White House Endorses Internet Sales Tax
Read it and weep folks, the White House now says it supports the Internet Sales Tax bill.
Although States presently have the authority to tax the sale of goods or services sold from out-of-state vendors, they are prevented under current law from requiring the collection of such duly-enacted taxes. As a consequence, while local small business retailers follow the law and collect sales taxes from customers who make purchases in their stores, many big business online and catalog retailers do not collect the same taxes. Because these out-of-state companies are able to play by a different set of rules, this disparity undermines the ability of cities and States to invest in K-12 education, police and fire protection, access to affordable health care, and funding for roads and bridges. This bill would eliminate the unfair advantage currently enjoyed by big out-of-state online companies over local neighborhood-based small businesses.

Netflix Announces $12 Family Plan
At least this announcement isn't as bad as what analysts had suggested earlier today.
The company also today disclosed its intention to offer a new family streaming plan in the United States. In a letter released to shareholders, Netflix said that the upcoming offering would cost $12 and let subscribers stream as many as four devices simultaneously. Netflix's current plan, which costs $8 a month, allows a couple of streams at the same time. Management predicted that "fewer than 1 percent" of current subscribers would be attracted.

Reuters Fired Its Indicted Social Media Editor
After reading this article, I am amazed this moron wasn't fired sooner. How hard is it to lay low after being indicted for helping Anonymous access company websites?
Thomson Reuters could handle its deputy social media editor, Matthew Keys, being indicted on federal hacking charges. But after a week in which he was harshly criticized for inaccurate tweets to his 35,000-plus followers about the Boston Marathon attacks and in which he had a public spat with his boss Keys finds himself out of a job.

Facebook Using Google's WebP Image Format
Oh look, Facebook makes another change that ultimate just pisses everyone off.
Facebook has begun using a Google image format called WebP that could lower its network costs and speed up its Web site. But the move has angered some members. When people upload JPEG photos, the social-networking juggernaut converts them into the WebP format. And now it also apparently has begun delivering those images to people with browsers that can handle them, which today means Chrome and Opera.

Better Game Publishers? We Need Better Everything
In response to the editorial we linked last week (here), another anonymous game developer has responded with an editorial of their own.
Making a game is a team effort, so I often find that people are quick to take credit for successes and blame the rest of the team (or management!) for the failures. This isn't unique to publishers, or even to games. So I agree: there are idiots who are working in publishing right now. I've worked for them and with them. But as someone who has also seen both sides of the fence, let me tell you there are idiots everywhere.

Word of the Day: Glasshole
As much as I hate to poke fun of our pal cyborg Sergey, you have to admit that Glasshole is exactly what comes to mind when you see someone wearing those damn things.
With all the lucky first Google Glass owners now starting to receive their wearable face computers in the mail, we are already seeing a rise in the "glasshole"an endearing term used to describe people who do not use the gadgets in socially acceptable ways.

Netflix Needs To Crack Down On Sharing
If you ask me, this is a seriously dumb idea. Now mind you, this is NOT Netflix suggesting this, it's an armchair quarterback giving his two cents on the matter.
"It's time to change," Pachter said in an interview. "They can say they're cracking down on piracy. They can appeal to fairness. It's great if the parent has a subscription and the kid watches it in the college dorm."

The Browsing And Downloading Habits Of The U.S. Government
It is old news that our elected officials are some of the biggest hypocrites on the planet but it is still fun to see what shows they pirate.
Last week the privacy invasive CISPA bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives, taking it one step closer to becoming law. The proposed bill allows warrant-less spying by Internet companies on behalf of Government agencies. Turning the tables, TorrentFreak decided to "spy" on download and browsing habits at the House and other prominent Government institutions, using publicly available data.

iPads Causing Children To Require Therapy?
Toddlers becoming so addicted to iPads they require therapy? Might we suggest an alternative title for this article called "Parents that should have their asses kicked"?
Experts have warned that parents who allow babies and toddlers to access tablet computers for several hours a day are in danger of causing "dangerous" long term effects. The youngest known patient being treated in the UK is a four-year-old girl from the South East.

GIGABYTE Z77N-WiFi Mini-ITX Motherboard
Shopping for a powerful pint-sized motherboard with built-in WiFi? PC Perspective has the GIGABYTE Z77N-WiFi Mini-ITX in house for a little review action.
While the Z77N-WiFi doesn't include all the frills of higher priced boards, GIGABYTE did include exactly what would be needed for using this board in an HTPC capacity - onboard WiFi and LAN, SATA ports, and plenty of video output ports. As has been said previously, this board is not slouch and did perform well within expectations. The overclocking performance was the most impressive feat of all
