RumorTT: Samsung working on fingerprint scanning technology?
According to SamMobile who got their hands on a leaked firmware for the Galaxy S3, Samsung is working on some sort of fingerprint scanning technology. SamMobile draws this conclusion because of some specific image files found inside the firmware. While it does suggest that some sort of fingerprint technology may be on its way, it doesn't say exactly what it will be used for or how.

It's time for a bit of speculation: what do you think the images above indicate? What is Samsung working on? Let us know in the comments!

Another day, another Apple rumor. This latest rumor says that the upcoming iPad will be around 33 percent lighter and also thinner thanks to new touchscreen technology. The latest rumor comes courtesy of Digitimes who cites upstream supply chain insiders. Trial production is said to start in July.

This will reportedly slim the iPad by around two-tenths of a millimeter, a rather small amount. The bezel is also reportedly slimmer than previous models. As with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt.

Xbox One will not feature support for Xbox 360 games, will play original Xbox games through emulation
Bad news for those who have a large Xbox 360 game library: the new Xbox One will not feature backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games. According to Xbox Live VP Marc Whitten, there will be zero backwards compatibility, mostly due to the fact that the architectures are completely different.

No, there's not. The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective. Not only will Xbox 360 discs not work, any Xbox Live Arcade game built for the Xbox 360 will need to be rebuilt to support the new platform. However, the Xbox One will support many titles from the original Xbox through emulation. Furthermore, Microsoft has no plans of discontinuing the Xbox 360 meaning you'll be able to buy a new one should yours break for the foreseeable future.

ScienceTT: NASA looking to bring Star Trek replicator to life, funding 3D printer capable of printing food
"Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" It's the classic line from TV's Star Trek: The Next Generation, where Captain Picard walks up to the Replicator in his living quarters and orders a cup of tea. While some have likened that scene with the consumer level 3D printers of today, we are still unable to replicate food from thin air. NASA is looking to change that.

The idea behind the project is to take a RepRap Mendel 3D printer and convert the extrusion head to print a mixture of "nutrients" that will form the basis of the food product you wish to eat. Contractor says the nutrient cartridges will have a lifespan of 30 years, making them stable enough for space travel. The project will begin with a proof of concept test where he will print chocolate and the plan is to ramp up from there.

RumorTT: Samsung could shift to Intel processors for the Galaxy Tab 3
Samsung are reportedly working on a new Galaxy Tab tablet, which could actually be more interesting than previously thought. We've heard previously that the Galaxy Tab 3 would feature a 10.1-inch 1280x800-pixel display, rocking a 1.5GHz dual-core processor inside.

Up until now, Samsung have used ARM-based processors in their smart devices, so this would be a gigantic change if Intel were to tap some of that sweet Intel silicon for their upcoming products.

Apple escaped $44 billion in taxes according to Senate investigators
Apple are in the news once more, with Senate investigators accusing the iPhone maker of piecing together a complicated system to hide billions of dollars in international profits from both US and foreign tax collectors.

Apple conducts most of their international business in the European country in order to use the lower tax rates, according to the congressional report. The Senate have said that Apple's tax conduct isn't exactly legal, but they aren't looking at the situation with compassion, pressing against Apple for their tax avoiding tactics.
Apple has hit back saying that they have contributed more than their fair share of jobs to the United States economy, as well as pumping money into the US treasury. Apple's prepared testimony states that Apple "pays all its required taxes, both in this country and abroad" and that they do not use "tax gimmicks".

HP Envy TouchSmart 4 Touchscreen Ultrabook Laptop Review
Introduction

Is HP's Envy branding all that it is cracked up to be? Or is the Envy TouchSmart 4 not worth our attention? During our testing, you'll want to pay attention to some of ASUS' budget offering as they will be most in line in terms of comparison.
Without further ado, let's dive in and see if the Envy is worth our envy.
Specifications, Configurations and Pricing

Coupled with the 3317U is 4GB of DDR3 RAM. 4GB of RAM follows my general rule-of-thumb of 1GB per thread available. Graphics are provided via Intel's somewhat capable HD4000 integrated graphics processor, which is the de facto Ultrabook graphics processor.
The screen is a rather low-resolution, touch-enabled panel. Cranking out 1366x768, the display comes in at 14 inches, making the low resolution more bearable. It's certainly more touch-friendly than the smaller 1080p Ultrabooks we previously tested.
Storage is provided by a spinning 500GB hard drive, meaning boot times and program loading will be affected versus systems installed with a faster SSD drive. On the converse, however, users have more storage available to them to hold media. Windows 8 64-bit is loaded onto the HDD as Windows 8 provides the best touchscreen compatibilities.
Packaging
The packaging has seen more than its fair share of shipping journeys to other reviewers and was beat up beyond recognition. For that reason, pictures of the packaging will not be included.... Read the rest in your browser!

