Sandy Bridge chipset flaw fingered
Intel announced yesterday that it was having to redesign the Cougar Point chipset that goes with the Sandy Bridge platform. The chipsets are being redesigned and affected units that were already sold will be recalled and repaired. There are a lot of companies that will be having to get machines from customers to get the issue fixed.

Sandy Bridge chipset flaw fingered

The culprit for the degrading IO performance over time has been singled out. Engadget reports that the issue with the chipset comes down to a single transistor on the board that has a higher current leakage than the chipset can tolerate. The issue can apparently also make the SATA port fail completely.
Originally, we had understood that the issue would only degrade performance. It's worth noting that if you are on a board that is affected by this issue that has SATA ports that are controlled by a third party controller, they are not affected.

AMD C-50 Fusion APU inside Toshiba NB550D gets benchmarked
We talked a bit about the Toshiba NB550D netbook with the AMD Fusion APU yesterday when it got unboxed. The gang over at Netbooknews also posted up some benchmarks for the new Fusion processor inside the machine to give us an idea how well the netbook performs. The machine has the C-50 APU running at 1GHz and a HD 6250 GPU that supports DirectX 11.

AMD C-50 Fusion APU inside Toshiba NB550D gets benchmarked

The geeks playing with the system ran 3DMark06 on it and the total score was 1889 3Dmarks. They point out that the score is 120 points higher than the preproduction version of the same notebook they had benchmark before. They upgraded the RAM to 4GB and the score stayed the same. The 3DMark06 score puts the machine ahead of some netbooks, put well behind the score the Atom D525 packing rigs like the Revio 3700 from Acer that put down 2898.
The machine was also ran through 3DMark03 and scored 4854 3DMarks. That is quite a bit better than the Aspire One 532G at 3029 according to Netbooknews. Rounding out the benchmarks is CrystalMark with the score of 37,648. The geeks also used the netbook for some gaming at 1024 x 600 on Crysis and others and the games played without issues.

Intel Sandy Bridge SATA issue and the Aussie Flood Dream System
Last night you probably heard all the news about Intel only just discovering an issue with the Sandy Bridge chipset. We are using the GA-P67A-UD7 motherboard in the Aussie Flood Appeal Dream System and that is one of the many affected products on the market.

Intel Sandy Bridge SATA issue and the Aussie Flood Dream System

The issue of degrading performance and possibly even data corruption over time is seen when using the SATA II ports on motherboards that are powered by the Intel P67 chipset. The Intel SATA III ports are not affected, nor are the SATA ports powered by the two Marvell 88SE9128 chips that are featured on the GA-P67A-UD7.
The Dream System comes with a total of five drives: two Corsair Force F120 120GB SSDs and three Western Digital Black 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s HDDs. Our solution to dodge the problem altogether is running both Corsair SSDs on the SATA III ports (still in RAID 0) and two out of the three Western Digital hard drives on the Marvell controlled SATA ports. As for the third drive from WD, Thermaltake has stepped up to the plate once again and is throwing in one of their Max 5G USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosures. We did intend on adding in a high-end PCI-E RAID controller to take care of this issue, but all of the PCI Express x16 slots are accounted for by use of the three SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6970 2GB video cards in lovely Crossfire.
As of now, that brings the total value of the Dream System up to $4930.80 USD and the winner will not need to fear any potential storage issues later down the track. It is unknown at this stage if GIGABYTE will provide the winner of the Dream System with a refreshed and error-free GA-P67A-UD7 once they received new revision P67 Sandy Bridge chipsets from Intel, but we will keep you posted.

Adult Movie Industry CTRL-C, CTRL-V's the RIAA's methods of revenue
The RIAA has been sniffing up the arse of a tonne of people who download illegal content over the past few years, with 100, 000 copyright infringement lawsuits in the USA in the past 12 months alone.

Adult Movie Industry CTRL-C, CTRL-V's the RIAA's methods of revenue

But now, the pornography industry are following in their footsteps by suing everybody in sight in order to scare people into no longer downloading their content. The Hurt Locker was last year's Oscar winning film about the Iraq war. The producers behind it complained that nearly nobody had seen the movie and that the result of this were illegal downloaders.
Yes, that's the reason.
Now the adult movie industry is wanting some quick revenue, why not sue people? Especially now that two of the biggest Adult BitTorrent sites were recently shut down, these lawsuits are just beginning. Most of them are within the $1000 range, with the RIAA using this method. Pay $X amount today or we'll own your ass faster than you'd blink.
They have lawyers in their pockets, most 'normal' citizens don't.

