SilverStone announces a sleek headphone stand
SilverStone has just announced its EBA01 - an extremely sleek Hi-Fi audio headphone stand weighing in at 1.5kg and complete with a silver or black color scheme depending on what you're after.

silverstone-announces-sleek-headphone-stand
This aluminum stand measures at 280mm high and will be released to the mainstream market very soon for $57.66.

Although it looks amazing, the EBA01 is fighting against a non-performing market of headphone stands. It has been reported by end users as hard to justify spending this kind of money on a stand-alone product (pun intended) when many monitors (think BenQ) or even cases (Thermaltake) contain headphone holders as part of their overall package.

Lenovo and Microsoft team up with Cortana and REACHit searching
Set for applications across Windows 10 PCs and tablets, Lenono has announced a partnership with Microsoft to extent Cortana's abilities through the Lenovo REACHit functionality.

lenovo-microsoft-team-up-cortana-reachit-searching
REACHit will search for content spread "across any connected Lenovo PC or tablet device running Windows 10 and many major cloud services" as pointed out in a recent press release - further assisting the search capabilities of Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant.

The release also points out that it will only search through connected Lenovo devices that you own - for example you can ask Cortana to "find the picture I edited last week on my ThinkPad X1 Carbon" and searching will commence. However, some are worried that this may open up a hacking loophole that would enable criminals to gain access to all of your devices by only hacking a single one.

Gartner: Emerging countries pushed smartphone sales 19% during Q1
Smartphone sales during Q1 topped 336 million units worldwide, a strong 19.3 percent year-over-year growth, according to the Gartner research group. The rising popularity of smartphones in emerging markets helped propel the market, including in Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa, pushing sales forward - a massive 40 percent increase in Q1.

gartner-emerging-countries-pushed-smartphone-sales-19-during-q1
"During this quarter, local brands and Chinese vendors came out as the key winners in emerging markets," said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. "These vendors recorded an average growth of 73 percent in smartphone sales and saw their combined share go up from 38 percent to 47 percent during the first quarter of 2015."

Samsung has 24 percent smartphone market share, ahead of Apple (17.9 percent), Lenovo (5.6 percent), Huawei (5.4 percent), LG Electronics (4.6), and other manufacturers. Not surprisingly, Google Android was the most dominant OS (78.9 percent), ahead of Apple iOS (17.9), Microsoft Windows (2.5 percent), BlackBerry (0.4 percent), and other mobile OSes.

Manufacturers must find ways to appeal to not just the emerging markets, but more lucrative established markets - and with device saturation a major concern, there could be a great sales and marketing effort underway in the future.

Puzzle gaming just got real, cooperate or die in Magnetic: Cage Closed
Not for those who suffer from claustrophobia, Guru Games has just released its new single player development: Magnetic: Cage Closed.

puzzle-gaming-real-cooperate-die-magnetic-cage-closed
You're a prisoner in an extremely high security detention facility and if you wish to make it out alive, you must follow the Wardens instructions as he guides you through various levels and puzzles all involving a magnetic gun that you are issued with.

You can use this 'weapon' to push or pull blocks, propel yourself in the air and more. What's even cooler is that the opposite reaction is applied to you, so unlike other games when you pull an object towards yourself, you are also pulled towards it.

Out now on Steam for $14.99 (game only) or $19.99 (collector's edition) I would suggest this for any puzzle-nut looking for something a little different.

A gamer shows us how to restart an iPhone with a text message
Thanks to a bug surrounding message pop-ups and the Arabic language, a gamer by the name of 'Sinfulz0r' has shown the world how to restart a friends phone just by text messaging them.

gamer-shows-restart-iphone-text-message
The scene is set in front of some click looking Tt eSPORTS peripherals and it is explained that there has to be a few things going your way in order for this to work. It is explained that the 'victim' phone must either be on the home or lock screen and have drop down message notifications active.

According to 'Facebook experts' (random people on the internet) what is happening here is a glitch with the way your iPhone processes the Arabic text - filling up the phone's RAM and forcing it to restart. Either way it seems to work every time he sends a message to his mother's phone.

SpaceX will be able to launch US national security payloads into orbit
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will now be able to launch satellites and other national security payload for the US government, after receiving US Air Force certification.

spacex-launch-national-security-payloads-orbit
The certification could help break a stranglehold on the United Launch Alliance, a nine-year-old space venture created by Boeing and Lockheed Martin. SpaceX is muscling its way into conducting launches for NASA and Department of Defense, so it will be interesting to see how ULA responds in the future.

"SpaceX's emergence as a viable commercial launch provider provides the opportunity to compete launch services for the first time in almost a decade," said Deborah Lee James, Air Force Secretary, in a statement. "Ultimately, leverage of the commercial space market drives down cost to the American taxpayer and improves our military's resiliency."

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk had to drag the US government into court to help get the deal done, after the Air Force automatically handed ULA a multi-billion-dollar contract.

JEDEC Announces Support for NVDIMM Hybrid Memory Modules
JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in standards development for the microelectronics industry, has announced that its JC-45 Committee has approved the first standards for support of "hybrid" DDR4 memory modules which are defined as modules that plug into standard dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets and appear like a DDR4 SDRAM to the system controller, yet contain non-volatile (NV) memories such as NAND Flash on the module. These hybrid module families are referred to as Non-Volatile DIMMs, or NVDIMMs, and they may share the memory channel with other standard DDR4 DIMMs. Publication is expected later this year.

"The introduction of hybrid memory modules into system platform architectures adds new levels of functionality to the computer memory hierarchy," said Mian Quddus, Chairman of JEDEC's JC-45 Committee for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) Modules. He added, "Non-volatile memory may be used for data persistence, mass storage, and the door is now opened for innovative new applications using the high speed of the DRAM channel. NAND Flash is the first non-volatile memory to be incorporated into the channel; however, the industry is poised for other memory types to be included as well. The framework established by JEDEC is flexible enough to allow for a variety of memories to be included under the 'hybrid' umbrella."

