Asus Eee Tablet to debut in Q1 2011 bearing a new name :: Posted by THRASHER2
Asus' e-reader/digital notebook revealed at Computex this year is still a go, apparently, and is said to be set for an early 2011 introduction under a new name. Previously, Asus called the device the Eee Tablet but that will be changed to something like Digital Note or Eee Note.
The new name isn't expected to be paired up with a specs change so we 'still' have an 8-inch touchscreen with a 1024 x 768 resolution and 64 shared of gray, a microSD card slot, and probably, some wireless connectivity. More info about this device is likely to be revealed at CES 2011 in early January.

Skyfire sends warning to Apple :: Posted by THRASHER2
Allow Flash on the iPhone
The success of the botched Skyfire addon to the iPhone sent out a stark warning to Jobs' Mob to end its campaign against Flash. In the few days since its launch Skyfire grossed almost $1 million selling about 100,000 copies during the first five hours of release and 200,000 more during the weekend.
It might have been a lot more. Servers began faltering, Skyfire pulled its own app from the App Store to avoid a crash. Since then, the company doubled its capacity and has been adding more users "in batches" that the servers can handle. The software is not that great in that it is just a workaround to play Flash on iPhone and yet users are clamouring for it.
If Steve Jobs sat down and allowed users to run flash on his shiny toys then he could come up with a better solution and everyone would be happy. The Skyfire release means that despite all the propaganda Steve has lauched against Flash, iPhone users still want it.
Of course we can't see him changing his mind. That would require several changes to the laws of physics. It is trivial for Steve Jobs to stick Flash on the iPhone however it would displace time and space if he was ever to admit he was wrong.

AMD Cayman pushed back to December 13 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Still before Christmas
We just got a nice little tip from one of our trusted sources that AMD just gave an official new date for Cayman launch, the 13th of December. This means that despite a brief delay, Cayman will still be on retail/e-tail shops before Christmas, and if the performance is right, will end up to be the fastest single GPU card this year.
The new date was given by AMD officially and probably sent to all partners and selected editors. It looks like the problem is quite real and partners mostly don't care about this delay as they have enough other cards to sell and as long as the card comes before Christmas. According to what we know, partners didn't recieve the final BIOS or the final driver for that matter, but that should hopefully change by the end of the month.
We are quite sure that we'll hear more about AMD's Cayman once it gets its final driver, as until then, the performance details are purely speculative and any early benchmark figures seen so far should be taken with a grain of salt, as proper drivers could squeeze out a bit more performance.

Geforce GTX 560 comes next year has 384 shaders :: Posted by THRASHER2
GF114 with 8 clusters enabled
Geforce GTX 460 was Nvidia's life saver, and all reports are indicating that it has been selling well. Even AMD admitted that to its analists. This is the main reason why Nvidia wonÂ’t release a new GTX 560 until early next year. This is the card that is supposed to replace the GTX 460.
The new card is based on GF114 chip, which is an improved GF104 with better clocks and all eight clusters enabled. If you enable all eight clusters the number of shaders jumps from current 336 to 384. The math behind is very simple. “Each Streaming Multiprocessor(SM) in the GPU of GF104/106/108 architecture contains 48 SPs and 8 SFUs Special Function Unit” more here.
Also the complete GF104 core contains 64 texture address units and 512 texture filtering units. The number of SFUs jumps from 56 to 64. You can also expect a significant increase in clock speed as well as memory and the “new” card will run at higher than 675MHz core and 1350MHz shaders.
The launch of the card is a sales decision and it will come only if Radeon HD 6870 and 6850 see dramatic price cuts and put additional pressure on Nvidia. If all goes as planned you will see this card early next year.
We expect some average 15 to 20 percent performance increase from GTX 560 compared to GTX 460.
Of course GF104 had all these clusters inside but Nvidia has simply dissabled one as it didn't need so much performance back at the summer time.

PC version Black Ops still has issues :: Posted by THRASHER2
A combination of stuttering and lag
It seems that no matter whether you have the best of the best in PC hardware, it is no match for the stuttering and lag issues that buyers of the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops are experiencing. As the number of reports and unhappy PC players of the title continue to grow, the developers at Treyarch continue to try to determine a course of corrective action to resolve the issue.
The lag seems to be more pronounced in the multiplayer modes, while the stuttering issues that max out the CPU seem to be worst in the moments in the game with the least amount of action or in the cut scenes, for example. Speculation seems to be that a memory leak might be the problem, but so far that is just speculation from what users are reporting.
Treyarch has not officially responded to the complaints, but some forum posts confirm that they are aware of the issue and are working on the problem. At this point there continues to be no official word of when to expect a patch, but we believe that they are working on one.
The reported PC server browser issues that seemed to have been a problem right at launch have apparently been resolved by some server side adjustments, according to the whispers that we hear.

