Westinghouse to tease 110-inch 4K LED TV at CES
Westinghouse are teasing a huge new product for 2013 that we should hear more about in just over a month's time at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. Westinghouse are touting a huge 110-inch 4K LED TV, which is much bigger than the 84-inch sets we still can't afford.
Westinghouse aren't providing any more details on the set, but have said that there will be more "surprises" in store. So, if the 84-inch 4K TVs weren't impressive enough, or big enough, it looks like Westinghouse have your back with 110 inches. We should see, and report on, this TV at CES 2013 in January.
What do you think of this size? You'd need a gigantic room to house it in, but oh boy would it look amazing.

Verizon filed for patent that would allow a DVR to watch, and listen to you in your living room
Verizon has just filed a very creepy patent, which is for a DVR that would be capable of recording what happens in your living room. Not just audio, but video, too. Verizon say that the technology could help provide targeted ads for whatever you might be doing in your living room.
So, if you were jumping around doing Zumba for example, the DVR would provide ads for fitness. If you were sitting down talking to a friend about your latest Johnnie Walker Blue Label, it would serve up ads on alcohol or other related areas. The other problem is that Verizon aren't the only ones who are looking at doing this, or who have already filed patents for this type of creepy DVR tech.
Comcast patented a similar technology back in 2008, which recommended content based on people that it recognized in the room, and Google proposed a patent for Google TV that would feature audio and video recorders that would work out how many people were in the room watching TV. Verizon's patent was published just last week, but was filed in May 2011. It gets worse: Verizon provides two examples of the context-sensitive DVR's use in a couple's living room - where sounds of an argument would throw up ads for marriage counselling, while sounds of "cuddling" would provide ads for contraceptives.
Creepy. Stalker-y. Wrong.

Nokia selling headquarters, then leasing it back from the buyer
Nokia still isn't doing well when it comes to cash. Their new line of Lumia Windows 8 Phones are selling well, but the company is still burning through cash. The company has decided to sell its headquarters in Finland to Exillion for around 170 million euros. Nokia will then lease the property back from the company.
Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia's CFO:
We had a comprehensive sales process with both Finnish and foreign investors and we are very pleased with this outcome. As we have said before, owning real estate is not part of Nokia's core business and when good opportunities arise we are willing to exit these types of non-core assets. We are naturally continuing to operate in our head office building on a long-term basis.
Nokia is interested in focusing on core parts of its business, which, apparently, doesn't include owning land. The move is one of cost cutting, and in this case, they will be getting an inflow of cash, but will have to pay to lease the property back from the company. There is good news on the horizon, though, as it appears that Windows Phone is picking up steam as a platform.

CoolTT: intelliPaper allows you to add a USB drive to your business card or other paper product
There have been a lot of cool advancements in recent years, but one staple of the business world hasn't seen much improvement. I'm talking about the traditional business card, which has remained a staple of business for many years and appears as though it will continue to be around for several more years.
A company is doing something new with business cards, and paper in general. They have developed technology that allows them to embed a USB flash drive directly into the paper, so now your business card can pass along your contact information, resume, or something else digitally, instead of having to provide a link on the page.
They are currently running a funding campaign on
Indiegogo, with $645 of their $30,000 funding goal met. It's a really interesting concept and could revolutionize trade shows and advertising. However, right now, the storage capacity of the paper is quite small, only 5.1MB or so, but that is just the starting point.

California requiring app developers to have privacy policy or face $2,500-per-download fine
California is after the app developers. They had given app developers one month to get a privacy policy so that they would be in compliance with California law, which requires that all "commercial online services" that gather personal information to have a prominently displayed privacy policy.
That month is now up and app developers who still do not have a privacy policy will face fines up to $2,500 per download. Not everyone is happy with the policy that California is taking, since they are basically regulating the whole of the internet, however the Association for Competitive Technology is actually for it.
ACT executive director Reed Morgan: "We need to follow the law, and look at the upside of the law. [The next generation of mobile apps will] deal with your financial information, your educational information, your health care. Being transparent about your data will win you contracts."
If you're an app developer and you haven't produced a privacy policy quite yet, it's really important that you get with it and do so, so that you don't face the massive fines.

Wii U consoles won't have the massive day-one update factory installed until 2013
Anyone who purchased the Wii U at launch or followed the launch via TweakTown or another source should know that users face a large update as soon as they plug their console in. Worse yet, if power is lost during the three-plus hour update, the console can be bricked and will have to be returned to Nintendo.
Sadly, this is a fact of life that will remain for at least another month. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that it will be a few months before the update is factory installed.
"Nintendo developers want to make sure that the very best product is available to consumers," Fils-Aime said in the interview. "That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible. That's why the system update was required on Day One - and this is quite similar to what's happened with other consumer electronic products."
If you have a slow internet connection, unstable power, or a limited data plan, you might think about holding off on purchasing the Wii U until sometime into 2013 to avoid having to download and install this update.

