ITC rejects Motorola touchscreen patent complaint against Apple
The U.S. International Trade Commission has found no evidence that Apple infringed on a Motorola Mobility patent covering a touchscreen function. The finding ends an investigation that began in November 2010 when Motorola petitioned the ITC to ban imports of Apple products because they allegedly infringed a handful of Motorola patents. The ITC has already found no evidence of infringement by Apple on the other patents in question.

IBM snatches UrbanCode for devops prowess
Sensing a need among its customers for faster software development, IBM has acquired UrbanCode, a provider of tools suited for the emerging practice of rapid software development called devops. UrbanCode's ARA (application release automation) software automates the process of delivering applications and application updates directly from development shops to end-devices such as mobile phones and servers. UrbanCode packaged its core ARA software as part of a devops integrated suite of tools for building, deploying, provisioning and releasing software packages.

SAP and Oracle fare best as software growth slows
A growing interest in big data, analytics, and cloud computing helped propel a weak software enterprise market last year, according to research from IDC. SAP and Oracle fared the best among the large software vendors. The worldwide software market grew 3.6 percent year-on-year and totalled $342.6 billion, which is less than half the growth rates seen in 2010 and 2011, according to IDC's latest Worldwide Semiannual Software Tracker.

Apple's lead over Samsung cut in half in survey of future-purchase plans
Apple's iPhone lost ground in the last three months to smartphones from rival Samsung in a survey of consumers' future purchase plans, a market research firm said last week. According to 451 Research's ChangeWave, of those 4,000 consumers polled who said they planned to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days, 40 percent said they would purchase an iPhone. That was a 10-percentage point drop from ChangeWave's last such survey, conducted in December 2012.

Infor partnering with Amazon on Redshift-powered cloud analytics platform

Office 365 furnishes 4% of Microsoft's Office division revenue
Microsoft's Business division, which manages the company's Office cash cow, recorded a 5 percent revenue bump in the first quarter over the same period in 2012, an increase driven by a surge in enterprises signing long-term licensing agreements. Office 365, Microsoft's expanded subscription program that it's promoted for both businesses and consumers -- and on which the company is pinning plans to drive future income -- will account for about 4 percent of the division's revenue for the fiscal year, Microsoft said.
