SanDisk shipping its 2.5-inch G3 Series SSDs
Announced last month, SanDisk's 2.5-inch G3 solid state drives have begun being delivered to retailers in North America and Europe, a good few months before initially planned. The C25-G3 SSDs come in 60GB and 120GB capacities, feature MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 2 million hours, Windows 7 TRIM support, they deliver maximum read and write speeds of 220 MB/s and 120 MB/s, respectively, and make use of the ExtremeFFS flash management system which can improve random write performance.

"Our rugged drive enables a superior customer experience by delivering extended endurance and fast performance in a resilient SSD design," said Eric Bone, vice president, retail product marketing, SanDisk. "SanDisk believes in an uncompromising development approach which insists that an SSD's long term reliability and durability are just as important as its overall speed. Acer in no hurry to enter the e-reader market
PC heavyweight Acer is quite set on expanding its product offer beyond what it offers today but this won't see to any head-first action. According to Acer chairman Wang Jeng-Tang, his company already has ebook reader prototypes ready and could go into production but this won't happen yet, for several reasons.

One thing holding back Acer's e-readers is the size of market size for such devices, which is apparently not big enough yet, while another is the need for a successful business model that will ensure a quick enough rise among the top reader manufacturers.

Despite the set-backs, Acer is still interested in selling ebook readers so it's only a matter of time before we see such a product. Previous info pointed out for a June debut of an Acer 6-inch e-reader but it looks like we'll have to wait some more.

Kanguru Defender Elite flash drives get BitDefender protection
Security freak Kanguru Solution has teamed up with virus-buster BitDefender in order to add antivirus protection to its Kanguru Defender Elite flash drives. In order to keep the data stored on them safe, Kanguru's drives feature 256-bit AES hardware encryption as well as a tamper resistant shell, but to keep malware from 'getting in' they will utilize a BitDefender software solution providing real-time virus scanning.

"Our partnership with Kanguru and their use of BitDefender's technology will further expand and increase the level of protection provided by Kanguruأ¢آ€آ™s flash drives to knock-out more threats before they have a chance to reach the user's computer."

The Kanguru Defender Elite flash drives come in 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128GB capacities and can be found here at prices going from $50 to $600.

LG Display 13-inch in-cell multi-touch LCD panel gets Win7 certification
Samsung rival LG Display has proudly announced that its 13.3-inch capacitive in-cell multi-touch LCD panel has received the 'Windows 7 Touch Logo' certification from Microsoft. The MS logo validates the quality of multi-touch digitizers for use with Windows 7 and a panel's compatibility so LG can feel pretty good about its achievement, especially since this is the first in-cell touch panel to pass Microsoft's program.

"LG Display has successfully applied the Capacitive In-Cell Multi-Touch technology to large sized LCDs for notebook PCs," said Dr. In-Jae Chung, LG Display CTO and executive vice president. "Until now, the technology had limited use in smaller devices like mobile phones. We believe Microsoft certification is a testament to the product's excellence. We will continue to apply superior touch functions to larger IT products like notebooks and monitors to lead consumer and market trends."

LG's 13.3-inch in-cell panel features built-in touch sensors enabling the simultaneous recognition of two touch points, and is aimed towards notebook use. Don't expect to see the panel too soon though as mass production is scheduled for the second half of the year.

ABI predicts smartbook shipments of 163 million units in 2015
Still rather elusive in terms of availability, smartbooks are expected to enjoy an interest and sales boom in the next few years, according to ABI Research. Smartbooks, which are defined by ABI as low-power devices running a mobile operating system, have only really begun to sell in 2008 but should gain a lot of ground really fast and reach shipments of up to 163 million units in 2015.

Smartbooks are powered by ARM-based chips and are promoted as always-connected devices that will enable a better browsing experience than the one offered by smartphones. Models sold or announced have screens going from 7 to 10 inches so, at first glance, they can resemble netbooks.

Big PC market players like HP and Lenovo have already jumped aboard the smartbook train and more companies are expected to do the same this year so let's join them for the ride. No purchase is necessary.