Samsung Galaxy S III users on AT&T can now pick up Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
AT&T has started handing out updates to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for users with a Samsung Galaxy S III. Unfortunately for most users, the update isn't being handed out in the traditional manner. Instead of coming over-the-air, as most updates have been, AT&T is only handing out the update via the Samsung Kies desktop application.
This means interested parties will need to plug in their device to their computer and follow the instructions that
Samsung has provided here. AT&T Galaxy S III users are just now getting Android 4.1, even though the Nexus 4 is shipping with 4.2. It's now time to play the waiting game again to see how long it will be before Galaxy S III users get Android 4.2.

iPhone 5 seems to be a hot seller in China, China Unicom reported to have seen more than 100,000 pre-orders
It's probably a good thing that Apple finally got approval to sell its iPhone in China. China is a booming economy and one of the largest developing markets for mobile gadgets. China Unicom, China's second largest wireless carrier, started accepting reservations for the new iPhone 5 on Monday.
The device doesn't launch until December 14, and pre-orders have only been accepted for two days, but reports are saying that they have already seen 100,000 pre-orders in the first day alone. The iPhone 4 saw only 50,000 first day pre-orders, so Apple and its investors should be happy about reaching this new market.

GorgeousTT: Anostyle anodizes your iPhone to different colors for the cost of an iPhone
Wish Apple offered the iPhone 5 in more colors than just black and white? Well, Anostyle has your back with their new anodization service. Anostyle will take your iPhone 5 and coat it in a variety of colors using the same process that Apple does: anodization. This process is much stronger than painting as the color is in the metal.
Wow. BGR author Jonathan Geller sent in his iPhone 5 and had the company deck it out in gold--classy. For the small cost of another iPhone, $249 in other words, you can get your iPhone 5 tinted to a different color. An iPad mini can also be done and will set you back $299.
I definitely think I will see about getting my iPhone 5 done as this black is just a bit boring and not flashy enough for my tastes. If/when I get it done, I'll report on the quality of the product. Until then, it looks like quite the deal, considering Colorware charges a price in the neighborhood of $850.

John McAfee in Guatemala, planning press conference for tomorrow
John McAfee is currently on the run from police, who suspect him as the person who murdered his neighbor.
We had previously reported on this issue. Yesterday, McAfee said that he wasn't in Guatemala and that the meta-data on a picture taken by Vice Magazine had been faked. Today, he has come out and recanted that statement.
Guess what? He actually IS in Guatemala: "I apologize for all of the misdirections over the past few days. It was not easy to exit Belize and required many supporters in many countries. I am in Guatemala and will be meeting with Guatemalan officials this morning. If all goes well I will do a press conference tomorrow."
McAfee has said that he plans to provide more information later today, so we'll be vigilant in making sure that it gets disseminated to you all if it is anything of consequence. McAfee went on the run on November 12, 2012, when Belize police said he was a person of interest in the murder of Gregory Viant Faull, his neighbor on Ambergris Caye island.

Sony touts that the PS3 is the number #1 device used for Netflix streaming in the living room
Sony is pretty happy with some recent findings by Netflix that place the PlayStation 3 as the number one TV-connected device used for streaming the online video provider's content. Netflix even said that, on occasion, the PlayStation 3 actually surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment and made it to number one overall.
Impressive. Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, had the following to say:
PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our number one platform overall. PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.
Sony then, in their announcement post, goes on to brag about how all of the improvements that Netflix later debuted on consoles started off on the PlayStation 3. Really, it is just a post with them bragging, but it is interesting that the PS3 has the most subscribers. Maybe people are using the money they would have spent on Xbox Live on a Netflix subscription instead?

Google updates Gmail app for iOS, brings it to version 2.0 with a complete rewrite
I awoke to a notification on my iPhone that I had an app available for update. A quick check showed that Google had updated the Gmail app. Unfortunately for me, the app refused to let me update, as you can see in the picture below, so I went over to the Gmail Blog to see what I was missing.
Once there, I discovered that I was missing quite a lot. The new version of the app has been completely rewritten to be faster, sleeker, and easier to use. This means that Google has completely updated the look and feel, and made various improvements, such as profile pictures showing in messages and infinite scrolling in the message lists.
Probably one of the largest new features added to the app is the ability to support multiple Gmail accounts. Users can now add up to five Google Accounts in the app and then easily switch between them with a couple of taps. Google says that it's a feature many of you have been waiting for.

