good beard quickly, if at all.
However, long ago I promised myself to make a change whenever my hairline's backward march went too far. I would at least attempt to shift my hair's center ...

Nvidia is still hopeful about Surface RT, Windows RT
It's been a rough week for Windows RT. Microsoft slashed the Surface RT's price and wrote off $900 million because of "inventory adjustments" related to the device. Lenovo, meanwhile, stopped selling its WinRT-powered Yoga 11 convertible online. Both systems are powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 system-on-a-chip, so what does Nvidia think of all this?
The company hasn't lost hope, judging by what Rene Haas, Nvidia's VP of Computing Products, told ComputerWorld in a ...

Report: Upcoming Dell Precision laptop has 3200x1800 screen
The Retina display on Apple's top-of-the-line MacBook Pro is a sight to behold, with 2880x1800 pixels crammed into a 15.4" panel. Dell may have something even more impressive up its sleeve, though. According to Dutch site Tweakers.net, a 15.4" Dell Precision mobile workstation due late this year will have an eye-popping 3200x1800 display resolution.
Dubbed the Precision M3800, the system will reportedly have "matte black surfaces and aluminum edge[s]." Under those will lurk a quad-core Haswell processor (the Core i7-4702MQ), Nvidia Quadro graphics, up to 16 gigs of RAM, and a ...

Are you deftly navigating the Steam Summer Sale?
I've been watching the Steam Summer Sale pretty closely, checking in at least a couple of times each day. My experience of the sale isn't quite as hysterically amazing as it used to be, simply because I usually have most of the games, either as press copies or because I bought them when they came out. Still, I friggin' love these sales, even if I'm buying games I may not try for six months. (Heh, with 150 games on my Steam list, six months may be optimisic.)
So far this year, I've grabbed Mark of the Ninja , which Geoff enjoyed, and Gunpoint . I also picked up a Steam key for Sacred 2 Gold ...

Clever caching fuels Samsung 840 EVO SSD
Samsung just announced its 840 EVO solid-state drive. The initial press release covered the basics, but it was a little short on the nerdy details we tend to obsess over here at TR. We've since learned much more about the drive, and we'll have a full review soon. In the meantime, we can share a few interesting tidbits about the EVO and its unique approach to caching.
Improved write performance is one of the EVO's defining characteristics. The boost in write speeds is made possible by a feature called TurboWrite technology, which is essentially a high-speed write cache built into the NAND. Most of the EVO's flash memory is ...
