Nvidia 3DTV Play pairs up GeForce rigs with 3D-capable HDTVs
Almost negating the need for its 3D Vision package, Nvidia has developed 3DTV Play, a software package that will enables people to link a GeForce-equipped system (desktop or notebook) to a 3D HDTV in order to enjoy 3D gaming on a large screen. In addition to 3D games (over 400 are supported), Nvidia's solution ensures smooth playback of Blu-ray 3D movies, and the viewing of digital 3D photographs, on your future (or current if you're an early adopter) 3D HDTV.

3DTV Play is able to run off a DVI or HDMI-boasting PC, it supports the HDMI 1.4 standard and the 1080p24, 720p60, and 720p50 3D formats, and it works with 3D TVs featuring active-shutter glasses or passive polarized glasses.

The Nvidia 3DTV Play software is going to become available later this spring priced at $40 and will be offered for free to those who bought the 3D Vision package.

To promote 3DTV Play Nvidia is joining Panasonic (who sells 3D HDTVs) on its 2010 "Panasonic Touch the Future Tour" which starts today and will show off the new VIERA 50-inch 3D FullHD TVs to people in 15 cities across the US.

PC market to post double-digit growth through 2014, says IDC
You can't keep a good PC down apparently as not even the global financial crisis could stop the PC market from growing by 2.9% in 2009. Since the worst is supposedly behind us, IDC is predicting some very good times for the PC market which should grow by over 10% from 2010 through to 2014 (and possibly beyond but that's as far as the research firm's crystal ball will go).

IDC estimates that this year some 333.3 million PCs will be sold worldwide which translates into a 12.6% increase over 2009. This trend would continue with a 13.9% jump in 2011 and pass through 2014 with a 11.3% increase.

Despite both desktops and portable PCs being expected to grow in the coming years, the former category will only deliver a small plus topping 1.6% in 2011. Portable PCs including laptops, netbooks and tablets will truly drive the market up, this year alone their shipment growth being estimated at 21.4%.

Revenue wise, the PC market is expected to go up 5% this year but will only reach the record revenues of 2008 in 2012. Overall, it certainly seems like good times are making a comeback. For PCs, not humans.

Dell sues Toshiba, Sharp, others for LCD price fixing
Similar to AT&T, Dell has decided to take several Asian firms to court for their alleged participation in a carter that dictated higher LCD prices. Dell filed a complaint with a US District Court in San Francisco against Toshiba, Sharp, Hitachi, HannStar and Seiko Epson, and is asking for damages (amount still undetermined) for the period in which it paid too much for the LCD panels bought.

In October 2009, AT&T sued Samsung Electronics, LG Display, AU Optronics, HannStar Display and other LCD panel manufacturers on similar charges, following an investigation by the US Justice Department which resulted in LG Display, Sharp and Chunghwa Picture Tubes pleading guilty to price fixing accusations and paying hundreds of millions of dollars in fines. And now Dell wants a piece of the cartel too.

MSI wants to ship 1 million All-in-One PCs this year
Well-known Taiwanese company MSI is hoping for a solid growth of its business this year, one of the catalysts for it expected to be All-in-One desktops PCs. MSI sold some 300,000 AiO's in 2009, but with a more aggressive push and the economic recovery, it plans to deliver about 1 million units in 2010.

Reaching the 1 million mark would help MSI become the fifth largest All-in-One vendor after Apple, HP, Sony and NEC, and ahead of arch-rival Acer's who currently holds the #5 medal.

The All-in-One market is expected to record a boom this year and reach 15 million shipped units, up from 6 million in 2009.

Nvidia fights Intel's power with 'Case For Innovation' sub-site
Since making jokes about Intel's legal problems can only do so much, Nvidia has last week launched a new section of its website named 'Case For Innovation' to inform people about the anti-trust cases against the number one chip manufacturer.

According to Ned Finkle, VP Strategic Marketing at Nvidia, the new Nvidia.com section is a "one-stop resource for those looking to get up to speed on actions being brought against Intel for impeding competition, stifling innovation and for not living up to its agreements which were filed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the New York Attorney General, as well as Nvidia itself. The site also provides background about cases brought by the European Commission, Japan and Korea."

Case for Innovation currently features four main pages that explain the technologies involved in the fight with Intel, the legal arguments, the evidence presented thus far and the media reaction/coverage. With the new sub-site Nvidia is trying to get more people 'on its side' contesting Intel, the final goal obviously being a ruling that would favor the green team. Nvidia and Intel have last year sued each other over their license agreement and have been at it ever since.

First day iPad order estimates looking good
Apple's iPad became available for pre-order in the US this past Friday, March 12, and already there are reports about the interest shown by customers towards the shiny tablet. One estimate comes from Investor Village and it claims that almost 120,000 iPads were ordered on the very first day.

Most people (69% or buyers) went for the WiFi-only versions of the iPad (shipping April 3rd) while the rest ordered the WiFi+3G models which are set to ship at the end of April. Capacity wise there's a pretty equal divide, with the 16GB and 64GB iPads having just over 33% share each, while the 32GB tablets were ordered by 32% of the early adopters.

"Apple has been able to generate over $75 million in revenue in one day on a product that 99.9% of purchasers haven't touched or for that matter, even seen in person," said Victor Castroll, an analyst with Valcent Financial Group. "And, we're still three weeks away. That is amazing." Amazing indeed but that's you have with such a loyal following. Overall though, it's still just business.
