AMD "Hawaii" Press Sample Boxes Surface
Some time in late September, the 25th to be precise, AMD is flying the press at large over to Hawaii, to unveil its "Volcanic Islands" GPU family, with its flagship part, codenamed "Hawaii." This chip is expected to succeed "Tahiti," on which AMD's top-end Radeon HD 7900 series is based. An poster on ChipHell forums leaked these pictures of a press-package of AMD's flagship Hawaii-based graphics card, which has things going both for and against its credibility.
To begin with, the picture shows an audio CD-type jewel case holding Battlefield 4. Given that the game won't launch until late-October, we find it implausible that its release DVDs will be ready a month in advance. There's also a graphic printed on the box that shows the shore of a volcanic island (where magma meets the ocean) in the background, and an AMD logo in the foreground. The thread also contains a few alleged x-ray shots from a different poster, but we're pretty sure that they're of a motherboard. Nice try.

AMD Confirms Kaveri will be Available in 2014
AMD confirmed that its next-generation socket FM2+ APUs, codenamed "Kaveri," will begin shipping in Q4-2013, and will be available "very early" in Q1-2014, in the retail (desktop component) channel. Mobile variants of the chip will be available a little later in the same quarter. NVIDIA today reported revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2014, ended July 28, 2013, of $977.2 million, up 2.4 percent from $954.7 million in the previous quarter. GAAP earnings per diluted share were $0.16, up 23.1 percent from $0.13 in the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $0.23, up 27.8 percent from $0.18 in the previous quarter.
"The GPU business continued to grow, driving our fourth consecutive quarter of record margins," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of NVIDIA. MSI rolled out its GP60 Gaming Series mid-range gaming notebook. It features the same styling as the rest of the Gaming Series, black with a dash of red. Its 15.6-inch screen comes in two variants, 1366 x 768 and 1920 x 1080 (options). A gaming-grade keyboard by SteelSeries decks up the bottom-half. On the left-hand side you'll find gold-plated headset jacks, with an audio device tuned for gaming headsets, and a pair of USB 3.0 ports; next to an air-vent. On the right-hand side, you get the gigabit Ethernet jack, D-Sub (VGA) and HDMI 1.4a connectors, next to a tray-loading optical drive, which can be either Blu-ray + DVDRW combo, or simply DVDRW. ROCCAT Studios, the Hamburg-based manufacturer of competition gaming peripherals, is attending GDC Europe for the first time this year. The company, well known for innovative and feature-rich gaming gear such as the Kone mouse series and the Ryos mechanical keyboard series, is developing its own software: ROCCAT Power-Grid. The Power-Grid app, which runs on iOS and Android devices, connects via WiFi to the Power-Grid host software installed on the user's PC. This setup turns the user's smartphone into a fully-customizable remote control for the PC, as well as a second screen for compatible games and applications.
ROCCAT is showing the latest version of the software at GDC Europe in Cologne, giving game developers the chance to take an in-depth look at its features and to evaluate the potential for building games with Power-Grid compatibility. Radeon HD 7990 "Malta" Prices Slashed to $699, Targets GTX 780
In a bid to step up competitiveness of its Radeon HD 7990 "Malta" dual-GPU graphics card against NVIDIA's GeForce GTX TITAN and GTX 690, AMD add-in-board (AIB) partners slashed prices of the card by almost a third. What was once retailing for $1,100-1,200, is now down to $699.99. Prices of the card on American retailer Newegg.com, are ranging between $699.99 to $789.99, with two AIBs capturing the $729.99 and $749.99 price points, along the way. With the right kind of CrossFire profiles, a Radeon HD 7990 can offer frame-rates rivaled only by GTX Titan and GTX 690. New AMD GPU Family Codenames "Volcanic Islands" and "Pirate Islands"
AMD's next generation GPU family that leverages upcoming silicon fab technologies to increase transistor counts, while maintaining or lowering thermal envelopes, is codenamed "Volcanic Islands," and we've known about that for some time now.
The centerpiece of "Volcanic Islands" family is "Hawaii," a high-end GPU that makes up top single- and dual-GPU SKUs; followed by "Maui" and "Tonga." Not much is known about these two. A dual-GPU product with two "Hawaii" chips is confusingly codenamed "New Zealand," which is already used to designate certain Radeon HD 7990 graphics cards. AMD is expected to debut its first "Volcanic Islands" GPUs in Q4-2013, when foundry partner TSMC's swanky new 20 nm node is expected to take flight.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge Refresh Gets AMD Kabini Inside
According to a couple of new listings in Austria and Germany, Lenovo is preparing to launch a refresh of the ThinkPad Edge. This time round, the internals will pack AMD hardware. More specifically, the CPU will be based on AMD's Jaguar architecture, part of the company's Kabini platform. The listing reveals a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E145 powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core E1-2500 AMD APU, which is a 15W TDP part and packs AMD's Radeon HD 8240 IGP (128 compute units) clocked at 400MHz. You get a 11.6" 1366 x 768 display, 4 GB of RAM and 500 gigs of storage. The display is said to have a matte finish, doing away with any glare issues whatsoever. Connectivity is covered by two USB 3.0 ports, WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.0. There's no info regarding weight, battery rating or expected battery life yet. We do know the expected final price, to lie between the range of ?460 to ?505 as per retailer listings. According to the report, stocks will land in a couple of weeks.
