Half-Life 2: Episode Four
Is it weird that we seem to know more about Episode Four than Episode Three? The story is that there were a couple of Half-Life spin-offs in development that were eventually cancelled; this was Arkane Studios' version: "Return to Ravenholm."

…these new screenshots come to us via the personal portfolio of Robert Wilinski, a Senior Environment Artist at Arkane Studios between 2007 and 2008, who was likely an important component within the "Return to Ravenholm" and "The Crossing" projects. A deeper discussion of these screenshots can be found in the Spotlight Exclusive episode listed above.

Will Technology Progress Enough To Save Us From The Dying Sun?
Pretty sure that none of us will even be around by then, but I guess this is something you can think about when you're on the can.

We need another method of reaching the stars than our current, less than the speed of light restricted means we have now. The nearest star may be only 4 light years away, but in real time, that means more like 70 thousand years travel. Creating large biodomes in space is fraught with problems too, such as radiation, meteorites and micrometeorites, unseen black holes and dark objects, and on and on. Don't comment about wormholes, either. They're only theorized mathematically, and even then, only very small ones.

Be Wary Of Ending A Text Message With A Period
It is truly the end times if being grammar conscious makes others suspicious of your intent.

…a sentence ending in a period suggests the other person put at least a little time and effort into composing their reply. If you take time to consider your answer, it opens the possibility of mendacity. In contrast, if you answer spontaneously and informally, the message presumably reflects your instantaneous gut response — which is honest by definition.

Why I Love The "Star Wars" Prequels (And You Should, Too)
I hope the author wrote this under a pseudonym; that's a bold thing to admit. But really, the prequels weren't a complete loss, as they did give us another batch of excellent soundtracks by John Williams.

The prequels tell a different kind of story than the original trilogy told, which was jarring for many fans. Instead of a hero's journey to victory, they depict a hero's fall from grace, a tragedy that is harder to bring to life onscreen. Coupled with the fact that Lucas -- with significantly improved technology behind him this time around-- chose a different visual style, the first three episodes of the series often feel as if they are part of a different universe.

B-52: The Air Force Plane That Refuses To Die
I thought this was a nice write-up on our largest bomber, which is expected to be around "until at least 2040."

"I love the B-52," Captain Adsit said. "But the fact that this is still flying is really insane." A few minutes later, his onboard navigation computers crashed.

Sega Cuts Full-Year Profit Estimate By 90 Percent
Wait, does this mean we're not getting Dreamcast 2?

In the Entertainment Contents Business - essentially the games division - Sega cited "intensifying" competition within the Japanese market, and the need for longer development lead times as a result. This is likely a reference to the company's relatively barren schedule of new releases, which it claimed has also been altered by delays.

Google's Project Fi: "I'd Switch To It If I Could"
Here's a very positive review for Google's cellular service program. Who is on Fi, and how do you like it?

…that's really where the value of Fi comes in. For about $20 a month, you get unlimited calls, unlimited domestic and international texting and WiFi tethering. From there, you'll have to cough up about $10 per GB of data, which sounds like a lot, but if you're using WiFi most of the time, that shouldn't be a big deal. And, best of all, if you're particularly stingy about your data use, Google will actually refund you the money for any unused data.

Kazakhstan Will Require All Citizens To Install A Backdoor On Their Devices
The good news is that most of us don't live in Kazakhstan or plan to.

By forcing all Internet users to install their own issued certificate, the local government effectively has a backdoor on each device, allowing it to sniff encrypted Internet traffic. Of course, this certificate can also be abused by cyber-criminals, who can use it to perform man-in-the-middle attacks, especially for collecting financial details transmitted via online payments.

Electric Cars Can't Take The Cold
Evidently, temperature has quite the effect on the distance that an electric car can run.

The trouble is, except for Oregon, none of the states have California's temperate weather. The batteries used by the greener cars generate electricity from chemical reactions that work less efficiently as temperatures drop. In tests conducted by the American Automobile Association, an electric car that ran for 105 miles at 75F went only 43 miles at 20F—a 60 percent reduction in range.

Doubling RAM On Smartphones Is "Silly"
Your thoughts? I can't say I agree, since many seem to be obsessed with higher resolutions, not to mention the sea of poorly optimized and memory hungry apps out there.

Many people can run their new PCs with a fairly comfortable 4GB of Ram and 8GB is only required for power users. For everything that I have said about Apple, the outfit has a more pragmatic attitude to RAM. iPhones have always had less RAM than their Android competitors and managed to do rather well. Increased RAM will just look good on the spec sheet. It will, for a number of years, be pretty much useless.

Toshiba, Fujitsu, Vaio Reportedly Discussing Massive PC Merger
Check out the pie chart. If this merger happens, they'll be even bigger than Lenovo (in Japan).

Analysts said the benefits of a tie-up are clear because the three PC makers have been looking to streamline their businesses in a shrinking market. But the analysts see limited scope for greater competitiveness, given there is little room for growth. They doubt the PC titan would be able to come up with new, must-have products, although each would bring special knowledge to the table.

Researchers Discover Pharmaceutical Recipe For Painlessness
It appears that we may have found a real alternative to traditional painkillers such as morphine, with none of the bad side effects like dependence.

"Used in combination with Nav1.7 blockers, the dose of opioid needed to prevent pain is very low," explains Professor Wood. "People with non-functioning Nav1.7 produce low levels of opioids throughout their lives without developing tolerance or experiencing unpleasant side-effects. We hope to see our approach tested in human trials by 2017 and we can then start looking into drug combinations to help the millions of chronic pain patients around the world."

Tech Giants Say Verizon's New Cellular Tech Could Wreck Wi-Fi
Verizon and other wireless carriers don't seem to care and are willing to go full steam ahead.

"Wi-Fi has this inherent politeness," says Rob Alderfer, vice president for technology policy at researcher CableLabs, which is funded by cable companies. LTE-U "can essentially take over," he says, crowding out Wi-Fi signals. Cable industry lobbyist Wi-Fi Alliance says LTE-U should undergo a lengthy approval process to make sure it won't disturb existing networks.

FSP Hydro G 750W Power Supply Review
FSP has been a bit more pronounced on our PSU radar lately. Today we have its Hydro G 750 watt unit. From what we can tell by taking it apart, there is no water inside. It does however boast full wattage at 50c ambient temperatures, "server grade circuit," and an "advanced thermal layout design." Let's see how it fares our gauntlet.
