Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa says Edward Snowden's fate is in the hands of Russia
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Sunday that the fate of former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden is in the hands of the authorities in Russia. Correa said his government cannot begin considering asylum for Snowden, wanted by Washington for leaking confidential information about a surveillance program, until he reaches Ecuador or an Ecuadorean embassy.
ecuadorian_president_rafael_correa_says_edward_snowden_s_fate_is_in_the_hands_of_russia
The 30-year-old former NSA contractor has not been able to leave Moscow's international airport. "It's up to the Russian authorities if he can leave the Moscow airport for an Ecuadorean embassy," Correa said in an interview with Reuters in the coastal city of Portoviejo. "He will be treated just like any other citizen even though he does not have a passport. We are clear that this is a special situation."
Correa's comments provide further confirmation Ecuador is unlikely to help Snowden escape his current limbo. His passport has been revoked and countries around the world are under pressure not to let him continue his journey. Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected U.S. calls to expel Snowden to the United States and says Snowden should choose a destination and leave the Moscow airport as soon as possible.

A presidential spokesman said the issue was not on Putin's agenda and suggested it was being handled by Russia's domestic intelligence agency. The asylum request has helped Correa boost his profile within the region and could help him take on the mantle of late Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who for more than a decade was Latin America's loudest critic of Washington. "This may be the largest espionage case in this history of humanity," Correa said.

Correa, who has repeatedly confronted the United States since first being elected in 2006, said on Saturday he had a "cordial" phone conversation with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who asked that Ecuador not grant Snowden asylum. Correa added that he would take into account the opinion of the U.S. government when making the decision. On Sunday he sent his regards to Snowden, whom he has thanked for revealing information about espionage efforts by the United States that go beyond its own borders. "Keep your spirits up and be brave," Correa said. "You have to know how to assume your responsibilities, but if you acted in good conscience then you can be at peace with yourself."

The fallout over U.S. spying operations, the revelation of which has been a major embarrassment for U.S. President Barack Obama, appeared to expand on Sunday as the European Union confronted Washington on reports of spying by the National Security Agency. Ecuador said on Thursday it was pulling out of a U.S. trade benefits program in protest of pressure from the United States for having considered Snowden's asylum request. "Ecuador will not be pressured or blackmailed by anyone," Correa said.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange - granted asylum last year in Ecuador's London embassy - has not lost the country's support despite apparently contributing to confusion over a travel document Ecuador's government issued to Snowden, Correa said. "In these crises when there is need to respond with urgency, it's also possible to make mistakes. But Mr. Assange continues to enjoy our support, respect and appreciation," he said.
Ecuador's London consulate issued Snowden an unauthorized safe-passage document, potentially as a result of communication with Assange, Correa said on Saturday. Assange had said that Snowden received refugee papers from the Ecuadorean government to secure safe passage as he fled Hong Kong for Russia, which Correa's government had originally denied. Correa's critics have in recent days accused him of letting Assange take charge of crucial foreign policy matters.

Microsoft loses the SkyDrive trademark to BSkyB in Europe
Jumping over to the UK for this piece, where Microsoft have lost a trademark case over their branding for cloud storage service SkyDrive. The ruling, which covers both the UK and EU, stated that Microsoft infringed on British Sky Broadcasting's trademark of the Sky brand with SkyDrive.
microsoft_loses_the_skydrive_trademark_to_bskyb_in_europe
The ruling saw that it is possible for consumers to confuse the two brands, somehow. Sky, from BSkyB, offers their satellite broadcasting service, mobile apps and streaming to customers, and previously a cloud storage product but it fell under the name of Sky Store & Share. Microsoft have of course thrown in a counterclaim to invalidate four Sky trademarks "on the grounds of descriptiveness for cloud storage services."

Oculus Rift sees support for Surgeon Simulator, become your own McDreamy
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Oculus' VR headset, Rift, is probably my most anticipated product of the year and I really think it could change everything when it's released.

