AMD sheds light on Kaveri's uniform memory architecture
At the Fusion Developer Summit last June, AMD CTO Mark Papermaster teased Kaveri, AMD's next-generation APU due later this year. Among other things, Papermaster revealed that Kaveri will be based on the Steamroller architecture and that it will be the first AMD APU with fully shared memory.
Last week, AMD shed some more light on Kaveri's uniform memory architecture, which ...

Watch Dogs hitting PCs, consoles on November 19
We've seen Watch Dogs in trailers and teasers for months. Now, finally, we know when it's coming out. A Ubisoft press release quoted by Joystiq says the game will hit stores in North America on November 19. Europeans will have to wait a few more days, until November 22.
According to Ubisoft, the game will be out on launch day for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. A PlayStation 4 release is also mentioned, but based on the odd and somewhat grammatically shaky wording of the ...

Report: Samsung prepping 11-inch Nexus, Galaxy tablets
Modern tablets come in all shapes and sizes, and even more variety may be on the way. SamMobile has published purported details on several upcoming Samsung slates, including two models with 11" screen. One of those will be the Nexus 11, which is being built in cooperation with Google and should run a stock version of the company's Android OS. That machine will apparently feature an 11" Super PLS panel paired with Samsung's octa-core Exynos 5410 processor. There's no word on the pixel density of the display, but we can probably expect a resolution of at least 2560x1600. The existing Nexus 10 has a 2560x1600 display, and the Chromebook Pixel boasts a slightly higher 2560x1700 resolution with an unusual 3:2 aspect ratio.
SamMobile doesn't name its source, but the site claims the Nexus 11 will be joined by the Galaxy Tab 11. The Galaxy-branded tablet will supposedly share the same screen technology but sport a less exotic dual-core Exynos 5250 SoC. A microSD slot is ...

Report: Next-gen Chromebooks on the way
Despite their bargain-basement prices, Chromebooks just don't seem to be that popular. Web tracking firm NetMarketShare says the Chrome OS-powered machines make up a miniscule portion of web traffic—just 0.023% for the second week of April. To put that figure into perspective, Windows 8's share of surfing traffic was 142 times higher. And no one is supposed to like Win8.
Even with Chrome OS's share of web traffic barely registering on the radar, notebook makers are apparently planning a new wave of systems for the second half of the year. DigiTimes' sources in the supply chain claim that Acer, Asus, HP, and Samsung all have new ...

Report: Not all PSUs support Haswell's low-power states
So you heard the news: Intel's Haswell processors, known officially as 4th Generation Core, are coming out on June 3. Users hoping to upgrade will have to set aside some cash for a new processor, a compatible motherboard... and perhaps a new power supply, as well.
Indeed, according to the guys at VR-Zone , Haswell may not play nice with some existing "bargain basement" PSUs. That's because the chip's C6/C7 power states apparently require a minimum load of 0.05 amps on the 12V2 rail. The site says not all PSUs have the appropriate circuitry to let ...

AMD's Radeon HD 7990 graphics card reviewed
Well, this is quite the turn of events. We recently started using some new GPU testing tools from Nvidia that measure precisely when frames are being delivered to the display, and in the process, we found that Radeon-based multi-GPU solutions have some troubling problems. As I said in that article, our next task is to address the issue of multi-GPU microstuttering in more depth. Just as we published that article, we learned of AMD's plans to introduce a killer new multi-GPU graphics product: the Radeon HD 7990.
So I guess our work ...

PS4 architect discusses console's custom AMD processor
Since February, we've known that Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 console will have a "supercharged PC architecture" based on a custom AMD processor with GCN-derived graphics and eight Jaguar CPU cores. The chip's GPU and CPU elements will share 8GB of GDDR5 memory over an interface with a claimed 176GB/s of bandwidth, and the graphics component promises comparable horsepower to the Radeon HD 7850. Gamasutra recently discussed the PS4's underlying hardware with lead architect Mark Cerny, providing new insight on the guts of the console.
Cerny says the PS4's custom silicon incorporates not only the CPU and GPU, but also a "large number of other units." The chip has a dedicated audio unit to perform processing for voice chat and multiple audio streams. It also has a hardware block ...

The 463rd review of the first Steve Jobs movie
As promised, I have watched FunnyOrDie.com's fictionalized account of Steve Jobs's life entitled iSteve. As threatened, here is the review. (By the way, this whole review could be considered a spoiler—of the movie or your appetite for blogs—so if you're one of those people, avert your eyes.)
For those who fail to slavishly follow the genius that is Justin Long and his slow-shuttle-to-the-stars career trajectory, let me break off, like a metaphorical Kit Kat of Knowledge, the important chunks for you. iSteve is FunnyOrDie.com's ...

A quick look at BitFenix's Prodigy enclosure
Mini-ITX motherboards have come a long way since the early days of soldered-on processors and PCI expansion cards. Current offerings have standard desktop sockets, PCI Express x16 slots, and peripheral ports up the wazoo. They can accommodate some of the fastest processors and GPUs available today.
It's still difficult to find truly enthusiast-grade Mini-ITX enclosures, however. Most cases designed to accommodate the form factor have caveats, including limited support for larger ...
