Transformer fire causes shut-down of nuclear reactor north of New York City

By
Scott DiSavino and Lisa Lambert NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A
nuclear power reactor 40 miles (65 km) north of New York City was shut
down on Saturday after a transformer fire, but officials said the Indian
Point plant was stable and there was no threat to residents nearby.
People in the area reported an explosion and smoke coming from the plant
at Buchanan in New York state. They are not unheard of and the plant
responded as designed," NRC spokesman Eliot Brenner said in a statement.
The NRC designated the incident an "unusual event," which is the lowest
of four categories the agency gives to potential safety or security
threats at nuclear plants.

Seeking Hispanic vote, Hillary Clinton defends illegal immigrants

The
11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States don't vote, but
they have children, siblings or cousins who do, and Hillary Clinton is
courting their support. The Democratic presidential candidate has
singled out immigration as a key campaign issue in her bid for the White
House in 2016. She is looking to set herself apart from her Republican
rivals on the matter, and has even said she wants to go further than
President Barack Obama to secure legal status, and citizenship, for
millions of undocumented immigrants, most of whom are Hispanic. The move
is a strategic one: securing the Hispanic vote could be what Clinton --
or any candidate -- needs to become president in the next election.

Report: North Korea test-fires submarine-launch ballistic missile

By
Jack Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Saturday it had
successfully test-fired a ballistic missile from a submarine, a step
that would mark significant progress in the secretive state's military
capabilities. It could pose a new threat to South Korea, Japan and the
United States, which have tried to contain North Korea's growing nuclear
and missile strength, military experts said. The North's leader, Kim
Jong Un, oversaw the test-launch from an offshore location as the
submarine dived and "a ballistic missile surfaced from the sea and
soared into the air, leaving a fiery trail of blaze," the official KCNA
news agency said.

Military raises security status at U.S. bases because of ISIS threat

Military
bases and installations in the United States have been ordered to raise
their force protection condition status to Bravo (FPCON Bravo), due to
general concerns about ISIS related threats, but not because of any
specific threat or plot. U.S. Northern Command’s Admiral William Gortney
ordered the increase in the force protection condition from FPCON Alpha
Plus, which is the standard for U.S. military bases. The Pentagon has
been on a higher force protection status than Alpha Plus for years. The
last time the force protection status was raised to the Bravo level was
on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