Lexar Professional 128GB Compact Flash Memory Card Review

The product we will be looking over today falls into the Compact Flash category, labelled the Lexar Professional. This drive with its speed demon rating of 1000x carries specifications that allow a minimum sustained read speed of 150MB/s utilizing the CFA 6.0 UDMA7 spec, and is said to support 1080p Full HD video as well as 3D video from today's high-end DSLR cameras.

To test Compact Flash cards we utilize the same benchmarks we use for Flash Drives. These include CrystalDiskMark, ATTO and DiskBench. The card reader utilized in these test is the SanDisk ImageMate AIO.

The Lexar Professional Compact Flash is as visibly appealing as a card can get. The gold touches would, in my mind, catch your eye in the store, enough to at least get you to pick it up off the shelf and take a closer look. This is where you would read the marketing Lexar has strategically placed on the packaging, more specifically its UDMA7 capability and 1000X speed rating.
With so many brands of cards on the market, it is certainly difficult for manufacturers to differentiate themselves. Lexar has done a great job with this, first marketing there card properly and then living up to the performance specifications. As we seen in our testing the Professional did quite well in our real-world testing, and even the synthetics to be honest. One thing that I would point out is the 150MB/s is marketed as sustained read speed and not write speed. So you won't necessarily see anything more than the 100MB/s we reached in ATTO using this card in your camera, and that's if your camera is one of the more modern DSLRs that support UDMA7.
Pricing of the Lexar Professional Compact Flash in the 128GB capacity we received is $659.99 at the time of writing. Lexar covers this and all there compact flash products with a limited lifetime warranty.

HGST Launches The Highest Capacity Hard Drive For The Mainstream Mobile Market
LONDON, 21 May 2013 - HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company, NASDAQ: WDC) continues to push technology innovation by offering the highest storage density (MB/mm3) of any hard disk drive (HDD) today. The new Travelstar 5K1500 is the industry's first 9.5mm, 1.5TB mobile hard drive and features the industry's highest capacity in a standard 9.5mm design. Built on HGST's proven platform for quality and reliability, the Travelstar 5K1500 delivers high shock protection, low power and solid performance to meet the growing demands for a variety of market segments, including notebooks, external hard drives, gaming consoles and all-in-one desktop PCs.

Smaller than current 15mm or 12.5mm 2.5-inch HDDs, the Travelstar 5K1500 drive features a standard 9.5mm form factor for simple integration into many traditional system designs. This allows OEMs and system integrators to take advantage of its huge capacity, 0.5 watt low power idle and 5,400RPM performance to deliver new high-capacity, power-efficient systems for longer battery life in notebooks and other unplugged applications. With only 2.5 bels idle, the 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 drive is also whisper quiet. The new Travelstar 5K1500 family offers the best operating shock at 400G/2ms and non-operating shock at 1000G/1ms to protect against bumps and rough handling in mobile environments. A dual stage actuator is included for track miss registration improvements for greater data integrity and reliability. All Travelstar drives use halogen-free components to support the "green" computing initiatives that are of increasing importance to today's end users.
"Contrary to popular belief, the mobile hard drive market is not being replaced by SSDs. We continue to invest in and serve both the traditional 9.5mm and 7mm thin and light HDD mobile markets as they offer the best cost-per-GB, performance and proven product reliability for high-capacity, mainstream, Ultrabook and A/V content creation notebook markets," said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at HGST. "HGST continues to have a strong share in the 2.5-inch market and the new Travelstar 5K1500 hard drive is the latest addition to our broad line of 5,400 and 7,200 RPM 2.5-inch drives, giving OEMs, ODMs and integrators an opportunity to grow and differentiate their product lines."
"The PC continues to be an important productivity platform for content creators, who represent an echelon of users that value high-capacity portable storage," said John Rydning, research vice president for hard disk drives at IDC. "HGST's new mobile 1.5TB hard disk drive in a standard form factor for notebook PCs provides the highest capacity solution available today for users seeking more storage capacity inside their notebook PC."
The new 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 is also available in an Enhanced Availability (EA) model, which brings together a host of features such as high capacity, durability and low power for blade servers, network routers, video surveillance and other systems needing 24x7 access to data. The Travelstar 5K1500 drive helps system designers, integrators and IT managers build and maintain their storage systems, achieving greater storage density in the same 2.5-inch footprint, while maximising performance, and improving data integrity in "always-on" applications in lower-transaction environments.
Availability
Travelstar 5K1500 drives are expected to ship in June. The EA model, and the optional self-encrypting Travelstar 5K1500 model, which is designed to meet the Trusted Computer Group (TCG) Opal Storage Security specification, are expected to be available in 3Q 2013.