Surgeon Simulator has a new build, which is compatible with Oculus Rift. It gives players control over the hand and arm only, with the field of view directly in the Rift headset, so you have a perfect point of view. This gives you the look (with VR) and feel (hand and arm) of a real surgeon. Bossa Studios announced both Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra support for Surgeon Simulator earlier this month.

WikiLeaks' founder hails NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden a hero, declares that the his revelations will continue
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Sunday that the revelations of NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden will continue. Mr. Assange said on the ABC News program "This Week:" "Look, there is no stopping the publishing process at this stage. Great care has been taken to make sure that Mr. Snowden can't be pressured by any state to stop the publication process."
wikileaks_founder_hails_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden_a_hero_declares_that_the_his_revelations_will_continue
The fallout from Mr. Snowden's revelations widened this weekend as the German magazine Der Spiegel reported that the United States had eavesdropped on European Union offices in Washington, Brussels and at the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Assange, speaking from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London where he has been ensconced for more than a year after being granted asylum, praised Mr. Snowden's actions and compared his plight with his own. He said Mr. Snowden was likely to be indicted by a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, that Mr. Assange said was "made up of the C.I.A., Pentagon. He is a hero," Mr. Assange said of Mr. Snowden. "He has told the people of the world and the United States that there is mass unlawful interception of their communications, far beyond anything that happened under Nixon."
wikileaks_founder_hails_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden_a_hero_declares_that_the_his_revelations_will_continue
WikiLeaks played no role in Mr. Snowden's disclosures, but since joining forces with him, the organization has used his case to raise its own profile again. By Mr. Assange's account, WikiLeaks helped obtain and deliver a special refugee travel document to Mr. Snowden in Hong Kong that, with his American passport revoked, may be important if the he is allowed to leave Moscow. A British WikiLeaks activist, Sarah Harrison, accompanied Mr. Snowden on the Aeroflot airliner that carried him from Hong Kong to Moscow. Mr. Snowden has sought asylum in Ecuador, but that country's president, Rafael Correa, has said that any travel document given to Mr. Snowden was "not authorized."
Asked about Mr. Snowden's current status in Moscow, Mr. Assange said that the situation was "a very sensitive one," adding, "It's a matter of international diplomatic negotiations, so there's little that I can productively say about what is happening directly." Mr. Assange added that Mr. Snowden should be free to seek asylum where he can because his actions are political, not criminal, despite the espionage charges the United States has brought against him.
"He has acted in a manner to draw attention to a very serious problem in the United States, where, without the will of Congress, without the will of the American population, we now have a state within a state, we have the transnational surveillance apparatus," Mr. Assange said. "Ideally he should be able to return to the United States," he added. "Unfortunately, that's not the world that we live in, and hopefully another country will give him the justice that he deserves."
wikileaks_founder_hails_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden_a_hero_declares_that_the_his_revelations_will_continue
Mr. Assange seemed to suggest that by cancelling Mr. Snowden's passport, leaving him "for the moment marooned in Russia," the United States had inadvertently handed the Russian spy services a potential bonanza if they exploited, as expected, the hard drives on the four laptops Mr. Snowden is believed to be carrying. "Is that really a great outcome by the State Department?" Mr. Assange said.
Asked about the fears expressed by senior American officials - including Secretary of State John Kerry - that the N.S.A. revelations could jeopardize the lives of unnamed individuals and allow terrorists to alter their means of communication to avoid detection, Mr. Assange was dismissive. "I myself was subject to precisely this rhetoric two, three years ago, and it all proved to be false," he said. "No one from any government says that any of our revelations in the past six years has caused anyone to come to physical harm."
wikileaks_founder_hails_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden_a_hero_declares_that_the_his_revelations_will_continue
That assertion may be true, government officials and human rights advocates say, but they also noted that it's uncertain whether some individuals identified directly or obliquely by the release of the WikiLeaks military and diplomatic documents in 2010 may have suffered some harm without public attention. "I can't imagine a government anywhere on the planet who now believes we can keep a secret," Michael V. Hayden, a former director of the N.S.A. and C.I.A., said on the CBS News program "Face the Nation."
In sometimes testy exchanges with George Stephanopoulos, the host of "This Week," Mr. Assange found himself on the defensive in trying to explain Ecuador's human rights record and to counter accusations that WikiLeaks was manipulating Mr. Snowden. The whistle-blower's father told NBC News this week that in a letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., he said his son might agree to return to the United States to stand trial on espionage charges if certain conditions were met.
wikileaks_founder_hails_nsa_whistleblower_edward_snowden_a_hero_declares_that_the_his_revelations_will_continue
Lonnie Snowden, who said he had not spoken with his son since April, said that he was "concerned about those who surround him," specifically advisers from WikiLeaks. "I think WikiLeaks, if you've looked at past history, their focus isn't necessarily the Constitution of the United States," Mr. Snowden said. "It's simply to release as much information as possible." Mr. Assange said on Sunday that he sympathized with the elder Mr. Snowden. "As a parent, of course he is worried in this situation" Assange said, and added that WikiLeaks had contacted Lonnie Snowden's lawyer "to put some of his concerns to rest."

