Google updates Google Play to give developers the ability to reply to comments
Now when viewing apps in the Google Play Store, users will be able to see developers' responses to user comments and reviews. It's something that should have been instituted from the very beginning and it's surprising that it took them this long to add it. It's a feature that can be seen in action on Newegg's review system and, quite frankly, it works great.

User reviews on Google Play are great for helping people discover quality apps and give feedback to developers and other potential app users. But what about when developers want to give feedback to their users? Sometimes a user just needs a helping hand, or perhaps a new feature has been added and the developer wants to share the good news. The feature won't be available to every developer quite yet. Only developers who have a "Top Developer" badge will be given access to the feature for right now and they will be able to test it out. When a developer responds, an e-mail is sent to the user who placed the comment or review to alert them of the response.
That's why we're adding the ability for Google Play developers to respond to reviews from the Google Play Android Developer Console. Developers can gather additional information, provide guidance, and - perhaps most importantly - let users know when their feature requests have been implemented.
This will aid in providing support as well as the fact it will yield better apps. The quote "Conversations are meant to be two-sided, and facilitating discussion between developers and users will ultimately yield better apps, to the benefit of everyone" really sums up nicely the reason behind this update.
Apple better take notice of this new feature or they could be left behind. Social equals engagement and allowing developers to connect with the users on a platform they both spend a lot of time using could really improve the quality of the apps created. How often do users remove an app because of a simple user mistake or an easy to fix error? More often than you would think.

BitFenix reaffirms SuperCharge technology, charges mobile devices from PC
BitFenix has reaffirmed their commitment to SuperCharge technology which allows mobile devices to charge from a PC. But why is this any different from a regular USB port to charge with? Well, for starters, it has a microchip designed to monitor the voltage required for rapid charging and will provide that voltage so that the device is not damaged.

"BitFenix is known for innovation, and the appearance of similar solutions on the market is a signal that we're on the right track," said David Jarlestedt, BitFenix Product Manager. "However, we hope that products inspired by BitFenix innovations will bring a net positive result to the community, rather than causing inconvenience or even danger to users at home. We're thrilled with the feedback we've received for BitFenix SuperCharge, and caution against the use of charging devices that are not compliant with Battery Charging Specification 1.2. From SofTouch and FyberFlex, to NanoChrome and SuperCharge, BitFenix will continue to bring forth new innovations along with the input of the hardware community."

Sharkoon releases the Skiller gaming keyboard
Sharkoon has released a new gaming keyboard at CeBIT at an affordable price. I'm always amazed at the prices charged by some companies for gaming keyboards as I figure there is no way it can be that much better. This new gaming keyboard, the Skiller, features 18-key rollover, interchangeable WASD and cursor keys, and software for creating up to ten keyboard profiles.

The company explains the features and how it is customizable: "With its programmable keys and profile memory, the Skiller is an extremely versatile companion that quickly adjusts to all changing areas of operation: Through the enclosed software all standard keys can be assigned frequently used individual functions or macros. The configuration supports the creation of up to ten profiles, each with three sub-levels. This allows an optimal keyboard layout for a variety of different applications and gaming environments to be created with only a little bit of effort."

Gamers who want to highlight and haptic their WASD and Cursor keys will find enclosed eight interchangeable rubber keys all in blue. In addition to the 107 standard keys, the Sharkoon Skiller has 20 multimedia keys for Internet and Media applications.
The Skiller is fluid in its operation: Thanks to its 18-key rollover, players will not be at a disadvantage during action-packed gaming situations which require simultaneous quick and accurate key commands.

Google launches Endangered Languages to save 3,000 at-risk languages
Google has announced a new project to save endangered languages in order to prevent them from becoming extinct. The idea is to make sure that there is a record to keep languages able to be spoken so that they can be taught to future generations. Languages have many aspects which result from the culture they are spoken in, so this is important for people who study these cultures.
Google has an endearing story about one such language thought to be extinct, but revived through historical manuscripts:
The Miami-Illinois language was considered by some to be extinct. Once spoken by Native American communities throughout what's now the American Midwest, its last fluent speakers died in the 1960s. Decades later, Daryl Baldwin, a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, began teaching himself the language from historical manuscripts and now works with the Miami University in Ohio to continue the work of revitalizing the language, publishing stories, audio files and other educational materials. Miami children are once again learning the language and-even more inspiring-teaching it to each other. The new project by Google gives people working on learning and teaching these languages a place to collaborate research and share advice. This could include uploading audio files of spoken words so people can hear how they are pronounced, to other information about the language such as knowledge-sharing articles.
Google has taken point so far on this project, but the true goal is to have the experts in the languages take over. Because of this goal, Google will hand over the reins in a few months to First Peoples' Cultural Council (FPCC) and The Institute for Language Information and Technology (The LINGUIST List) at Eastern Michigan University.