Apple MacBook Air suspended in the air... by a balloon
Is Apple good at marketing? I wouldn't say so, but if I said that, I'd be lying. Check out the below video of the new MacBook Air in an Apple Store, suspended in the air by nothing but a balloon.

Yes, how amazing is that. For someone walking in and asking "just how light is the MacBook Air" and being the Sales Person being able to say "look behind you" and seeing it just hovering there like magic... I'm 99% sure Apple would sell a MacBook Air right there and then.

GPU shipments down in the last quarter
Jon Peddie Research's graphics shipment estimates for the past quarter have arrived, with numbers being "below expectations". According to JPR the growth from the fourth quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2010 was only 4.3%, JPR are suggesting that tablets and iPad growth might to be blame.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX590 arrives within a month, brings dual-GPU action in the color green
NVIDIA is planning a launch of the upcoming dual-GPU video card in the next month. The GeForce GTX590 should launch to duke it out against AMD's upcoming Antilles, otherwise known as the Radeon HD6990.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX590 arrives within a month, brings dual-GPU action in the color green

The GTX590 will feature two GF110 cores with a total of 1024 CUDA cores, 3027MB of GDDR5 memory, dual 384-bit memory buses, 128 texture units and 96 ROPs. Based on features alone, this effectively doubles the specifications of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX580.
NVIDIA is said to have included all of the CUDA cores but will reduce the stock clock frequencies and voltages to give it improved power consumption numbers. The TDP has not been announced for the GTX590 yet, but be sure it will be a beast, the GTX580 is rated at 244W just to give you an idea... for those who live on the bleeding edge, they won't care. The thing could use 500W and it will still be the talk of the web.

Sandy Bridge "Cougar Point" chipset has design flaw, recalls imminent
D'oh. It appears that the new Intel Sandy Bridge chipset has a flaw that can't be fixed with firmware or software. The issue has required a silicon redesign to fix and some systems shipped before the issue was discovered meaning that there are some Sandy Bridge machines in the wild already that will suffer from the issue.

Sandy Bridge

As far as silicon issues go, it could be worse. The affected machines will continue to work, the issue is with the SATA controller and performance will degrade over time. That means that while your rig might be fast right now, a year or so down the road things could be totally different with IO performance.
Intel is seeing some significant recalls in its future. The chipmaker has reduced expected revenue by $300 million to fix the issue and make the new version of the chipset design. The issue is specifically with the Intel 6 Series chipset known as Cougar Point. The total cost to repair and replace materials and systems on the market already is expected to hit $700 million. Intel doesn't expect the chipset issue to significantly impact its full year revenue. Intel expects to resume P67 chipset shipments in late February and meet full demand by March or April.

Toshiba NB550D netbook gets unboxed on video
We like a good unboxing video of a new gadget or computer around these parts. The latest notebook to get the unboxing treatment comes our way via NetbookNews and is the Toshiba NB550D. The notebook gets power from an AMD C-50 CPU running at 1GHz. It has a 10.1-inch screen like most netbooks do.

Toshiba NB550D netbook gets unboxed on video

Graphics for the little machine are via Radeon HD 6250 and the APU used inside the rig promises to perform better than the Atom-based netbooks we generally see. The NB550D is a nice looking little machine with hints of green and a rubberized finish that keeps fingerprints away.
The notebook has a pair of Harmon Kardon speakers built-in, which is nice considering how anemic most netbook sound systems are. The machine has HDMI out and a lot more features as well. The worst thing about this notebook is that it will only be in Europe and won't head to the US. It will sell for about $450 in the EU. Check out the video below.

Sony pumps out 3.56 Firmware, says "take that" hackers
Nothing is going to stop these hackers, but Sony doesn't care. They are pumping out firmware like it's nothing and are now up to 3.56. This "security patch" is an attempt to keep hackers from executing unsigned code that allows homebrew programs to run, as well as pirated games and online games to be backed.

