IT News Head Lines (Tech Report) 09/06/2014

Friday night topic: Do you even lift, bro?
Video of Barack Obama's workout routine leaked on the Internet this week. The U.S. President apparently ducked into a hotel gym in Poland to sneak in a quick workout. He lifted free weights and ran on an elliptical machine, and his form was a little off. But I've gotta give it to the guy for finding the time. If there's anything I've learned over the years, it's that regular exercise of just about any kind can go a long way toward improving energy levels, sleep habits, and overall health. Plus, you know, the gun show.
Now, I'm probably a bit of an anomaly on this front. I started doing triathlons and lifting weights in high school, and I've done a couple of marathons, Ironmans, and 24-hour mountain bike races since. I don't really race anymore, but I still "train" religiously, mostly with a mix ...

'Maglev' keyboard to enable thinner notebooks
There's a new type of keyboard switch a-comin'. Most laptop keyboards these days use scissor switches backed by rubber cups, but as CNet News reports, a company named Darfon has replaced that mechanism with frickin' magnets.
How do they work? Simple: instead of sitting on collapsible rubber cups or domes, the keys hover magnetically. The CNet story says it's possible to ...

High-PPI display, Haswell quad collide in 13'' gaming notebook
Gaming notebooks have a reputation for being big and unwieldy, but they've slimmed down a lot in recent years. Gigabyte's new Aorus X3 series is a perfect example. Introduced at Computex, this 13-incher measures 0.9" thick and weighs a reasonable 4.12 lbs.
The X3 is claimed to be the "most powerful and lightest 13" gaming notebook" yet, and after looking at the specs, I'm not inclined to argue. This thing has a quad-core Core i7-4710HQ processor with a 3.5GHz peak Turbo speed. Nvidia provides ...

Report: AMD to outsource chipset design to ASMedia
AMD's acquisition of ATI in 2006 eventually spelled the end of third-party chipset designs. Now, according to industry sources quoted by DigiTimes, things may be about to change.
This time, the lucky outsourcee would be ASMedia—one of the subsidiaries of Asustek, Asus' parent company. Word got around last month that AMD might partner up with ASMedia on SATA Express controller design, potentially ...

Deal of the week: Radeons, memory, and Devil's Canyon
This is actually our second deals post of the week. Our first covered discounts on Crucial's new MX100 SSD, most of which have since expired. However, Newegg has the 256GB version for $104.99, which is $5 off the suggested retail price. If you don't mind waiting 2-4 weeks for the drive to ship, Amazon is selling the 256GB for $99.99 and the 512GB for $199.99. Amazon doesn't seem to have either in stock, so you'll have to browse the alternate listing to get those prices. Right now, the main Amazon page has pricier TigerDirect listings that are available to ship immediately.
Now, here are ...

New SanDisk Extreme Pro SSDs feature 10-year warranty
SanDisk has updated the top end of its SSD range with the new Extreme Pro line. The biggest change is in warranty coverage: SanDisk is backing these drives for 10 years, in what looks to be a first for a consumer SSD.
In addition to the generous warranty period, SanDisk claims improvements over the performance of the Extreme II line. Sequential write performance has increased by about 2-3% (to 515-520MB/s), ...

It looks like Intel didn't share much else in the way of details. There's nothing definite in the CNet News story about when we can expect these uber-affordable 4K ...
