Networking equipment vendor Cisco Systems released multiple security updates on Wednesday to address vulnerabilities in its AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances, Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series ASA Services Module and Cisco Application Control Engine (ACE) software. The newly released versions of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client -- Cisco's VPN and remote access product for businesses -- address four vulnerabilities located in the software's Web-based downloader components.

Red Hat's RHEL 6.3 aims at large-scale cloud deployments
With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.3, Red Hat has tweaked the enterprise grade Linux distribution to add new capabilities in storage, virtualization, security, scalability, and performance. "This is one of largest update release to date," said Tim Burke, Red Hat vice president of Linux engineering development. Hackers exploit Windows XML Core Services flaw
An unpatched Windows vulnerability considered a critical threat by security experts is being exploited by cyber criminals. Microsoft disclosed the flaw in XML Core Services (MSXML) 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 June 12 during its monthly release of patches. The security advisory, which was separate from the patch release, offered a workaround for vulnerability CVE-2012-1889, but no fix. The vulnerability is easily exploited through Internet Explorer.

Update: Face.com iOS flaw could have allowed Facebook, Twitter account hijacking
Facial recognition startup Face.com patched a vulnerability in its Klik iOS app that could have allowed attackers to hijack the Facebook and Twitter accounts of its users, according to Ashkan Soltani, the independent security researcher who claims to have found the flaw. Klik is a camera app designed to allow users to easily tag friends in new photos by scanning their Facebook photo albums. It uses facial recognition technology developed by Face.com.

RIM reduces headcount in $1 billion cost-cutting effort
Research In Motion has started cutting jobs as it tries to achieve its stated goal of slashing $1 billion in costs by the end of fiscal 2013, the company said on Wednesday. The company did not specify the number of jobs cut or where headcount was reduced. The job cuts were in line with a May 29 announcement, when the company said that it would look to reduce headcount and spending, said a RIM spokesman in email.

HP unveils Windows-powered NAS box for small businesses
Hewlett-Packard Wednesday unveiled a lightweight version of its Windows-based NAS (network-attached storage) array that's aimed at small and medium businesses. Based on the same architecture as the HP X5000-series NAS box, the new X5000 devices for small businesses use 2.5-inch drives and can scale to 32.4TB. The older X-5000 devices use 3.5-inch hard drives and now scales to 48TB in a single unit.

Gartner downgrades enterprise application revenue forecast
Analyst firm Gartner on Wednesday said it has lowered its 2012 growth estimate for the global enterprise applications market to $120.4 billion, citing "limited signs" of economic improvement in the short term. Global spending on business applications will rise 4.5 percent from last year's $115.2 billion total, Gartner said. The firm had previously predicted a 5 percent uptick this year.