Sony pumps out 3.56 Firmware, says

But, the new firmware was unpacked within hours but may be a little while away before the firmware is completely cracked. Those who are running hacked firmware are obviously being told not to update. Sony are continuing to keep people out of their system but the hackers are persistant. No one really wins from this and console sales from hacked systems can show that companies can still make money.

Galaxy GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB GC Video Card Overclocked
Introduction

Galaxy GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB GC Video Card Overclocked

Another day rolls in and another GTX 560 Ti arrives. With a pretty mean looking cooler on this one and a few lower clocked models already looked at, it's time to check out how overclocking goes on the new model.
The exact card we're looking at today is the Galaxy GTX 560 Ti 1GB GC Version. This isn't the first time we've seen the GC version and the chances are it won't be the last.
As we just mentioned, since we've already looked at a couple of GTX 560 Ti cards we thought it was time to overclock one and see what we could get out of the card. Since out of the box the Galaxy one we're looking at today didn't have the largest OC'd clock speeds, we thought it was a good chance for us to take it upon ourselves to see what the model was capable of.
Before we get into that and the overclock we received, we'll check out the package that Galaxy has got going on before taking a closer look at the card itself. Once that's done we'll look at the default specifications, what we overclocked it to and then of course we'll get into the good stuff; the performance of the card.

On the front of the box you can see that this is the GC version and the main feature of it is the Twin Blade cooler. Inside the package we've got the normal array of paperwork along with the typical driver CD. In the cable department we've got two Dual-Molex to 6-Pin PCI-E power connectors, a single DVI to VGA connector and a mini HDMI to HDMI cable.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Gaming Performance Analysis
Introduction

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Gaming Performance Analysis

So you're a Windows 7 user and you thank Microsoft every day for creating something that has gotten you off Windows Vista. Almost 18 months on and loads of little updates later, we finally find ourselves greeted with the first Service Pack for the operating system.
So it's got a list of fixes etc. - But we only really care about one thing when it comes to the new service pack. Is our gaming experience going to be any better? - It's not uncommon for a major release like this to offer us some free performance, and that's exactly what we intend to find out today; if we're able to get some.
We'll be using my new favorite test bed in the P67 today with what continues to be the fastest single GPU video card on the market; the MSI GTX 580 1536MB. The focus is of course gaming performance, so we'll be looking at the whole line-up of games today that we normally use in our video card benchmarks, and by the end of it we should be able to get a good idea on whether or not the new service pack is a worthy install for the gamer.
Since there's nothing to really look at today in terms of hardware, we'll just get stuck straight in to the testbed we've got up and running and then into the fun stuff - the benchmarks!

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

It's a little ironic that one of the highest anticipated games for PC, Crysis, finds the second iteration getting a console exclusive multiplayer demo. One side of me doesn't care, while the other side of me does.
The only reason I don't care is for the simple reason that I own an Xbox 360, as I do a PlayStation 3 and high end PC. The reason I care, though, is that no matter how much I stir my favourite news monkey Anthony up about consoles being superior, they're really not in any way, shape or form when it comes to First Person Shooters or FPS. It doesn't matter how well you can wield that controller around, I can wield my keyboard and mouse around better. Hell, my mum could probably wield a keyboard and mouse better.
However, we're not here to get into a conversation on the merit of consoles and companies' decisions to release content exclusively to them. Instead we're here to offer you a preview of the Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo and give you our thoughts. Over the holidays, though, I've been testing the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle, a little device that gives us the ability to record our gaming footage in HD and has given us the ability to implement our own in-game footage and screenshots. Again, not something we'll get into today, but keep an eye out for a standalone review in the coming weeks!

