Record iPhone, iPad sales bolster Apple's Q1 financial results
Apple has posted its financial results for the first quarter of 2014, and the numbers are good. The company pulled in a record $57.6 billion over the holiday quarter. Apple also set quarterly records for iPhone and iPad sales. Here's a look at how the numbers compare to those from a year ago. (The company's fiscal quarters are ahead by three months; Q1'14 ended December 28, 2013.)
Although revenue was up 6%, profits were ...

Here are over 20 minutes of Thief gameplay footage
Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough, but I just haven't seen very much Thief gameplay footage lately—at least not since last summer. Happily, a couple of new gameplay vids popped up on the PlayStation Access YouTube channel over the weekend. The videos show the PS4 version of the game, but I'd wager the PC version isn't too different.
The first clip, clocking in at about 17 minutes, shows the player sneaking into a mansion, dispatching guards, and ...

Report: Win8.1 update adds power button, smarter context menus
Microsoft's incoming update for Windows 8.1 is sounding more and more interesting. Last week, leaked screenshots suggested the update would add a close button to Metro apps and allow them to be pinned to the taskbar. Another batch of screenshots has now made its way to the web, and it points to additional changes. The screenshots show dedicated search and power buttons on the Start screen, right next to the user account icon. Hitting those buttons should be more convenient than activating the same functions through the Charms bar, which requires an extra step.
The latest leak also shows desktop-style context menus for Metro tiles. Right clicking on tiles apparently brings up a mouse-friendly menu rather than the app bar at the bottom of the screen. According to Windows guru Paul Thurrot ...

Leaked specs outline unannounced GeForce GTX 750 Ti
Right now, the GeForce GTX 700 series only reaches down to the GTX 760. Everything below that is 600-series territory. This doesn't matter very much, obviously, since both product lines are based on the same generation of silicon. Nevertheless, if we're to believe the folks at VR-Zone and PConline, Nvidia is about to add a new, lower-end model to the GTX 700 family.
Dubbed the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, this unannounced card sounds like a strange hybrid of the GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 Ti. The GPU-Z screenshot posted by PConline lists the same number of shader processors (960) and textures filtered per clock (80) as ...

Surface family still losing money for Microsoft
Microsoft doubled down on Surface tablets last September, introducing
two second-gen devices with new accessories to match. Has the new gear
proved more profitable than the old? Unfortunately for Microsoft, it
hasn't.SEC filings dug up by PC World reveal that Microsoft lost money on Surface sales during its last fiscal quarter. From October through December, Surface ...

Friday night topic: Worthwhile news sources
I've gotta admit, I'm much less engaged with world news and politics than I used to be, in large part because I have struggled to find news sources that 1) I can trust and 2) have a broad enough focus to keep me well-informed. There's more to it, but I do have the sense that the major media organizations have declined in overall quality and have become fascinated with chasing readership or viewership at the expense of everything else. This episode on MSNBC this past week is a great (and terrible) example:

Avegant VR headset funded on Kickstarter
Remember the Avegant Virtual Retinal Display we talked about in October? The VR headset hit Kickstarter a couple of days ago, and it's already blown past its $250,000 funding goal. As I write this, the crowdfunding campaign has raised almost $600,000 from over 1,200 backers. The following pitch video explains what the fuss is all about.

ASTC compression in ARM's Mali GPU cuts energy use
We've been spending more time lately talking with folks in the world of licensed IP, where the CPUs, GPUs, and other components for mobile SoCs are developed. Once you look beyond the big desktop PC chip firms like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, there's tremendous variety out there—and in some cases, innovations that move things forward for the entire industry. One such innovation recently is ARM's contribution of a new texture compression standard, dubbed ASTC for Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression, to OpenGL and OpenGL ES.
ASTC supports a broad range of color formats and bit rates, so graphics developers can manage the tradeoffs between performance and image quality in a way that fits their content. High-color formats for things like HDR are supported, and the compressed formats can go below a single bit of storage per pixel. Although ...

Qualcomm buys Palm and other mobile patents from HP
Qualcomm has picked up an extensive mobile patent portfolio from HP. The portfolio includes the Palm and webOS patents that HP acquired in 2010. It also has patents associated with HP's old iPAQ handhelds and with Bitfone, an HP subsidiary that specializes in mobile device management software.
All told, the deal comprises about 1,400 granted and pending patents in the U.S. and around 1,000 in other countries. Qualcomm's short press release doesn't reveal how much the company paid for the patents. ...
