Apple Deactivates Its News App In China
It looks like Apple has disabled their news app because they haven't figured out how to deal with the censorship laws there. With China as their "second-largest source of revenue after the US," it's odd that they bothered making it available at all without first addressing what was probably expected.

Those in China who look at the top of the Apple News feed, which would normally display a list of selected articles based on a user's preferred media, instead see an error message: "Can't refresh right now. News isn't supported in your current region."

How Hard Is It To Legally Buy A Gun In Cities Around The World?
Here's a look at how the process of obtaining a firearm differs between a few US cities and places from around the world.

The steps below are simplified and don't include every method of obtaining a gun, just the easiest. We didn't include every single detail of each application, but rather wanted to convey a sense of the number of hoops needed to jump through to purchase a firearm legally in these cities.

Daniel Craig Would Rather Kill Himself Than Play James Bond Again
I saw this headline earlier this week and thought it was funny until I realized he might be serious. Who do you think should play 007 next?

When asked who should be appointed his Bond successor, Craig replies, "Look, I don't give a fuck. Good luck to them!"

What Really Keeps Women Out Of Tech
So basically, women aren't in tech because they're superficial?

Dr. Cheryan and her colleagues have found that female students are more interested in enrolling in a computer class if they are shown a classroom (whether virtual or real) decorated not with "Star Wars" posters, science-fiction books, computer parts and tech magazines, but with a more neutral décor — art and nature posters, coffee makers, plants and general-interest magazines.

L16 52-Megapixel Camera Features 16 Lenses And Fits In Your Pocket
If these new camera concepts work out, I'm going to miss the days of exotic equipment and the fact that you needed some level of artistic or technical expertise to take a good photo.

Shooting with multiple camera modules also enables you to adjust depth of field even after the picture has been taken. And because the final image is extremely high-resolution, the photo you took of your child on stage from the back of the auditorium is going going to be crisp and clear, even after aggressive cropping.

The White House Backs Down On Phone Encryption
Obama is backing away from legislation that would allow agencies access to encrypted information—officially, at least.

The decision comes after a year after encryption introduced on iPhones and some Android phones sparked a debate between law enforcement and tech companies over access to phone data. With iOS 8, most data stored on the phone and communications over services like iMessage were encrypted in a way that only users could access it — not even Apple could.

Antioxidants May Make Cancer Worse
New research suggests that supplements could actually increase cancer risk.

These molecular investigations shed light on the large human trials that have implicated antioxidants in cancer. It is possible that the supplements did not triggercancer but rather accelerated the progression of existing undiagnosed cancers, making later discovery of the disease likely. In other words, it "could be that while antioxidants might prevent DNA damage—and thus impede tumor initiation—once a tumor is established, antioxidants might facilitate the malignant behavior of cancer cells," Schafer says.

Twitter Planning Company-Wide Layoffs Next Week
Also on Twitter's to-do list: Figuring out how to make money from a service a lot of people use.

Those close to the company have argued for years that Twitter has become too bloated. It reported roughly 4,100 employees last quarter, more than double the roughly 2,000 employees it had in Q2 2013 just before the IPO. Twitter's user base has grown less than 50 percent in that time. Of course, some of the growth has come via acquisitions — Twitter has made plenty over the past two years. But still, the feeling from those close to the company is that Twitter's engineering team is much larger than it needs to be.

Cosplay From The NYCC Comic-Con
Here's a look at some of the contestants of the NYCC Eastern Championships of Cosplay contest. I'm going to guess that the Hulkbuster has a good chance of winning.

The contestants donned costumes from five different categories, Comic Books, Movies & Television, Video Games, Anime and Fantasy. They are judged on the authenticity, technique and fit of their costumes. The cash prize is $5,000 and the winner will also be automatically qualified for the final round of 2016 C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay in Chicago, the final stop in the Quest for the Crown.

USITC: Samsung Did Not Infringe Nvidia Graphics Chip Patents
Samsung, which had been accused by Nvidia of using its patents on graphics chip technology without permission or compensation, is apparently now in the clear.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has been cleared on its use of graphics chip technology owned by Nvidia Corp without permission, in a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling on Friday. Judge Thomas Pender said Samsung did not infringe two Nvidia patents, and while it did infringe a third, he ruled that patent is invalid because it was not a new invention compared with previously known patents.

Boeing Presents The Lightest Metal Ever
Now Boeing just needs to make the strongest metal ever and call it Vibranium.

Microlattice is the lightest metal ever made. At 99.99% air, it's light enough to balance on top of a dandelion, while its structure makes it strong. Strength and record breaking lightness make it a potential metal for future planes and vehicles.

Google's Inability To Force Software Updates Threatens Android
It has been nearly a year since the previous version of Android debuted, so it is time for the annual articles on how poor the distribution is and what Google is going to do to "fix" the update process. Recent vulnerability issues with things like StageFright certainly aren't helping.

Unfortunately, there's no sign (beyond a little bit of psychology) that Google is able to force through a change that would improve the update situation in 2016. That alone speaks both to the weakness of Android, and the weakness of Google in the ecosystem. With more commercial pressures likely to be placed on Android manufacturers next year to reduce both the build cost and the ongoing support costs to maximise the profit in the low-margin high-volume market spaces, it's unlikely that Android is going to improve on its ability to update itself one a handset leaves the factory.

Windows 10 Didn't Stop PC Sales From Dropping This Summer
While this article puts most of the blame on manufacturers releasing Windows 10 on older hardware, I'm thinking that it also had to do with the (relatively) simple and free upgrade process.

As the analyst firms explain, Microsoft's fast-tracked release left many PC makers shipping existing systems with Windows 10, which weren't going to drive demand as much as brand new models. You're not going to buy a months-old laptop just because it's running new software, are you? The big question is whether or not the wave of new Windows 10 PCs launching this fall will make a difference -- if there's still a sharp decline, the industry is really in trouble.