Check this out: HP released a printer that also functions as a Wi-Fi hot spot
I know, this may seem a bit mundane to most, but it really is the epitome of proliferation of wireless technology. HP has released a new All-In-One printer that is just a bit more all-in-one. By that, I mean that the new HP Hotspot LaserJet Pro M1218nfs MFP--really long name, I know--will scan, print, copy, AND serve as a hotspot, allowing up to 8 people to get wireless internet.
For now, the printer is only available in India, where it might be a bit more needed due to economic conditions. However, this is something that could easily, and probably will at some point, come to the United States and Europe. "The HP Hotspot is a new All-in-One+1 printer that completely redefines the role a multifunction printer can play in a SOHO or small business environment," Nitin Hiranandani, director of printing for HP India, said in a statement.
The printer will set you back 18,306 rupees, which is equivalent to $334. Is this a feature that you would use? Would you like to see a printer like this in the US? Let us know!

RIM BlackBerry 10's new operating system tricks
As anticipation grows for the release of BlackBerry's new operating system and accompanying mobile devices in January, analysis of the new features is beginning to pile in. Stocked with a list of game-changers, the new operating system,
BlackBerry 10 is garnering support in a variety of circles.
Not only has Research in Motion delivered more features that CIOs and IT departments have loved for a long time, but they've been careful to develop some other features that will be sure to capture the attention of the general consumer base.
Debates concerning how enterprises should handle the phenomenon of employees wishing to bring their own device to work (BYOD) rage on, but RIM saw this trend coming and have unveiled a new feature in BlackBerry 10 dubbed BlackBerry Balance. According to
InfoWorld, "
BlackBerry Balance allows users to switch between a personal and an enterprise part of the phone, which are separated down to the file level." This gives IT departments and system administrators unrivaled granularity regarding the separation and security of sensitive data. One example of this is the ability for system admins to prevent work data from being copied to the "personal workspace" on the devices.
ITpro explains that if a user leaves the company and takes the BlackBerry device, then network administrators will be able to remotely wipe all corporate information from the device without affecting personal data. He projects that this could make BlackBerry 10 desirable in sectors where information is meant to be kept confidential such as healthcare, government, legal and financial verticals.
Where BlackBerry really stands out against its competition is the ease in which users can toggle between work and private "modes." All a user needs to do is swipe across the middle of the screen, and press either the "work" or "personal" button. On a device that can be used for both work and play, this feature shines as one of the best implemented in the new BlackBerry 10 OS. Additionally, Balance separates user data down to the file system level, as opposed to being implemented on top of the operating system.
Another exciting feature of BlackBerry 10 is a universal inbox feature. Every message, notification, feed and calendar event is gathered in the Hub, and wherever the user is in the workflow, one simple gesture is all they need to access it.
BlackBerry 10 also received FIPS 140-2 Certification, meaning that U.S. government agencies will be able to deploy BlackBerry 10 smartphones when they are launched in January. According to RIM, this is the first time their devices have received this certification ahead of the devices' launch, which is an exciting breakthrough for a company that has a reputation for delivering devices and technologies well-suited for business application.
Whether you love the idea of being able to access work and personal data securely on one device, or appreciate the ability as a business administrator to remotely wipe sensitive data when an employee departs from the organization, BlackBerry 10 has a slew of attractive, new features on the way.

Facebook Messenger for Android taking on SMS with account-less use update
The SMS turned 20 years old
yesterday, but a number of companies are working on ways to eradicate it for good. Facebook has now thrown its hat into the ring as it has made changes to its Android application that can replace SMS messages for good.
Facebook announced today its messenger application for Android won't require users to have a Facebook account. Instead, those Facebook-less users will have the option of putting in their name and phone number into the messenger application and they can start using it as their alternate to SMS messages.
As of now, the update will only be available in select countries including India, Australia, Indonesia, Venezuela and South Africa, but the new feature will expand to other countries as quickly as possible. iOS users will also need to wait as there's currently no timeline available for when the new updated Facebook messenger application will be available on that platform.

Ashton Kutcher as Apple CEO Steve Jobs in 'jOBS' promotional photo released
Ashton Kutcher playing the role of Steve Jobs in an upcoming film which chronicles the famous entrepreneur's life
isn't exactly new news. But today, a new promotional photo was released that shows just how much Kutcher resembles Steve Jobs in the film as he strikes an iconic pose.
The film, which is titled jOBS, will premiere next month on the final night of the Sundance Film Festival. The Sundance Institute not only released the image above, but they also released a synopsis of jOBS:
"The true story of one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history, jOBS chronicles the defining 30 years of Steve Jobs' life. jOBS is a candid, inspiring and personal portrait of the one who saw things differently."
We're sure it'll only be a matter of time until jOBS is released to the public shortly after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Seeing how Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th, 2011, maybe that would be the best time to release jOBS to the public.