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Anyway, with all that business out the way, let's cover the Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo. We've got two game modes and one map. We've got your typical "team deathmatch" style which is called "Team Instant Action", and we've got another mode called "Crash Site" which is a more capture and defend kind of mode. The latter isn't unlocked 'till you're rank 6 and most of the time I found myself having problems finding people playing this mode or just getting drop outs at the load screen.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Getting into Team Instant Action, you find yourself on one of two teams; C.E.L.L. or Marines. You've got yourself that sexy suit and in the demo we've got three abilities. The first gives us the ability to run faster and jump higher (Power), the second makes us invisible (Stealth), while the third increases our armour strength (Armour).
All three are linked up to energy which you'll see in the HUB when looking at our own footage. They're all really self-explanatory, but it has to be said the invisible offering is really good in the sense that you become quite invisible. Of course, you can still be seen, but combined with a fast run (which sees your energy dwindle fast), it's easy to give people the slip.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Out of the five classes; Assault, Scout, Sniper, Gunner and Custom, I found when I had unlocked Scout and gained the Shotgun, I used the Armour mode a lot as it gave me the ability to get in on the action and really just pound my enemy with shotgun shells. Really, it wasn't until the Scout class that I found myself having the most fun, as the ability to aim, shoot and kill with the shotgun is easier than that of the assault rifles and it seems that a large portion of people feel similar with it being one of the most popular classes.
With "Skyline" being the only map, it doesn't take long to figure your way around.
Camping on the map in the sense of sitting still is extremely limited, as due to the high jump ability there's multiple entrances to most spots.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Without utilizing the "Power" aspect of your suit, the game isn't all that fast paced from your point of view, but when you start seeing people zipping around the game it becomes quite manic. To be honest, the whole experience feels a little Call of Duty Multiplayer on steroids with the high jumps, fast run and futuristic weapons.
It's not really a bad thing, but it's indeed different and you could understand that the manic nature will turn some people off, especially those who aren't as confortable with FPS games on a console.
There seems to be a total of six game types coming, though, and you may find one of the other models a little less crazy. The other four that are mentioned in your "Service Record" include Assault, Capture the Relay, Extraction and Instant Action. It will be interesting to see which ones gain the most momentum, but if Call of Duty is anything to go by, it'll be the Team Instant Action option.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

While the weapon choice is a little limited in the demo, it's not a half bad range at the same time. The ones that demand less accuracy are the easiest to use, while the ones that require more precision will indeed test your patience more when combining the controller and lag.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

On the topic of some of the more typical areas we would cover in a game review, the audio side is strong. The music between menus gets you ready and in game the guns sound great. Graphically the game feels like a little bit of a mixed bag; the effects of running through water that is falling over you looks great, but overall the graphics seem very crowded and again manic due to the amount of stuff going on. Considering we're now only just over a month away from seeing the full game, it's fairly safe to assume that not a lot will change in that department.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

Some areas, particularly inside ones look great such as the treadmills in the Gym, while a lot of the outside areas, although not as impressive, have huge amounts of foliage. However, my feeling it that this could very much just be this map used for the demo and there will be more of a balance in detail across the board with the final maps used in the full game. What will be interesting, though, is how it looks on PC, and if it will push systems like the original did.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Xbox 360 Preview

It's fairly safe to say that come towards the end of March this is going to be a game worth picking up. The online is fun and more game modes should add even more to the mix. The single player story will be interesting and of course that's something we'll cover more when the full game comes out. With the demo coming to a close on February 4th, if you haven't grabbed the demo it's a little late now and you'll just have to wait 'till the full release. For now it's back to some Madden 11 to get my NFL fix as the season winds up.

Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution
Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution
Updates Outlook to Incorporate Effects of Error, Infineon Acquisition and Expected McAfee Acquisition

Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution

• Chipset circuit design issue identified, fix implemented, customers being notified
• Infineon Technologies AG Wireless Solutions business (WLS) acquisition closed Jan. 31
• McAfee, Inc. (MFE) acquisition expected to close by the end of the first quarter
• Fourth-quarter, first-quarter and full-year outlook revised to reflect impact of chipset issue, WLS closure, expected MFE closure by the end of the first quarter
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2011 - As part of ongoing quality assurance, Intel Corporation has discovered a design issue in a recently released support chip, the Intel® 6 Series, code-named Cougar Point, and has implemented a silicon fix. In some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives. The chipset is utilized in PCs with Intel's latest Second Generation Intel Core processors, code-named Sandy Bridge. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories. Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue. The Sandy Bridge microprocessor is unaffected and no other products are affected by this issue.
The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality. For computer makers and other Intel customers that have bought potentially affected chipsets or systems, Intel will work with its OEM partners to accept the return of the affected chipsets, and plans to support modifications or replacements needed on motherboards or systems. The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th and the company believes that relatively few consumers are impacted by this issue. The only systems sold to an end customer potentially impacted are Second Generation Core i5 and Core i7 quad core based systems. Intel believes that consumers can continue to use their systems with confidence, while working with their computer manufacturer for a permanent solution. For further information consumers should contact Intel at www.intel.com on the support page or contact their OEM manufacturer.
For the first quarter of 2011, Intel expects this issue to reduce revenue by approximately $300 million as the company discontinues production of the current version of the chipset and begins manufacturing the new version. Full-year revenue is not expected to be materially affected by the issue. Total cost to repair and replace affected materials and systems in the market is estimated to be $700 million. Since this issue affected some of the chipset units shipped and produced in the fourth quarter of 2010, the company will take a charge against cost of goods sold, which is expected to reduce the fourth quarter gross margin percentage by approximately 4 percentage points from the previously reported 67.5 percent. The company will also take a charge in the first quarter of 2011which will lower the previously communicated gross margin percentage by 2 percentage points and the full-year gross margin percentage by one percentage point.
Updated 2011 First Quarter and Full Year Outlook
Separately, Intel recently announced that it had completed the acquisition of the Infineon Technologies AG Wireless Solutions business, which will now operate as the Intel Mobile Communications group. The company also expects to complete the acquisition of McAfee by the end of the first quarter.
The effects of the chipset issue and these transactions are incorporated into the company's revised outlook. The company now expects first-quarter revenue to be $11.7 billion, plus or minus $400 million, compared to the previous expectation of $11.5 billion, plus or minus $400 million. Gross margin percentage is now expected to be 61 percent, plus or minus a couple percentage points, compared to the previous expectation of 64 percent, plus or minus a couple percentage points. Spending (R&D plus MG&A) is now expected to be approximately $3.6 billion, compared to the previous expectation of approximately $3.4 billion.
The full-year revenue growth percentage is now expected to be in the mid-to high teens, compared to the company's prior expectation of approximately 10 percent. Full-year gross margin is now expected to be 63 percent, plus or minus a few percentage points, compared to the previous expectation of 65 percent, plus or minus a few percentage points. Spending (R&D plus MG&A) is now expected to be $15.7 billion, plus or minus $200 million, compared to the company's previous expectation of $13.9 billion, plus or minus $200 million. Research and development (R&D) spending is now expected to be approximately $8.2 billion, compared to the previous forecast of $7.3 billion.
All other expectations for the first-quarter and full-year remain unchanged. With the exception of McAfee, the outlook for the first quarter and full year do not include the effect of any acquisitions, divestitures or similar transactions that may be completed after Jan. 31. The acquisition of McAfee is subject to customary closing conditions.