Lots of tablets coming :: Posted by THRASHER2
Nvidia claims
Jolly Green giant boss, Nvidia CEOs Jen-Hsun Huang claims that Tablets are not a fad and that a flood of Android tablets are on the way. He repeated that the new wave of Tablets have to be "truly remarkable" in order to compete with the iPad and claimed that notebooks may suffer.
Nvidia reported earnings today for its most recent quarter, ending October 31. Its profit slipped to $84.9 millionfrom $107.6 million in the year-earlier quarter. But earnings were up from this year's previous quarter, when the company posted a loss of $141.0 million. Revenue was down to $843.9 million from $903.2 million reported a year ago.
Nvidia is hoping to do well out of android. Its Tegra processor is expected to appear in a number of Android tablets. However these have been delayed by a "few months" because Nvidia, Google, and tablet manufacturers want to make sure they get it right out of the gate in order to compete effectively against Apple's iPad.
He said that the Samsung Galaxy Tab was a tablet that uses a phone operating system on a large display. A tablet is not a large phone. Huang said that upcoming tablets would use the dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor which would provide higher performance and much, much better multitasking and better graphics. This will lead to a different experience than the iPad, Huang thinks.

Elpida ships 32GB Load LRDIMM :: Posted by THRASHER2
Really dense memory
Elpida has announced that has begun sample shipments of its new 32GB Load Reduced Dual In-Line Memory Modules (LRDIMM).
It claims that the beasts are the DRAM industry's highest density memory module. The LRDIMM consists of 72 advanced 40nm process 4Gb DDR3 SDRAM chips in a Double Density Package.
Elpida hopes that LRDIMM will become the new standard for server memory modules. It reduces I/O bus capacity by buffering the I/O bus line with the memory buffer to simultaneously enable higher system density and faster speed.
JEDEC, a standardization body for the semiconductor industry, is studying the adoption of LRDIMM standards. Elpida is actively engaged in promoting its own standard.
Conventional Registered DIMM in a two-way server system only allows a maximum of 16 DIMM whereas LRDIMM allows up to 24 DIMM in the same system. Elpida claims that 24 of its 32GB LRDIMM creates a next-generation 768GB capacity platform, or 1.5 times that of a system equipped with RDIMM.
It has a speed of 1600Mbps, which is 20 per cent faster than the highest RDIMM speed of 1333Mbps, the outfit said.

Powercolor preparing HD 6870 PCS+ :: Posted by THRASHER2
Updated: Overclocked to 940MHz
In addition to the recently released HD 6850 PCS+, Powercolor has just detailed its new HD 6870 card that will be a part of its factory overclocked PCS+ line. The new HD 6870 PCS+ card will feature a custom dual-slot cooler and a pretty decent factory overclock.
We manage to find out that the new HD 6870 PCS+ card will end up overclocked to 940MHz for the GPU and 4400MHz for memory. This is a decent factory overclock that takes the card from its reference 900MHz for the GPU and 4200MHz for memory. The card still comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface, has two DVI, HDMI and two mini DisplayPort outputs and needs two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors.
The card should end up a bit cooler and quieter than the reference one and the official announcement should come sometimes next week. You can check out more pictures at Powercolor's Facebook page.
Update: Powercolor saw that nice little comment below and was kind enough to inform us that the HD 6870 PCS+ will indeed feature a software voltage control and will not use a cheaper voltage regulator. Hopefully some reviews will show up pretty soon and we'll know for sure.