NZXT Aperture M USB 3.0 Multi-Media Hub Review

To increase the odds of you purchasing more USB 3.0 devices motherboard manufactures have started to include USB 3.0 headers on the boards, but are still keeping a limited number on the back of the board. Most would prefer their USB 3.0 ports on the front of their case anyhow, so this is a good thing. The eco system is hardly ever balanced though because in order to use those front USB 3.0 ports you need a new case... or do you?
NZXT, a case manufacture themselves have devised a way to increase your USB 3.0 count without the expense of purchasing a new computer case. The NZXT Aperture M uses a single USB 3.0 motherboard header to put two USB 3.0 ports right on the front of your computer. At the same time, the Aperture M also provides several flash card slots, so you can read and write to the most popular flash cards on the market today.

The NZXT Aperture M has an attractive faceplate that matches several computer cases on the market today including several sold by NZXT. The perforated front panel will also allow some cool air to enter your system.

Still, the Realtek bridge inside the Aperture M does get you right up to the limits of USB 2.0, but a dual 3.0 design would of really set this product off into the stratosphere.

At the time of writing the NZXT Aperture M was not list on Newegg, Tiger Direct or any other trusted site. We couldn't find a price through Google Product Search either, but they are coming.
We only hope that NZXT doesn't charge too much for the Aperture M because it's a very useful tool even if you already have USB 3.0 ports built into your case. The card reader is a very nice add-on for any computer users and especially anyone who takes digital pictures as often as I do.

X-IO Wins Two Best of TechEd 2012 Awards
Storage industry innovator X-IO today announced that its advanced Intelligent Storage Element Hyper ISE was awarded two Best of TechEd Awards at the close of last week's Microsoft TechEd North America 2012 conference. The high-performance storage system, which fuses traditional hard disks and SSDs into a single pool of capacity, was named "Best Hardware and Storage Product" by the judging panel and -- for the second year in a row -- voted "Attendees' Pick" by conference attendees.

The Best of TechEd Awards, produced by Windows IT Pro, SQL Server Pro, SharePoint Pro and Dev Pro, recognize the innovative products and services showcased at the annual Microsoft TechEd event. To determine this year's winners, the five-member judging panel narrowed a field of 260 submissions down to 46 finalists in 15 categories, then interviewed the finalists and evaluated each product on the criteria of strategic importance, competitive advantage and value to customers. The prestigious "Attendees' Pick" award, on the other hand, was determined by the votes of show attendees.
X-IO attracted considerable attention on the show floor with its booth demo, which showcased unprecedented price/performance involving Microsoft's new Windows Server 2012 RC. Running a single equipment rack of 10 ISE-2 Intelligent Storage with HP servers, Infiniband adapters and hardware from QLogic, the company attained a sustainable rate of over 15 gigabytes per second of throughput, achieving up to 100,000+ IOPS with high performance storage capacities exceeding 100 terabytes. The demonstration used only off-the-shelf commodity equipment, highlighting not only the speed of X-IO's Intelligent Storage Elements, but their real world usability and affordability in the data center.
X-IO designed its Intelligent Storage Elements and architecture from the ground up to accelerate enterprise applications and drive unmatched storage price/performance, even for big data needs. Each X-IO ISE unit is a completely self-contained storage building block. The Hyper ISE version features clustered on-board controllers that manage a performance pool comprised of both HDDs and SSDs. Exceptionally high throughput performance is achieved by X-IO's Continuous Adaptive Data Placement (CADP) software, which monitors I/Os in real-time, ensuring that high demand data hotspots reside on the faster SSD. ISE is uniquely designed to scale so that no matter how many ISE units are added to increase capacity, full storage performance is maintained. ISE units from X-IO are major environmental upgrades to a data center due to their low energy consumption and low HVAC loads.
