Microsoft to begin retiring Messenger on April 8 I don't know many people who still use Microsoft's Messenger service. Starting April 8, though, that number is going to shrink rapidly to zero. Microsoft announced earlier today that the "upgrade from Messenger to Skype on Windows desktop" will begin on that date. The transition will "take a few weeks to complete," with English-language users to be the first ones shepherded away from the deprecated Messenger service. Users in other countries will follow over the next few weeks, with ... Read more... Read More ...
Fate of AMD's Sea Islands obscured in the fog Reports surfaced last weekend that AMD's graphics roadmap for 2013 would keep the Radeon HD 7000 series "stable" throughout the year. The news came out in an unusual way, via an interview with a Japanese website and then several tweets from AMD employees and the official Radeon Twitter feed. Naturally, we had questions about the state of things, so AMD held a conference call for the press today, in an attempt to clarify matters. Prior to last weekend, we expected AMD to be introducing a new generation of graphics cards within the next few months. That expectation was informed by the ... Read more... Read More ...

The chip is fabbed using Micron's 20-nm process, and it's based on triple-level-cell (TLC) flash technology. According to Micron, the ... Read more... Read More ...

Rumor: HP cooking up a Tegra 4-powered tablet You know the saying: if at first you don't succeed... euthanize all your webOS devices, waffle on the software's fate for a few months, spin it into an open-source project with little chance of success, and then switch to Android. Okay, maybe that one's not in the idiom dictionary—but HP might still abide by it. ReadWrite reports that the PC maker will use Android to power a "series of upcoming mobile devices," ... Layoffs reportedly underway at Valve It's apparently been a rough week for a few unlucky folks in Bellevue, Washington. Rumors are swirling about a round of layoffs undertaken by Steam purveyor and Half-Life 2: Episode Three procrastinator Valve Software. GamaSutra has a good collection of details, including a list of staffers who've disappeared from Valve's staff page. Among those seemingly laid off: Valve's Director of Business Development, a couple of former Weta animators (including one who also worked at Industrial Light and Magic), a game test lead, and an AI programmer who ...
