Philips Hue Excludes 3rd Party Bulbs With Firmware Update
You know how printer companies force you to only use "approved" ink? It would seem that the same thing is now happening with high-tech light bulbs.

The recent change seems to suggest any non-Philips bulbs from manufacturers such as Cree, GE, and Osram will not be supported in many situations, whereas "Friends of Hue" branded product are. At the time of publication, it's unclear whether 3rd party bulbs will stop working immediately after the firmware update or if they may only become inaccessible after the bridge is reset.

Pirating Subscribers Could Cost Cox Over $200 Million
I can't help myself, I have to crack a "Piracy is not a victimless crime" joke. I think Cox might be learning this the hard way right about now.

Internet provider Cox Communications is facing more than $200 million in potential damages, if a jury holds it responsible for the copyright infringements of its subscribers. According to music publisher BMG there is no doubt that Cox is responsible. After a week of trial hearings the company has asked the court to confirm this, arguing that the ISP failed to rebut its allegations.

Major Publishers Sued For Patent Infringement Over Fantasy Sports
Activision, EA, Take-Two, Zynga and Konami are being sued over a pair of fantasy sports patents owned by a company called Virtual Gaming Technologies. I hope these guys have really good lawyers, a lot of money or both because we all know that the companies they are suing have all the above.

Texas-based Virtual Gaming Technologies, LLC, filed the case yesterday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, claiming Activision is infringing on patents it owns for "real-time interaction systems" most used in fantasy sports games. The technology covered by those patents involves giving fantasy sports players access to updated information about their players' performances during live, ongoing contests.

Samsung Takes Apple Patent Battle To US Supreme Court
I guess we know what Samsung meant earlier this month when the company said it reserved all rights to reclaim or obtain reimbursement from Apple (here). The ongoing battle between these two is now headed to the Supreme Court.

If the Supreme Court decides to take the case, its eventual decision could have a ripple effect on the technology industry and the kinds of gadgets you'll be able to buy. Samsung and some of Silicon Valley's biggest players, including Google and Facebook, have argued that the lower-court ruling as it stands may have a "devastating impact" on the introduction of new products because of a heightened fear of legal challenges. Apple said all along that it was doing what was necessary to defend its intellectual property and the value of its blockbuster iPhone franchise.

Ken Levine's Take On System Shock 3
In an upcoming interview with The Game Informer Show, Ken Levine gave his thoughts on the recently announced System Shock 3. Overall, it seems like he was pretty supportive of Otherside Entertainment's upcoming sequel.

"I wish them the best," Levine said. "I have a personal connection to System Shock, [System Shock 2] was the first game I ever shipped. We were completely stumbling around in the dark on that game… so the impact that it had was a complete surprise to us. Without that game, there's nothing else for us. Nothing would have happened. So I have a deep connection with it... I'm excited, I hope they can figure it out and make a cool game out of it."

EFF: DEA Has Deleted Its Phone Call Database
The Electronic Frontier Foundation announced today that it has confirmation that the Drug Enforcement Administration's practice of collecting bulk phone call data has stopped and that the database has finally been destroyed.

From the 1990s to 2013, the DEA secretly and illegally collected billions of records of Americans' international calls to hundreds of countries around the world.
