Friday night topic: Whatcha playin'?
I'm hauling out a classic topic this evening, since the time seems very appropriate. The latest wave of games has left us with a wealth of options from which to choose. As usual, I've sampled most of the big releases already, to get a feel for them. Some of them I'll finish, and others... well, there's only so much time in the day.
I've already given you my take on the incredible visuals in Crysis 3 ; it's a much better game than the last one in the series, with vast open ...

Deal of the week: Cheap graphics and IPS displays This week's deal post is all about eye candy. For starters, EVGA's "superclocked" version of the GeForce GTX 660 2GB is still available for only $189.99 shipped —or $179.99 after a $10 mail-in rebate—at Newegg. That makes it easily the cheapest ... Read more... Read More ...

Rumor: Limited-edition AMD FX processor to reach 5GHz Since October, AMD's top-of-the-line desktop processor has been the FX-8350. Based on Vishera silicon, this chip boasts eight Piledriver cores clocked at 4GHz with a 4.2GHz Turbo peak. The FX-8350 may soon give up its flagship status, but not to the sort of successor one might expect. The guys at Hexus say they "have it on good authority" that AMD is readying a faster, Vishera-derived model that can run at 5GHz. Codenamed Centurion, this new addition "is guaranteed to run at 5GHz," according to the site. While guarantees are pretty emphatic, it's unclear whether the quoted frequency refers to the base clock, the Turbo peak, ... Read more... Read More ...
Cupertino funk, part I: O Captain, where art thou? On October 5, 2011, the vultures returned to One Infinite Loop. Having once taken up what seemed like permanent residence in Cupertino during the Sculley years, their numbers dwindled a bit with the 1998 release of the iMac, dropped further in number with the 2001 introduction of the iPod, and went on complete sabbatical when the iPhone landed in 2007. In roughly a decade, Apple had gone from being the quaint little company with 5% market share to buying The Lonely Mountain so Smaug could guard its hoard of cash. Then Steve Jobs—Apple's co-founder, prodigal son, savior and carnival barker—died. Surely, many assumed, the loss of Jobs would be the catalyst for Apple's journey from arbiter of technology and design to just another member of the gadget-proffering herd. Never mind that Jobs supposedly left behind an ... Read more... Read More ...
OCZ prepping Barefoot-based SSD with 20-nm NAND Late last year, OCZ introduced its first solid-state drive with controller technology developed entirely in-house. The Vector SSD combines an Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller with 25-nm MLC NAND, and it has higher overall performance than any drive we've tested to date. Now, it appears the firm is prepping a new Barefoot-based drive that will employ next-generation NAND. OCZ confirmed to TechSpot that it's working on a new SSD that will use "an updated version of the Barefoot 3 controller alongside 20-nanometer NAND flash." This won't be the company's first SSD with 20-nm NAND; OCZ announced the Vertex 3.20 in February , and that drive has been selling online for some time. ... Read more... Read More ...
New Samsung ultrabook is 0.51'' thick, costs $1400 Have $1,399.99 burning a hole in your pocket? Antichamber just blew my mind I didn't know a whole lot about Antichamber when I started playing. That ignorance was intentional; after first laying eyes on last year's teaser trailer for the indie puzzle game, I decided it would be best to steer clear of reviews and other promotional materials. Some things are best experienced untainted by preconceived notions, and this looked like one of them. Besides, the teaser revealed that Antichamber had already won all kinds of awards on ... Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon joining AMD's Radeon bundles When Ubisoft unveiled Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon on April 1, we didn't think the game would turn out to be a real project. And the last thing we expected was that Blood Dragon would later be bundled with AMD's Radeon graphics cards. That's precisely what has happened ... Read more... Read More ...
WSJ: Microsoft working on 7-inch Surface tablet Earlier this month, we learned that Microsoft had lowered the minimum resolution requirement for Windows 8 tablets from 1366x768 to 1024x768. The move caused speculation that Microsoft was looking to facilitate smaller tablets in the 7-8" range, and that appears to be the case. The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the next generation of Microsoft's own Surface devices will include a 7" variant. A smaller Surface wasn't part of Microsoft's plans last year, say the WSJ's sources, but execs felt like they needed a response to the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini. Smaller tablets certainly appear to be a hit with consumers. The latest figures from IDC suggest that over half of all tablets shipped in the first quarter of this year had screen ... Read more...
