(PR) Cray XC30 Supercomputers Added NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessors
Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. today announced the Company has broadened its support for accelerators and coprocessors, and is now selling the Cray XC30 series of supercomputers with NVIDIA Tesla K20X GPU accelerators and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. This marks the latest step in Cray's Adaptive Supercomputing vision, which is focused on delivering innovative systems that integrate diverse technologies like multi-core and many-core processing into a unified architecture.
"Our first experience with climate and materials science applications showed that replacing one of the multi-core processors in the XC30 with an NVIDIA Tesla GPU boosts application performance and disproportionally reduced energy to solution," said Thomas Schulthess, professor at ETH Zurich and director of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center, which was one of the first Cray customers to order a hybrid Cray XC30 system. "This provides necessary proof of principle in favor of hybrid compute nodes as a promising solution to the energy challenges we face in supercomputing."

Xigmatek Announces Aquila Micro-ATX Chassis
Xigmatek announced the stylish new Aquila micro-ATX chassis. Its design involves two pronounced matte-silvery beams onto which the frame is suspended, which is inclines from within, at an acute angle. The motherboard tray is oriented along the plane of the base, rather than perpendicular to it, which results in oodles of room for tall CPU coolers (up to 18 cm tall), and long graphics cards (up to 33 cm long). The motherboard tray, and a 5.25-inch drive bay make up the top compartment of the case, with valved cutouts running to the bottom compartment, which houses the PSU bay, two 3.5/2.5-inch bays, and two 2.5-inch bays.
Xigmatek Aquila's ventilation system is very flexible. With all its drive bays in place, you can install 120 mm or 140 mm front intakes, or make a few adjustments to seat a large 200 mm intake. The rear panel features room for a 140 mm exhaust. The top features room for two 140 mm fans, which can hold on to a 140 x 280 mm radiator. Front-panel connectivity includes a pair of USB 3.0 ports (standard header), and HD audio jacks. It measures 390 mm x 403 mm x 265 mm (LxHxW). Xigmatek didn't disclose pricing.

Radeon R9 290X Clock Speeds Surface, Benchmarked
Radeon R9 290X is looking increasingly good on paper. Most of its rumored specifications, and SEP pricing were reported late last week, but the ones that eluded us were clock speeds. A source that goes by the name Grant Kim, with access to a Radeon R9 290X sample, disclosed its clock speeds, and ran a few tests for us. To begin with, the GPU core is clocked at 800 MHz. There is no dynamic-overclocking feature, but the chip can lower its clocks, taking load and temperatures into account. The memory is clocked at 1125 MHz (4.50 GHz GDDR5-effective). At that speed, the chip churns out 288 GB/s of memory bandwidth, over its 512-bit wide memory interface. Those clock speeds were reported by the GPU-Z client to us, so we give it the benefit of our doubt, even if it goes against AMD's ">300 GB/s memory bandwidth" bullet-point in its presentation.
Among the tests run on the card include frame-rates and frame-latency for Aliens vs. Predators, Battlefield 3, Crysis 3, GRID 2, Tomb Raider (2013), RAGE, and TESV: Skyrim, in no-antialiasing, FXAA, and MSAA modes; at 5760 x 1080 pixels resolution. An NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN was pitted against it, running the latest WHQL driver. We must remind you that at that resolution, AMD and NVIDIA GPUs tend to behave a little differently due to the way they handle multi-display, and so it may be an apples-to-coconuts comparison. In Tomb Raider (2013), the R9 290X romps ahead of the GTX TITAN, with higher average, maximum, and minimum frame rates in most tests.