JEDEC's JC-45 Committee for Memory Modules developed the NVDIMM taxonomy in cooperation with the NVDIMM Special Interest Group (SIG), a subcommittee of the Solid State Storage Initiative within the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). The first two versions of these hybrid modules are the NVDIMM-N, which combines DRAM and NAND Flash where the Flash provides backup and restore of all DRAM for reliable data persistence through power failure; and the NVDIMM-F, which provides directly addressable NAND Flash which is accessed as a block oriented mass storage device.

"The NVDIMM SIG was formed to accelerate the awareness and adoption of NVDIMMs," stated Jeff Chang, Co-Chair of the SNIA NVDIMM SIG. Co-Chair Arthur Sainio added, "The synergy between JEDEC and the NVDIMM SIG on the introduction of hybrid modules is accelerating the market acceptance of exciting new system configurations looking to take advantage of persistent memory at DRAM speeds. NVDIMMs are in production now by multiple suppliers, with many new product introductions in the coming months."

Hybrid modules such as the NVDIMM-N and NVDIMM-F are supported in new DDR4 Serial Presence Detect (SPD) codes to be released later this year, and new standard DDR4 DIMM labels are in the review process for release in 2015 as well. JEDEC has also defined specific signals on the DIMM connector to facilitate plug-and-play implementation of NVDIMMs on standard platforms.

SanDisk Announces the Z400s SATA SSD for Embedded Applications
SanDisk Corporation, a global leader in flash storage solutions, today introduced the new SanDisk Z400s SSD, a cost effective solid-state drive (SSD) designed to replace hard-disk drives (HDDs) in computing platforms and embedded applications. PCs and embedded systems need consistent, reliable access to storage in order to meet business demands. The Z400s outperforms HDDs by 20x, while providing 5x the reliability with 20x lower average power consumption, all at a price point on par with HDDs. The SanDisk Z400s SSD joins the company's existing portfolio of flash-based solutions that are designed to deliver a delightful user experience and reliability at an affordable price point

sandisk-announces-z400s-sata-ssd-embedded-applications
"The Z400s represents a feat of engineering that addresses the needs of two distinct markets-PC OEM manufacturers and embedded application designers," said Rizwan Ahmed, senior director of product marketing, client platform solutions, SanDisk. "With a single architecture, SanDisk is able to provide OEMs with an affordable solution for displacing HDDs in today's cutting edge consumer devices, and help embedded application designers avoid overpaying for un-needed space-all while delivering the peak performance and high-reliability that only SSDs can supply."

An Economic Way for OEMs to Add Value and Competitive Advantage

With a variety of form factors and capacities, lightweight design and cost-effective architecture, PC OEMs can incorporate the new SanDisk Z400s into sleeker, mobile laptop designs without breaking bill of materials (BOM) costs. Additionally, because SSDs have no moving parts, they are much less prone to failure, which increases device uptime. According to published data, HDDs are three times more likely to fail than SSDs. By designing systems with the new SanDisk Z400s SSD, PC OEMs can deliver products that are 5x more reliable and 20x faster than traditional hard drives, translating into fewer returns, lower total cost of ownership and increased overall customer satisfaction.

IDC forecasts that the Intelligent Systems market will ship over two billion units in 2019 with the industrial segments growing the fastest. Digital signage, security surveillance, POS or kiosk environments are key areas where SanDisk SSDs can provide major benefits over HDDs, particularly in applications where the storage requirements are relatively short-term-meaning that data is frequently cleared from the device. Thus these applications only require low capacities, but reliability and performance levels are paramount.

Greater Reliability for Industrial Embedded Systems

Embedded industrial systems rely on storage's ability to execute one task consistently with minimal downtime. The Z400s can withstand up to 1.7 million hours of continual use, delivering greater stability during peak activity, underscoring its high-endurance design and reliability. Available in multiple form factors and capacities as low as 32GB, the new SanDisk Z400s SSD meets embedded systems applications designers' performance, reliability, size, low power, interface and scalability requirements for the following use cases:

  • Digital Signage: The rise of big data analytics is driving the use of digital signage for transportation, advertising, retailers and more. The Z400s delivers the latest advances in flash storage technology so that users and manufacturers of digital signage equipment can trust their solution will consistently provide valuable and current information to all audiences.
  • POS: Research shows that customers become frustrated after 2.5 minutes if there is no progress in a checkout line; after five minutes, one out of three customers will abandon the line altogether. The Z400s provides the performance and reliability that retail, hospitality, restaurant services, and many other industries need to ensure a quality customer experience and inspire brand loyalty.
  • Security-Surveillance: The Z400s is extremely beneficial at the point of image capture, where ruggedness, durability and performance are critical, but storage requirements are relatively short-term. This includes digital cameras where images are cleared more frequently, but still operate 24/7 in order to reduce risk, such as in courtrooms or government buildings, healthcare facilities and shopping malls.
"Intelligent Systems continue to play a critical role in disrupting traditional industries as connectivity, flash and sensor technology allows us to drive more value for applications and data," said Mario Morales, vice president of IDC's Enabling Technologies and Semiconductors research group. "The value chain for the embedded market is broad and fragmented across a large set of industries that span decades of development and commercialization. SanDisk has decades of experience in tailoring flash technology for a broad range of applications-from consumer devices to data center solutions-making them the ideal partner to help intelligent system designers solve business-specific challenges across several embedded industries."

The SanDisk Z400s is sampling with customers immediately in mSATA, 2.5" SATA and M.2 (2242 and 2280) form factors, in capacities of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