iPhone 5 makes up 75% of all 4G web traffic in the US
Just how popular is the iPhone 5 for 4G LTE web browsing? Does the word 'dominating' come to mind? Because it should, according to Comscore's latest study of US marketshare, with ad network Chitika reporting that when looking at just the "4G"-capable part of the market, the iPhone 5 completely dominates it.
iphone_5_makes_up_75_of_all_4g_internet_traffic_in_the_us
When concentrating on just 4G-capable smartphones released after July 2012, the iPhone 5 by itself takes up 75% of US 4G web traffic. When mixing in all still-active 4G/LTE smartphones, it still takes a huge chunk: 40%. Considering the iPhone 5 is the only 4G-capable iPhone on the market, this is a huge win for Apple.

Photos of the lower-cost iPhone's plastic rear shell arrive online
The iPhone is big enough that even a small nugget of news like this is worth posting, but Nowwhereelse.fr have a bunch of photos that are reportedly of the plastic rear shell of the lower-cost iPhone that we're expecting later this year.

photos_of_the_lower_cost_iphone_s_plastic_rear_shell_arrive_online
We should expect a lower-cost iPhone this year to combat against the slew of other smartphones that are competing against Apple at better prices, like the $299 Nexus 4. You can see from the picture above, that we could expect three colors: yellow, a pinkish red, and green. They look bright, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say this could appeal to the younger generation, who have less money but still want an iPhone.

In iOS 7 beta 2, Apple started support for the iPad, so we should expect beta 3 to open up to the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and hopefully, the Apple TV. There should be more refinements made in the next beta, where it is shaping up nicely so far.

Francisco, the world's fastest ship, is powered by modified jet engines
Incat, an Australian shipyard, have built what they're calling the world's fastest ship called the Francisco, which is capable of travelling at up to 58 knots, or 67 miles per hour.
francisco_the_world_s_fastest_ship_is_powered_by_modified_jet_engines
How did they achieve this speed? They used two modified jet engines, which power a pair of water jets and makes the Francisco a "high-speed dual-fuel vehicle and passenger ferry". Kim Clifford, Incat Managing Director, said in a statement: "This is certainly the fastest ship in the world. Of course there's a few speed boats that could surpass 58 knots, but nothing that could carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars, and with an enormous duty-free shop on board."

Samsung dominates the iPhone when it comes to phone subsidies
Samsung have done quite well for themselves over the last couple of years, fighting against the near-invincible iPhone. How does it compare to Apple in regards to phone subsidies, something Apple usually have the most control over?
samsung_dominates_the_iphone_when_it_comes_to_phone_subsidies
Samsung are actually out and ahead, according to market research firm ABI Research and their latest report. They've said that the average implied carrier subsidy for a Samsung smartphone in the US is around 84%. What this means is that phone carriers cover 84% of the up-front costs of a Samsung phone when a consumer buys one on a contract.
The carrier then makes the money back on the two-year contract you've just signed through various fees and monthly charges. HTC see a subsidy of around 80%, with the iPhone sitting at 74%. ABI analyst, Stuart Carlaw, says: "Samsung continues to squeeze its competitors at every turn. The Samsung [Galaxy S4] is now considered on a par with Apple's iPhone 5. Coupled with better subsidy, the breadth of its device portfolio, increasingly savvy marketing, and its excellence in channel execution, it is little wonder Samsung is dominating the mobile handset market from top to bottom."

