
Plextor starts shipping its first solid state drives
Plextor has proudly announced that its first two solid state drives, the 64GB PX-64M1S and 128GB PX-128M1S have begun shipping and should already be hitting stores. These two new 2.5-inch SSDs feature a Marvell controller, MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips, 64MB of cache, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, a MTBF of 1.5 million hours and read/write speeds of up to 130/70 MB/s (110/65MB of the 64GB model).

"We're excited to leverage Plextor's expertise in optical storage and enter the SSDmarket as it continues to grow," said Esteban Kim, Director of New Business Development at PLDS. "PCMark, SYSmark and HD Benchmark industry utility tests scored Plextor SSDs high and we're proud to have the new lineup available to our customers."
Plextor's PX-64M1S and PX-128M1S SSDs are bundled with Acronis True Image software and have recommended price tags of $225 and $400, respectively.

MSI's 890FX-GD70 motheboard spotted at CeBIT
First seen back in December, the 890FX-GD70 motherboard from MSI is present in Hannover for CeBIT to show off its updated look. The upcoming AMD 890FX board has a black PCB and a black/blue color theme, it supports AM3 processors, packs Hi-c CAPs but also solid caps, features APS (Active Phase Switching), DrMOS, and the OC Genie overclocking technology.
The 890FX-GD70 includes four DDR3 memory slots, five PCIe slots for CrossFireX setups, seven SATA ports (six of which are definitely 6.0 Gbps), dual Gigabit Ethernet and 7.1 channel audio.
The AMD 890X chipset is reported to be launched on April 26, together with the Thuban 6-core CPUs so expect MSI's motherboard to debut around that date.

Western Digital intros new My Passport Studio portable HDD
Western Digital, the world's second-largest hard drive manufacturer, has now released an updated My Passport Studio line of portable HDDs. Going from 320GB, through 500GB, to 640GB in terms of capacity, the new Mac-oriented drives measure 83 (W) x 124 (L) x 18.5 (H) mm and weight 180 grams, are compatible with Apple's Time Machine backup solution, have FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectivity, plus 256-bit hardware-based encryption
WD's HDDs also feature an e-label on the front which shows how much free space is available and can be customized using the provided SmartWare software.
"Many of our customers store their content on multiple external drives, making it difficult to know what content is on each drive," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing of WD's Branded Products group. "The e-label smart display is an elegant and practical solution for organizing and keeping track of one's digital life and work. WD SmartWare software makes it easy for users to protect their valuable content with automatic and continuous backup and encryption."
The 2010 My Passport Studio hard drives are backed by a three-year warranty and are priced from $149.99 to $199.99, depending on capacity.

Walton Chaintech builds compact USB 3.0 flash drive
Walton Chaintech got with the USB 3.0 flow today by unveiling the Astro Drive A101, its first USB 3.0-supporting storage solution. Seen below, the new flash drive, which is claimed to be the smallest USB 3.0 product yet, comes in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, has a red and silver color scheme, and has been seen, during tests, reaching read and white speeds of up to 186 MB/s and 130 MB/s, respectively.
Walton Chaintech has yet to reveal the Astro Drive A101's pricing plan or retail release date(s).

Thecus starts shipping the N4200 NAS
Announced at CES in January, the N4200 NAS server from Thecus has begun to hit stores just before CeBIT, providing a new solution aimed towards users craving a central storage hub for their home. The N4200 supports four 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD, features a 1.66 GHz Atom D510 dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, an LCD for viewing critical system information, plus a 2.8-inch OLED which helps with modifying a number of settings like WAN, LAN, Link Aggregation and languages.
Thecus' 4-bay NAS includes dual Gigabit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 ports and two eSATA ports, a lithium-ion battery pack to ensure no data is lost in the case of a power outage, and a PCIe x1 expansion slot.
Currently, the N4200 can be found without a HDD for 519 Euro or with 2TB to 8TB of storage space for prices going from 699 Euro to 1,089 Euro.

