Apple has released a massive security update for Mac OS X along with a new version of its OS, however, according to several reports, installing the patches could render computers unbootable. Citrix acquires ShareFile for cloud-based file management
Citrix Systems has acquired ShareFile for an undisclosed sum, in an effort to break into the cloud-based data sharing market, the company said on Thursday. The fact that many users now have a multitude of different devices puts new demands on how data is stored and shared, giving rise to the personal cloud, according to Citrix. It has acquired ShareFile because it has high hopes for this burgeoning sector, which Citrix expects will be "a multi-billion dollar opportunity by 2015."

Thailand floods may affect global electronics production
Severe floods in Thailand have disrupted production of electronics including hard disk drives and semiconductors, with a number of factories suspending operations. Hard disk drive maker Seagate Technology has warned that a disruption in its supply chain could affect production, although its factories in Thailand are still in operation. "As a result of the disruption caused by the floods, Seagate anticipates hard drive supply will be constrained throughout the current quarter," the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Lenovo surpassed Dell to become the world's second largest PC vendor at the end of the third quarter, according to research firms IDC and Gartner. Top PC vendor Hewlett-Packard also saw its worldwide PC shipments grow by 5.3 percent in the quarter, despite reports that the company may spin off its PC business.

EBay unveils integrated app dev platform
EBay has launched an application development platform called X.commerce that pulls in tools and functionality from a variety of its sites and products, including the eBay marketplace and PayPal, as well as from partners. With X.commerce, eBay intends to give merchants and application developers access to a complete stack of e-commerce technologies, including shopping carts, payment services, and inventory management, the company said Wednesday.

Red Bend working on mobile virtualization
Red Bend, which makes products for delivering over-the-air software updates, will soon offer a virtualization technology for Android devices that allows a user to have both a personal profile and a business profile on the same device. Red Bend isn't saying yet who it is working with to deliver the offering. Because its product is a type 1 hypervisor, it needs to convince chip makers to include the software in their chipsets.