Status of Business Outlook
During the quarter, Intel's corporate representatives may reiterate the Business Outlook during private meetings with investors, investment analysts, the media and others. From the close of business on March 4 until publication of the company's first-quarter earnings release, Intel will observe a "Quiet Period" during which the Business Outlook disclosed in the company's news releases and filings with the SEC should be considered as historical, speaking as of prior to the Quiet Period only and not subject to an update by the company.
Risk Factors
The above statements and any others in this document that refer to plans and expectations for the first quarter, the year and the future are forward-looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Many factors could affect Intel's actual results, and variances from Intel's current expectations regarding such factors could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed in these forward-looking statements. Words such as "anticipates," "expects," "intends," "plans," "believes," "seeks," "estimates," "may," "will," "should," and their variations identify forward-looking statements. Statements that refer to or are based on projections, uncertain events or assumptions also identify forward-looking statements. Intel presently considers the following to be the important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from the company's expectations.
• This release contains forward-looking statements and projections based upon estimates of the impact of the chipset degradation issue on Intel's future financial and operating results, including on revenue, gross margin, and inventory valuation, based on preliminary analysis and information which is subject to change. Among the factors relating to the chipset degradation issue that could cause actual results to differ are the number of units that may be affected, the impact on systems in the market, the costs we may incur in repairing or replacing impacted components the extent to which customers purchase parts from Intel's competitors as a result of Intel parts shortages or otherwise, and the extent to which Intel is able to increase production of substitute or redesigned parts for customers.
• Among the risks related to the McAfee and Infineon AG Wireless Solutions business (Infineon WLS) transactions that could cause actual results to differ are that the closing of the McAfee acquisition may be delayed or may not occur, and that Intel may not realize the anticipated benefits of the transactions if the products, markets and business prospects of Infineon WLS and/or McAfee are not as presently anticipated by Intel. In addition, other risks associated with the acquisitions include whether Intel will retain the customer relationships and key employees of Infineon WLS and McAfee and will successfully integrate the acquired technologies or operations. Each acquisition will also involve the potential for unexpected liabilities that could become the obligations of Intel following the closing(s) of the acquisition(s).
• The updated Business Outlook for Q1 2011 and full-year 2011 includes assumptions and projections related to the revenue, gross margin, spending and other financial results of Infineon WLS and McAfee. These assumption and projections are based upon financial information obtained and estimated by Intel prior to closings of the transactions and prior to the integration of those businesses with the other business operations of Intel. Future business, integration, roadmap and other operations, and financial estimates, involving Infineon WLS and McAfee and the remainder of Intel are subject to change as post-closing integration and direct ownership of Infineon WLS and McAfee proceeds. In addition, the gross margin forecast reflects preliminary valuations of assets acquired or to be acquired in the Infineon WLS and McAfee acquisitions; however the allocation of the purchase price is not yet finalized and may be adjusted as Intel completes the valuation analyses.
• Demand could be different from Intel's expectations due to factors including changes in business and economic conditions; customer acceptance of Intel's and competitors' products; changes in customer order patterns including order cancellations; and changes in the level of inventory at customers.
• Intel operates in intensely competitive industries that are characterized by a high percentage of costs that are fixed or difficult to reduce in the short term and product demand that is highly variable and difficult to forecast. Revenue and the gross margin percentage are affected by the timing of Intel product introductions and the demand for and market acceptance of Intel's products; actions taken by Intel's competitors, including product offerings and introductions, marketing programs and pricing pressures and Intel's response to such actions; and Intel's ability to respond quickly to technological developments and to incorporate new features into its products.
• The gross margin percentage could vary significantly from expectations based on defects or disruptions in the supply of materials or resources; product manufacturing quality/yields; capacity utilization; variations in inventory valuation, including variations related to the timing of qualifying products for sale; changes in revenue levels; product mix and pricing; the timing and execution of the manufacturing ramp and associated costs; start-up costs; excess or obsolete inventory; changes in unit costs; and impairments of long-lived assets, including manufacturing, assembly/test and intangible assets.
• Expenses, particularly certain marketing and compensation expenses, as well as restructuring and asset impairment charges, vary depending on the level of demand for Intel's products and the level of revenue and profits.
• The tax rate expectation is based on current tax law and current expected income. The tax rate may be affected by the jurisdictions in which profits are determined to be earned and taxed; changes in the estimates of credits, benefits and deductions; the resolution of issues arising from tax audits with various tax authorities, including payment of interest and penalties; and the ability to realize deferred tax assets.
• Intel's financial results could be affected by gains or losses from equity securities and interest and other that could vary depending on gains or losses on the sale, exchange, change in the fair value or impairments of debt and equity investments; interest rates; cash balances; and changes in fair value of derivative instruments.
• The majority of Intel's non-marketable equity investment portfolio balance is concentrated in companies in the flash memory market segment, and declines in this market segment or changes in management's plans with respect to Intel's investments in this market segment could result in significant impairment charges, impacting restructuring charges as well as gains/losses on equity investments and interest and other.
• Intel's results could be impacted by adverse economic, social, political and physical/infrastructure conditions in countries where Intel, its customers or its suppliers operate, including military conflict and other security risks, natural disasters, infrastructure disruptions, health concerns and fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
• Intel's results could be affected by the timing of closing of acquisitions and divestitures.
• Intel's results could be affected by adverse effects associated with product defects and errata (deviations from published specifications), and by litigation or regulatory matters involving intellectual property, stockholder, consumer, antitrust and other issues, such as the litigation and regulatory matters described in Intel's SEC reports. An unfavorable ruling could include monetary damages or an injunction prohibiting us from manufacturing or selling one or more products, precluding particular business practices, impacting Intel's ability to design its products, or requiring other remedies such as compulsory licensing of intellectual property.
A detailed discussion of these and other factors that could affect Intel's results is included in Intel's SEC filings, including the report on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 25, 2010.
Intel plans to report its earnings for the first quarter of 2011 on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Immediately following the earnings report, the company plans to publish a commentary by Stacy J. Smith, vice president and chief financial officer at www.intc.com/results.cfm. A public webcast of Intel's earnings conference call will follow at 2:30 p.m. PST at www.intc.com.