AOpen releasing the Nagas G3, G5 and G6 gaming cases
AOpen has recently introduced the Nagas family of gaming PC cases which, for starters, includes three members, the compact G3 chassis, and the ATX-supporting G5 and G6. The top dogg of the new line is the G6, a mid-tower case featuring a metal mesh front panel, a dark coating inside and out, nine 5.25-inch bays, side hooks for hanging mice and headsets, and a top-mounted I/O panel with audio, USB and eSATA ports.
The G6 also boasts a side window, a removable 3.5-inch drive rack with a 120mm front fan, a rear 120mm spinner and two more 120mm fans on top, and pre-drilled holes for the tubing of liquid cooling systems.
The G5 chassis also has a mesh front panel and drilled LC holes, it supports up to four 120mm fans, includes a front I/O bay with USB, audio and eSATA ports, and just three exposed 5.25-inch bays.
Last but not least, the G3 can only house micro ATX motherboards and boasts a see-through mesh side cover, eSATA, USB and audio connectors in front, one 5.25-inch and three 3.5-inch bays, plus built-in HDD vibration dampers. This one supports up to two 80mm fans, and graphics cards that are 10.5 inches long.
Now if you can't find them, maybe you can 'hire' them for your gaming rig. We'll have two G3s please.

Chip sales reached $22.5 billion in January
The semiconductor market kicked off 2010 with a reasonably-sized bang as chip revenue in January was of $22.5 billion, up 0.3% sequentially and up 47.2% compared to the same month in 2009.
"Worldwide semiconductor sales in January increased significantly compared to one year ago, reflecting today's improving business environment for the industry," said SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association) President George Scalise. "We are currently seeing strength across a range of demand drivers for semiconductors, including personal computers, cell phones, automobiles, and industrial applications."
The 0.3% increase in January can be attributed to the Asia Pacific region which grew by 2% over December, the other major markets - the Americas, Europe and Japan, all posting a loss.

HP readies the EliteBook 2540p notebook and 2740p convertible tablet
More portable PC fun is prepared by HP who's cooking up a couple of fresh EliteBook series machines, the EliteBook 2540p rugged notebook and the EliteBook 2740p convertible tablet. Set to start off at $1,099, the 3.3-pound 2540p features a 12.1-inch LED-backlit display, an Intel Core i5/i7 processor, up to two hard drives (or one HDD and one optical drive), a 2 megapixel webcam with business card reader software, Gobi-powered mobile broadband, and a 3-, 6- or 9-cell battery, the for up to 4, 8 or 10.5 hours of operation respectively.
The EliteBook 2740p starts a 3.8 pounds and $1,599, has a 12.1-inch screen that can be equipped with multi-touch, has specs similar to the 2540p, and has a 6-cell battery for up to 5 hours of uptime. Those who want more will be able to get the HP 2700 Ultra-Slim Battery and use the laptop for up to 11 hours on one charge.
The EliteBook 2740p and 2540p meet the MIL-STD 810G military-standard tests for vibration, dust, humidity, altitude, and high and low temperatures. Both models are expected to start shipping in the US next month.

Team Group's Xtreem-S1 SSD has SandForce power
Like rivals OCZ and A-Data, Team Group is also adopting SandForce's solid state drive controllers, and its first SandForce-based product is going to be on display at CeBIT in Hannover. Known as the Xtreem-G1, Team Group's 2.5-inch SSD comes in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities and features MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, TRIM support, and a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 1 million hours.
The upcoming drives are said to deliver read and write speeds of up to 270 MB/s and 260 MB/s, respectively and will be offered with a two-year warranty. No word on prices yet.

HP reveals four new ProBook business laptops
HP has today announced the expansion of its ProBook s-series family of small business-oriented laptops with four new models - the 13.3-inch ProBook 4320s, 14-inch 4420s, 15.6-inch 4520s and 17.3-inch 4720s.
As you'd expect the laptops make use of Intel's new Core i3, i5 and i7 mobile processors, pack Intel integrated graphics or an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4350 discrete solution, up to 4GB of RAM, a 250, 320 or 500GB hard drive, a DVD writer, optional 2 megapixel webcam, an Express Card/34 slot and a multi-card reader.
The new ProBooks come with a brushed-aluminum metal case with a matte surface in caviar or bordeaux, and can be pre-loaded with Windows XP (downgrade), Windows 7, or SUSE Linux Enterprise 11.
The ProBook 4320s, 4420s, 4520s and 4720s can be found here with starting prices of $949, $869, $799 and $1,059, respectively.
