Harsh Punishments Needed to Deter File-Sharers While we certainly do not endorse illegal file sharing or copyright infringement, we don't think suing women, children, college students and dead people for $10k per song is the answer either. The Unites States Government has submitted a brief to the Supreme Court asking it to uphold the $220,000 verdict in the RIAA vs. Thomas file-sharing case. According to the Obama administration damages of $9,250 per song is not an unconstitutional amount and is in fact needed to deter others from engaging on online piracy. Comments Read More ...
Intel Confirms TV Plans Intel has finally confirmed its long rumored plans for streaming TV over the internet. Instead, Intel wants to offer "curated" bundles of TV channels, said Erik Huggers, General Manager of Intel Media, at this week's Dive Into Media conference. These bundles would be smaller than the packages that cable and satellite providers offer, and would allow for more customization, according to Reuters, but they won't necessarily be cheaper. Video Game Violence Research Uses Hot Sauce How do I know if violent video games turn kids into killers? It depends on how much hot sauce he puts on the other kid's food. Wait. What?!?!?! It also tested whether the students would behave more aggressively, by having them dole out hot sauce to a fellow student who, they were told, did not like spicy food but had to swallow the sauce. Sure enough, compared with a group who had played a nonviolent video game, those who had been engaged in "Mortal Kombat" were more aggressive across the board. They gave their fellow students significantly bigger portions of the hot sauce. Comments Read More ...

President To Issue Order On Cyber Attack Defense? According to "sources familiar with the matter" the President may issue an executive order aimed at improving the nation's defenses against cyber attacks as soon as tomorrow. The order, drawn up after Congress failed to pass cyber defense legislation last year, is meant to improve the protection of critical industries and infrastructure from cyber intrusions. Concerns about cyber attacks, which have hit a succession of major U.S. companies and government agencies in recent months, also could be raised by Obama in his annual State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday evening. Microsoft Fixes Critical Flaws It is Patch Tuesday once again. This round of updates fixes 57 known security vulnerabilities in Windows, Office and IE. So, if you are running a Windows box, today is definitely the day to get your patch on. This security update resolves thirteen privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. Comments Read More ...
Tim Cook Says Apple Has No Limits You should never write headlines like this when you are talking about Apple because jerks like me will spend half the day turning it into a punch line. Apple has no limits...to how low it will go. Apple has no limits...on how much it will charge. Apple has no limits...on how many people it will sue. I'd better stop now or we'll be here all day. "It's because of that that Apple's been able to do so many things for so many years, and do things that people didn't know they wanted and now can't live without," Cook said. "We don't think of the world with limits." Comments Read More ...

Tesla Model S: The World's Most Expensive Beta Test As expensive as these cars are, you'd at least think the company would have hammered out most of these issues by now. As Model S owners cope with these problems, as well as the firmware updates issued to fix them, they have become more than just drivers — they are testers taking part in the world's first public beta on four wheels.
