Report: As Microsoft CEO, Elop could kill Bing, sell Xbox business
The search for a new Microsoft CEO is still underway. According to Reuters, the top five candidates include current Ford CEO Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. Bloomberg also believes Elop is a contender—and the news agency has learned some juicy details about what Microsoft might look like under his leadership.
Before joining Nokia in 2010, Elop headed Microsoft's Business Division, where he reportedly "pushed the company to enhance and find new ways to sell [Office] software." Bloomberg says Elop would pursue that same strategy if named CEO. Quoting ...

Gigabyte amps up audio for G1.Sniper Z87 motherboard
We've long been critical of integrated motherboard audio, which typically doesn't measure up to the quality of even budget sound cards (at least when using halfway decent analog headphones and speakers). Onboard solutions continue to improve, though, and high-end boards are taking integrated audio to new heights. Gigabyte's G1.Sniper Z87 is the latest example. It debuts at Blizzcon today, and it's loaded with more audio goodness than we've ever seen on a motherboard.

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 780 Ti graphics card reviewed
Boy, this is entertaining. AMD uncorks the Radeon R9 290X and captures the GPU performance crown. Nvidia counters by announcing price cuts and promising to introduce a mysterious new GPU, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Along the way, we've seen a host of new features and buzzwords injected into the high-end graphics space as part of the conversation: AMD's Mantle low-level graphics API, Nvidia's creamy smooth G-Sync display tech, and the TrueAudio DSP block built into the new Radeons. Prices have dropped pretty dramatically in the past month, too.
For a dying market, high-end PC graphics sure has a lotta vitality. Makes ...

Samsung Spinpoint M9T is world's thinnest 2TB notebook drive
Seagate took over Samsung's hard drive business a couple of years ago, and it continues to crank out mechanical drives under the Samsung name. The latest one is the 2.5" Spinpoint M9T, which crams an impressive 2TB of storage into a case just 9.5 mm thick. The Spinpoint isn't skinny enough to match 5- and 7-mm notebook drives, but it's a fair bit thinner than competing 2TB offerings, which are 15 mm thick.

World of Mass Development has confirmed that crowd-funded racing sim Project CARS will be released for Valve's Linux-based living room OS. OCZ's Vector 150 solid-state drive reviewed
The playbook for SSDs is pretty well established. Controller updates are few and far between, so new drives typically combine existing technology with flash fabbed on a finer manufacturing process. That's not the most exciting recipe, but it makes sense. These days, most folks want SSDs to be cheaper rather than faster. Transitioning to finer lithography is the best way to lower the all-important cost per gigabyte.
OCZ followed that formula when it released the Vertex 450 earlier this year. That drive paired the Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller from OCZ's ...

Intel forms new business unit to tackle the Internet of things
At IDF in September, Intel surprised us with Quark, a tiny SoC that's one fifth the size of a Atom chip. The chip has already gone on to spawn an Arduino-compatible development board, and it's destined to power devices in the "Internet of things" everyone keeps talking about.
Now, Intel has made the small SoC an even bigger deal by forming a new business unit dedicated to connected devices. According to Reuters, the Internet of Things Solutions Group will report ...