DirectX 11.2 to be exclusive to the Xbox One and Windows 8.1, confirmed by Microsoft
Well, DirectX 11.2 is coming folks, and it will be exclusive to Windows 8.1 and Xbox One. Microsoft have confirmed the news, with the new iteration of Microsoft's software including tiles resources, which will allow developers to cram more detail into our games, and much more.
directx_11_2_to_be_exclusive_to_the_xbox_one_and_windows_8_1_confirmed_by_microsoft
DirectX 11.2 is built to use both system RAM and graphics RAM to store textures, with Microsoft's Antoine Leblond saying that the tiled resources will see DirectX 11.2-based games have much better resolution of textures displayed in-game. Leblond used a live example, showing off a demo that used 9GB of texture data that was held in system RAM compared to graphics RAM.
This is great for PC gamers, but it also means gamers will be looking at a new OS once again. Microsoft are doing it strangely, too, as they won't be offering DirectX 11.2 to Windows 8 - so it looks like Windows 8 is done and dusted for if you're a gamer. Glad I haven't made the switch yet.

Guardian journalist who broke the NSA whistleblower story says the NSA can store one billion cell phone calls each day
It continues to get worse for the NSA, with Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald saying he has another big scoop about the National Security Agency (NSA) and their PRISM program.

Greenwald, when speaking over Skype to the Socialism Conference in Chicago, claimed that the NSA has the ability to record, and store one billion phone calls each day. Greenwald was the one to write about NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden, and the crazy but very real PRISM program. He says: "It talks about a brand new technology that enables the national security agency to redirect into its own repositories one billion cell phone calls every single day. One billion cell phone calls every single day."
He continued with:
But what we're really talking about here is a localized system that prevents any form of electronic communication from taking place without its being stored and monitored by the National Security Agency. It doesn't mean that they're listening to every call, it means they're storing every call and have the capability to listen to them at any time, and it does mean that they're collecting millions upon millions upon millions of our phone and email records.

Thermaltake Chaser A71 Full Tower Chassis Review

Introduction

thermaltake_chaser_a71_full_tower_chassis_review
Not all that long ago we got to see the new mid-tower that Thermaltake added to the Chaser series, with the A41. While not all of the features of the A41 have made it to the larger design, the majority of the styling, layout, and overall theme have stayed much the same. Two features I saw right from the jump that were removed from the latest design were the headphone hanger bolted to the door, and the large "duck feet" style of footing that was used in the A41. The last, and likely the most important change to this new design is that we have now moved from the mid-tower design of the Chaser A41 into a full-tower design this time.
When you glance on site for this newer chassis, there are eight things that are covered in the features. First is the size moving to full-tower so that expandability is no longer an issue. There is the E-Sport design of steel mesh, light blue coloration of parts, and a large windowed side panel. They also go on to cover the HDD dock and the supreme ventilation, and tool-free support inside and outside of the chassis. They then go on to cover the fact that this is a water cooling supported chassis and offers stress free cable management so that users can hide almost everything behind the motherboard tray and still have plenty of tie down options. While at first this does seem to be a list that any chassis maker would display, but it is in the way that these points are incorporated that I think is what will grab your attention.
The latest addition to the Chaser lineup is the new Chaser A71 that we will be looking at and testing today from Thermaltake. Since I covered what it has to offer buyers, what is missing from the A41 design, and what got added specifically to the A71 and was not found on the A41, all I can say now is that I can see this being a chassis a lot of potential buyers may enjoy.
So, why don't we just get to it and jump to the specifications so that I can get into the images and show you why I think the Chaser A71 from Thermaltake will be widely successful.
