New Windows Zero Day Being Exploited Through PowerPoint
Microsoft has posted a new security advisory (#3010060) warning of a vulnerability in Microsoft OLE that could allow remote code execution using PowerPoint.

Microsoft is aware of a vulnerability affecting all supported releases of Microsoft Windows, excluding Windows Server 2003. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Microsoft Office file that contains an OLE object. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. Customers whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights. The attack requires user interaction to succeed on Windows clients with a default configuration, as User Account Control (UAC) is enabled and a consent prompt is displayed.

A Political Party For Nerds And Geeks
As funny as this idea sounds, a political party made up of geeks and nerds would definitely be cooler than what we have now.

I propose the Geeks and Nerds United party, or GNU, which is also an awesome triple entendre for fans of both open-source software and wildebeests. It could also be pronounced "new party," since it will also be just that, a new political party.

Courts: Not So Fast With Those Red-Light Camera Tickets
Besides being an obvious revenue generator for the city and state, why do they even have red-light camera systems any more? Everywhere they are installed, this ends up happening. Thanks to railhaus for the link.

In Florida, only law enforcement officers and traffic enforcement officers have the legal authority to issue citations for traffic infractions, which means only law enforcement officers and traffic enforcement officers are entitled to determine who gets prosecuted for a red light violation.

Kickstarter Hoverboard Sounds Like A 'Banshee'
A $10,000 hoverboard that only works on a solid copper floor? I think I'll pass. But hey, if that's too rich for your blood, the company sells non-functioning replicas for just $499.

While "completely safe," it's far from silent. Where the white box sounded like a loud desktop computer, the sound coming out of the hoverboard prototype is like a high-pitched screech. This will be dampened by the time the company has a more polished version of the hoverboard ready by this time next year, Henderson promises, but for now it's a cacophony of squeals when you get on. The word "Banshee" comes to mind.

Twitter 'Source Of All Evil'
I'm not sure what this guy's point is, if you look at Twitter's "About Us" page I'm pretty sure it says "we are the source of all evil...in 140 characters or less."

Twitter is nothing more than "a source of lies" and evil, Saudi Arabia's top Muslim cleric said, in comments that sparked lively debate Tuesday on the microblogging site. Twitter is "the source of all evil and devastation", the mufti said.

Lowly DSL Poised For Gigabit Speed Boost
It looks like there is hope for all you guys stuck on DSL after all. The bad part is that you'll most likely be waiting until 2016.

That's all changing. At the Broadband World Forum in Amsterdam this week, several companies are announcing and demonstrating products that bring DSL -- or digital subscriber line -- into a future with a speed of 1 gigabit per second. That's about 1,000 times the data-transfer speed the technology offered when it arrived in the late 1990s.

RAM Soldered Into New Mac Mini To Block Memory Upgrades
Why would a company do something like this to prevent end users from upgrading the memory in....whoops, this is Apple we are talking about...never mind.

For anyone looking for a cheap way to get their hands on a Mac, it's a great starting point -- prices start at just $499. But you'd better make sure you select a model with enough RAM when you place your order -- Apple has taken steps that mean it is impossible for buyers to install more memory.

Phone Hackers Stealing Billions
While the hackers in this story are the obvious bad guys, phone companies trying to enforce these outrageous bills aren't much better.

It wasn't. Hackers had broken into the phone network of the company, Foreman Seeley Fountain Architecture, and routed $166,000 worth of calls from the firm to premium-rate telephone numbers in Gambia, Somalia and the Maldives. It would have taken 34 years for the firm to run up those charges legitimately, based on its typical phone bill, according to a complaint it filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
