ASUS Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1 Review
Hardware Canucks has published a review of the ASUS Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1 today. You can see our evaluation here for comparison purposes.

With a staggering 21 different models, ASUS' Z170 motherboard lineup can be confusing for first-time buyers but there are certain products within it that truly stand out. One of those highlights is the Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1 which may not have the RoG's gamer-oriented focus or every conceivable feature like the Deluxe. It does however strike an excellent balance between perceived durability and high level features one would expect from a $250 motherboard.

Silicon Valley Is Ruthless To Old People
Be honest, we all know people move to Palo Alto to be next to Mark Zuckerberg, not old people. Hell, even Mark Zuckerburg bought up all the houses around him so he wouldn't have to live next to undesirables.

Sometime in July 2012, Suzan Russaw and her husband, James, received a letter from their landlord asking them to vacate their $800-a-month one-bedroom apartment in Palo Alto, California. He gave them 60 days to leave. The "no-fault" eviction is a common way to clear out low-paying tenants without a legal hassle and bring in people willing to pay thousands more in rent.

Seattle Considers Allowing Uber And Lyft Drivers To Unionize
So what do you guys think about this whole union rights for Uber and Lyft drivers? Good idea? Bad idea?

On Monday, the Seattle City Council plans to vote on a proposed law to give freelance, on-demand drivers like Mr. Creery the right to collectively negotiate on pay and working conditions, a right historically reserved for regular employees. Mr. Creery and hundreds of fellow drivers in Seattle helped push for the legislation. The hope, he said, is to give drivers more say on how much they should be paid.

U.S. International Trade Commission Declines to Review NVIDIA Patent Suit
The U.S. International Trade Commission today declined our request to review a recent decision involving NVIDIA by one of its administrative law judges. He had ruled in October that Samsung and Qualcomm infringed one of our graphics patents, which wasn't valid, and did not infringe two of our other patents. While today's ruling ends this particular case in the ITC, we remain firm in our belief that our patents are valid and have been infringed and will look to appeal the ITC's decision. We will continue to provide updates on our blog when something material happens.

NY Attorney General Wants Public To Report Broadband Speeds
If you are a resident of New York, the state government wants your help going after large internet service providers that are not delivering advertised speeds.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman invited the public on Sunday to test the speed of their Internet and submit the results online as part of an ongoing probe into whether large providers may be short-changing customers with slower-than-advertised speeds. The office launched an investigation into Verizon Communications Inc, Cablevision Systems Corp and Time Warner Cable Inc in October over the issue.

Former Google VP: Machines Emotionally Intelligent In 2016
Andrew Moore, the Former Vice President at Google and current Dean of the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science says that machines will become self aware in 2016 and kill us all. Whoops, I meant to say emotionally intelligent, my bad.

"There will be immediate positive uses," he explains over the phone. "Monitoring a patient in the ER with an emotionally intelligent computer will enable doctors to sense discomfort when the patient is incapable of communicating. Measuring student engagement by looking at a students' emotional reaction will help teachers be more effective. Those are clear wins."

Solar Energy Farm Would 'Suck Up All The Energy From The Sun'
I have heard some crazy things in my day but this takes the cake. I double checked to make sure this wasn't a post from a satire site but it is indeed a true story. Thanks to cageymaru for the link.

"You're killing your town," he said. "All the young people are going to move out." He said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland.

Text Me? Ping Me? Communications Overload In The Digital Age
I know most of you use a variety of messaging apps but are any of you as bad as this guy? Don't be shy, you are among friends here, it's okay to share.

In all, on my phone right now, I have at least a dozen apps that allow me to get in touch with people. There's standard text messaging; video messaging apps like Snapchat and FaceTime; work-related channels (Outlook, LinkedIn); dating apps (Tinder, OKCupid); and social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) — and that's before you get into the niche and even absurd, like GroupMe (messaging for groups) and Venmo (which is for paying people, but requires you to add a message with your payment). And, of course, there are dozens (hundreds!) more that I don't use at all.

Twitter Warns Of Government 'Hacking'
Apparently a small group of Twitter users have been targeted by "state-sponsored" hackers. The e-mail from Twitter didn't specify which government they believed to be behind the attacks.

"We believe that these actors (possibly associated with a government) may have been trying to obtain information such as email addresses, IP addresses, and/or phone numbers. At this time, we have no evidence they obtained your account information, but we're actively investigating this matter. We wish we had more we could share, but we don't have any additional information we can provide at this time."
