UK girl's iPod Touch explodes
Apple wanted to silence a British iPod touch owner whose device exploded. Ken Stanborough from Liverpool, dropped his daughterأ¢آ€آ™s iPod last month and it immediately "made a hissing noise" and claimed that that he "could feel it getting hotter in my hand, and I thought I could see vapour". Within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air".

Mr Stanborough made his complains to Argos and Apple, and he received a letter from Apple requesting that the whole matter remains confidential. In the opposite case it "may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties".

Mr Stanborough was unhappy with the 'settlement' from Apple UK, and refused to sign the agreement. Apple and Argos are not commenting on the matter, at the moment. This is the second time an iPod Touch explodes this year. Back in March, the mother of a boy from Kentucky filed a lawsuit against Apple for burns allegedly caused by an iPod Touch.

Khronos Group delivers OpenGL 3.2
The Khronos Group has started off the week with quite a bang by announcing a new update for its OpenGL 2D and 3D graphics API. OpenGL 3.2 comes with improvements and features that deliver enhanced performance, increased visual quality, accelerated geometry processing and easier portability of Direct3D applications.

To get into the details of the updated API, OpenGL 3.2, which already has a growing install base of over 150 million compatible GPUs, delivers increased performance for vertex arrays and fence sync objects, improved pipeline programmability, including geometry shaders in the OpenGL core, and boosted cube map visual quality and multisampling rendering flexibility.

"The strategy behind OpenGL 3 is to bring revolutionary changes to OpenGL through a rapid sequence of evolutionary updates, and the ARB continues to effectively execute to that plan," said Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group and vice president at Nvidia. "OpenGL 3.0 set the stage with new mechanisms to enable OpenGL to respond to diverse market needs, OpenGL 3.1 used those mechanisms to streamline the API while adding new functionality. Now we have OpenGL 3.2 that fully exposes state-of-the-art GPU capabilities in a form that meets the needs of both new and experienced OpenGL developers."

Those interested in learning more about OpenGL 3.2 can check out the OpenGL Registry.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt leaves Apple board
Shiny tech thingie designer Apple has announced that Dr. Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, has decided to resign from the Apple Board of Directors.

"Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple's core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric's effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple's Board."

Schmidt, who's been on Apple's board since 2006, is the reason for an investigation started by the Federal Trade Commission in May in regards to the ties between Google and Apple. The FTC will likely close this 'case' following today's announcement.

Intel to keep supplying netbooks makers with Atom Z CPUs
Kicking off the week with a smash, Intel has denied a recent rumor that claimed it would stop shipping Atom Z series processors to netbooks makers at the end of this year.

Calling the rumor "100% inaccurate," Intel reiterated that it will continue to provide customers like Asus, MSI and Acer with Atom Z models, and that it will not stop making these parts this year. Intel is currently hard at work at the Pine Trail platform for MIDs and netbooks which it plans to launch in Q4 but until it ramps up production on the dual-chip solution, both the current Atom Z and N series CPUs are pretty much safe.

Bing continues to gain US search market share, says StatCounter
After a quick stats-crunching session, web analytics firm StatCounter has concluded that Microsoft's Bing search (or decision) engine, has increase its share in the US search market in July. According to StatCounter, which collected date from over three million websites, Bing has ended July with a share of 9.41%, up just over 1% compared to the June-recorded 8.23%.

While Bing made gains, Google and Yahoo both slipped last month, the former from 78.48% (in June) to 77.54%, and te latter from 11.04% to 10.95%.

"Bing continues to make slow but steady progress but the combined Yahoo! figures suggests that the deal announced last week will have to demonstrate major future synergies if it is to make any dent in Google's dominance," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO and founder, StatCounter.

While in the US they had a 20.36% share in July, on a global scale Bing and Yahoo only have a 8.77% piece, while Google dominated with 89.23%, so it's pretty safe to say the partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo won't be challenging the king of search too soon.
