Everything USB
Drobo S RAID-based Drive Welcomes USB 3.0

While Network Attached Storage is great for many needs, for some things like daily backups of your system, nothing beats direct attached storage. Even better is USB 3.0 direct attached sotage solutions as they are plug and play simple yet just as fast (if not faster) than eSATA options. When you combine speed, ease of use and RAID the end result can be down right Nirvana for power users and SOHO sysadmins! One such company that has recently started getting an enviable reputation for RAID based storage solutions is US Robotics and their Drobo line. The latest addition to this line is their all new Drobo S which combines not only USB 3.0, FireWire 800 and eSATA connection options with Windows, Mac and Linux support but also various RAID options including RAID 5 and RAID 6 for multiple hard drive failure protection! Quite literally this five bay (hot swappable) storage solution cannot only connect to darn near any computer, via one of its three ports, but also has the reliability and protection to make it a hit for home users and small business alike! With a price of that starts at $799 and goes all the way up to $1,799 (for a 10TB version) this may not be the right solution for everyone but it sounds like for those that can afford it, it WILL be a great option.

iMo Eye9 - A 9" USB Touchscreen with Webcam

For certain scenarios, having a second monitor can really come in handy; yet having a large dedicated second LCD monitor is simple out of the question. For situations like this USB monitors can really be a viable option as they are usually a heck of a lot more portable than a "real" monitor is AND when not in use they can be unplugged and tucked away fairly quickly. In the past, Nanovision has created some nifty USB monitors (like the iMo Plus and clam-shell UM-740) and their all new iMo Eye9 is no exception. It is not only a large NINE inch 1024x600 USB based monitor, it is also a 9" TOUCH SCREEN monitor! This means you can in theory use it as not only a passive device, but use also as an active input device! Have a picture you need to do some Photoshop touch-up work on? Why not "draw" on the screen to edit it. This is just one of the myriad of possible scenarios we can see where this bad boy would be perfect. Add in the fact that iMo Eye9 is USB powered so there is only ONE cable to worry about, a removable 1.3MP web cam and you have the makings of one nice little peripheral! The only issue besides the asking price of $229.99, is the fact that it use resistive technology which means an extra layer over the monitor's screen. Based on past experience, this means more reflections off the screen which can be annoying. All in all, iMo Eye9 sounds like a very tempting peripheral for many, but may not be right for ALL.

Verbatim MediaShare Mini is Another Pogoplug-wannabe

Networking Attached Storage (NAS) is certainly a wonderful invention and I personally can not imagine life without my three NAS units. Sadly, the one thing almost all traditional NAS devices have in common: they are BIG! Not everyone can devote a closet or even a full shelf for something that they may or may not even need. This is where NAS-wannabe devices (such as the Seagate GoFlex Net) come in, as they give you a degree of flexibility that a traditional NAS can not match. Taking this flexibility and freedom of choice to the next level is the Verbatim MediaShare Mini which not only comes with absolutely ZERO storage, it doesn’t even come with any internal storage capabilities! While not a completely unique idea, the small size combined with 4 USB ports of flexibility IS unique. You literally get four USB ports, an Ethernet port all wrapped up in a package so small as to be down right minuscule! With no internal storage abilities, the Verbatim MediaShare Mini cannot only be smaller than anyone could ever expect a "four drive" NAS to be, but it also allows you to use darn near ANY USB-enabled storage device, whether it be a portable drive or flash drive. As time goes by and you find yourself needing more space, all you need do is plug in a 2nd, 3rd or 4th drive. You can start as small, and as frugally as you wish, and the Verbatim MediaShare Mini will grow only as your needs and budgets demand. The nifty device also comes with built-in support for remote access from iPhone, iPad, Android devices and Blackberry. The only downside to this ultra small package is the speeds you get from your all new MediaShare Mini "NAS" will be limited more by the USB 2.0 interface than your Ethernet, but at a mere $90 it may just be a great way to get into the wonderful world of Network Attached Storage.