GPU-Z throttles the GTX 580 back up :: Posted by THRASHER2
Wizzard conjures its magic
All of you have probably already heard and seen Nvidia's latest trick with which its GTX 580 card simply throttles down once it hits its power consumption peak. Nvidia's throttling came to a bitter end as Wizzard from TechpowerUp site has conjured up its new version of GPU-Z software that can go around Nvidia's throttling function.
With throttling, Nvidia made sure that the TDP remained pretty low as the clock speed throttling logic simply reduced the clock speeds once it hit the magic number. It has also prevented the card to work at its full potential and has prevented most of the review sites to use Furmark or OCCT in order to push it to its limits. Overclockers were keen to see how fast this card could go and now it's a simple matter of running the new GPU-Z with the "/GTX580OCP" command-line.
Of course, TechPowerup was quick to note that they are not responsible for any damage caused by this. They also ran Furmark test in order to see the "real" power consumption and guess what, it is really somewhere at 350W, at least when pushed by Furmark.

Nvidia done with chipsets :: Posted by THRASHER2
Tegra SoC is the way to go
This Thursday, NvidiaÂ’s CEO officially announced that the company is no longer building chipsets, with the company focusing on SoCs. We can't say we are surprised though, as Nvidia hasn't had the best of times lately and the company merged chipset and SoC teams earlier this year.
In the words of Jensen, the decision comes as a result of chipset business not growing this year, NvidiaÂ’s failure to expand the sales of chipsets and because the company is keen on perfecting its Tegra systems on a chip.
This means that Nvidia will stop with its orders for necessary chips and production is no more, but certain chipsets will stay for a while more. Namely, NvidiaÂ’s AMD chipset offer still stands strong and the MCP89 is set to stay for a while as well.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro out :: Posted by THRASHER2
Because sometimes you need a professional
Adobe has just released its latest version of Acrobat. Armed with the catchy name Adobe Acrobat X Pro, the software is designed to work better with Microsoft Office 2010.
It allows customising PDF portfolios and an improved optimised viewing mode. One feature, the convert or scan to PDF, will allow users to convert documents, emails, spreadsheets and websites into a quick and simple PDF form that can be viewed on a mobile device or a smart phone.
Users can export and edit PDF files by converting them to either Excel or Word and still be able to maintain the positioning of tables, columns and font attributes. Upgrades start around $199.00 for Adobe Acrobat X Pro, and $799.00 for Acrobat X Suite, which includes versions of Photoshop CS5, Captivate 5, Presenter 7, LiveCycle Designer ES2 and Adobe Media Encoder CS5.

Six new Radeon 6000 parts show up :: Posted by THRASHER2
Some APUs, some renamed Evergreen 5000 cards
It looks like the six new Radeon listed in the new developers driver feature some renames and some of the first APUs to be released by AMD.
The new brands include ATI Radeon HD 6230, ATI Radeon HD 6250, ATI Radeon HD 6290, ATI Radeon HD 6390, ATI Radeon HD 6510 and ATI Radeon HD 6750.
This is not a typo the actual listing actually say that the cards are ATIÂ’s and not AMDÂ’s. Someone wonÂ’t be happy about it.
These are two possibilities as the Radeon HD 6200 can be either renamed Radeon HD 54x0 and 5500 series or it can be the brand that they will use for faster unannounced Zacate Fusion GPU. The later is quite unlikely as they already set the Radeon HD 6310 for 500MHz clocked Zacate, but you never know. If itÂ’s a 5000 rename itÂ’s a Redwood based chip, at least it should be.
The ATI Radeon HD 6510 has 68D9 product ID, something that fits in ATI Radeon HD 5690 brand name. This could be a part reserved for OEM customers. The most powerful rename is the ATI Radeon HD 6750, based on ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series and Juniper codenamed chip.

Intel slashes SSD pricing :: Posted by THRASHER2
And adds a new 120GB model
Xmas is approaching and, as weÂ’ve learned to expect, companies are working round the clock to lure more customers. This time around, Intel announced a new 120GB SSD model and announced price cuts, something we all love to hear.
The 80GB X25-M Mainstream SATA SSD now sells for US$179 whereas its big brother, the 160GB X25-M, sells for US$399. The newly announced 120GB version of the Intel X25-M will sell for US$239 whereas the 40GB Intel X25-V "boot drive" now goes for $99. All prices are for quantities of 1,000.
Troy Winslow, director of product marketing at Intel NAND Solutions Group said how “Every year at Christmas, customers are looking for attractive new technical devices” and that thanks to that, SSDs are slowly creeping into mainstream.
Well, at least they didn’t give us the “We wanted to help and surprise our customers because we’re a caring bunch” talk, for which every sane adult knows it's bull-feces in their purest form. So, for your honesty, have a premature Marry Xmas and may Santa bring you much profit.
