Intel Scores Home Run with 10 Petaflop "Stampede" Supercomputer
Today the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), together with The University of Texas at Austin, announced that they will deploy a 10 Petaflop HPC Linux cluster called "Stampede." When it is operational at the beginning of 2013, "Stampede" is expected to be among the most powerful computers in the world. Normally, we'd celebrate this important design, but for all of the Intel employees working on Intel® MIC Architecture for the past several years, this announcement has a very special meaning.
For Intel this is an exceptional announcement as those 10 Petaflops will be delivered entirely by Intel technology. "Stampede" will be based on future 8-core Intel® Xeon® processors E5 family (formerly known as Sandy Bridge-EP) that will deliver 2 petaflops of performance. But this is also the first announcement of a system that will include thousands of Intel® Many Integrated Core (Intel® MIC) architecture co-processors codenamed "Knights Corner.", which will provide additional 8 Petaflops. In all, "Stampede's" 10 petaflops performance will be achieved thanks to hundreds of thousands of Intel Xeon and Intel MIC cores – all based on Intel architecture.

Getting Cable Requires Four Visits and the Police
Need a cable modem installed quickly? If this guy's story is any indication of how Time Warner does things, you might want to go with another provider.
At this point, we just wanted him to leave without installing the Internet. He refused to do either. We eventually had to call the police to get this gentleman to leave us alone. I had expected the installer to leave when we called the police. However, he actually stuck around and kept on arguing until the cops came, which I couldn't believe.

MSI Z68A-GD65 G3 LGA 1155 Motherboard Review
In the motherboard business, it's about differentiating the product. Once in awhile a motherboard manufacturer like MSI does just that before "the other guy." And that's where the Z68A-GD65-G3 comes in bringing PCI-Express Generation 3 support and a new UEFI interface to the table.

New Law Bans Warrantless Cell Phone Searches
A new law in California has banned warrantless cell phone searches (again). Thanks to TheWeazmeister for the link.
If you get arrested in California for any reason, the photos, e-mails and other personal data on your cell phone are now a bit safer from prying police eyes. A new law now requires law-enforcement officers in that state to obtain a warrant before searching the cell phone of a person placed under arrest.

3 Indicted in Sophisticated Hacking Scheme
I like how this Associated Press article tries to make these hackers sound all sophisticated. The fact that these geniuses were busted trying to use stolen gift cards shows you just how smart they really are.
Prosecutors say that once the men hacked into the wireless hotspots or burglarized the businesses, they obtained financial data, hijacked payroll systems, stole the identities of employees and routed pay checks to accounts they'd set up in the employees' names. Then, they gave themselves raises. "Once the hackers are in the system, they have a smorgasbord" — and can use the information to open bank accounts, compromise the personal credit information of employees, and access PayPal, Amazon and eBay accounts, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Warma.

Is HP Competing For "Worst Board Ever" Honors?
You know your company is in trouble when Reuters flat out asks if you are competing for the title of "worst board ever." Ouch.
If the board of Hewlett-Packard Co is not already ranked as one of the worst in corporate America, there are some who think it could be a contender. HP shares surged on Wednesday after sources said the board was meeting and might oust Chief Executive Leo Apotheker after less than a year on the job.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO
The crew at HardwareLOOK had a lot of nice things to say about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO copper heatpipe HSF. Here's a quote from the review to get you started:
The Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO has proven to achieve rock solid temperatures many water-cooling setups would struggle to achieve. With the addition of the micro fan mounted on the block, your RAM and North Bridge will also stay cool, allowing for some excellent overclocking headroom.

According to this press release, Anonymous is planning a "day of vengeance." What the hell does that even mean?
Late last night, Anonymous--or at least people claiming to be from Anonymous--posted a press release on Pastebin, saying that Saturday will be marked by peaceful protests in cities across the U.S. combined with cyberattacks on "various targets, including Wall Street, Corrupt Banking Institutions, and the New York City Police Department."

Netflix CEO Jokes That Investors May Be Trying To Poison Him
It's nice to see Netflix's CEO joking on his Facebook page about investors trying to poison him. Why should investors be mad? It's not like share prices are half what they were just two months ago. Wait...what?
In a posting on his Facebook wall, Hastings writes, "In Wyoming with 10 investors at a ranch/retreat. I think I might need a food taster. I can hardly blame them." Interesting that he chose to post this on Facebook, the company whose head-scratching design overhaul may have ultimately overshadowed Hasting's Qwikster announcement.

Senate Judiciary Committee Grills Google
Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust panel grilled Eric Schmidt today accusing Google of "cooking" search results.
Lee said that search rankings for price comparison sites -- Nextag, PriceGrabber and Shopper -- varied while Google's shopping site consistently ranked third. "I see you magically coming up third every time," Lee said. "I don't know whether you call this a separate algorithm or whether you've reverse engineered one algorithm, but either way you've cooked it, so that you're always third."