Researchers to dig for organisms isolated from the world for over 100,000 years
It looks as though some UK researchers are about to get a taste of the real The Thing with their latest adventures in one of the harshest environments on the Earth.
The mission leads them to Lake Ellsworth in the Antarctic in the search for life with Lake Ellsworth being 3km (2 miles) below the glacier. The team will have to drill through the ice before December 12 using a high pressure sterile water jet that needs to be heated to 90 degrees Celcius (194 Fahrenheit) and sterilize the patch of lake with intense ultraviolet light before they even attempt to retrieve a sample.
This is all in the mission to find life - and if they do find organisms, it'll be quite the discovery as they've been completely isolated from the outside world for at least 100,000 years according to the team, and most likely - a lot longer. This adventure could help scientists better understand how life evolves on Earth, and even off-planet.
The mission is complicated, as they'll be drilling the deepest borehole ever made with hot water, and will only have 24 hours to sterilize the lake and collect samples before it refreezes. Incredibly exciting!

Thanks to THQ's humble bundle, company stock soars
It was only a month ago that
we reported THQ were having financial difficulties, and just a few days ago
we told you about the Humble THQ Bundle, which saw some seriously great deals for games.
Well, since THQ unveiled that deal, their stock prices have seen a huge surge. THQ's shares were $1.07 a piece on November 28, and when the bundle was released on the 29th, shares spiked at $1.60 - an increase of 37.96%.
By Friday, the shares slumped back down to $1.45 - but this still represents a huge improvement from $1.07. The bundle saw $3 million raised with 576,117 copies sold and has contributions from THQ executives like Brian Farrell and Jason Rubin. We could see this as a change to the way companies look at selling games, with a 'pay what you like' take on things.
It has obviously worked for THQ, let's just hope we see more of this in the future!

BitFenix Ghost Mid-Tower Chassis Review
Introduction
As I sit back and try to think of the cases I have seen that are specifically designed with silence of operation in mind, only a handful or less really stick out. Think about that for a minute. Out of all the cases I have seen in my time with TweakTown, there have been maybe ten entries to this segment. To me that leaves a huge gaping hold for manufacturers to delve into, since the trend in all computing seems to be moving away from fast and loud to a more subdued quick yet silent approach. I for one was sold on the value of silence when I was first introduced to Noctua, and ever since, my PCs all run quiet, whether air or water cooled.
One manufacturer to step into the huge empty hole is BitFenix with its latest release of cases. Things that come to mind that definitely need to be addressed to make for a successful silent build are based first off the choice of fans. The Spectre Series of fans has always done well here, so BitFenix is already on the right path with its current offerings. Then of course you should also address the places that tend to resonate noise in a typical build, and that is the front of the chassis as the air passes in, and the side panels where vibrations tend to go right through a steel panel. In this design there is the more typical cloth composite materials used on the side panels, but BitFenix was also busy developing the Serenitek Silencing material that backs the front door of this new design.
There are plenty more features we are used to from BitFenix as well as some other new offerings not usually seen, but I need to save something for the rest of the review. For now, get yourself situated, because the Ghost mid-tower chassis from BitFenix is well worth your time to have a look at what it has to offer.
Even though there were some slight issues with the sample I was sent, I really think the Ghost is a case many buyers will gravitate to for any of their future builds - I just think it is that cool. Continue on through the specifications and packaging images, because I don't think by the time you see this case you will be disagreeing with my last statement.

As the storage product editor here at TweakTown, I have to wonder how much data was lost in this tragedy.
This isn't the first ioSafe product we've reviewed at TweakTown. We've already reviewed the first generation ioSafe Solo, Solo Pro with USB 3.0 and even ioSafe's portable model, Rugged Portable. In our testing ioSafe has a perfect record in product quality and ease of use.

LG EXPANDS L-SERIES RANGE WITH DEBUT OF OPTIMUS L9
The LG Optimus L9 will continue LG's stylish L-Series line-up of smartphones with its Australian debut this week. Following the successful launches of the Optimus L2 Dual SIM, Optimus L3, Optimus L5, and Optimus L7 earlier this year, the Optimus L9 is set to continue the great success of the L-Series range.
Inheriting LG's premium L-Style design philosophy, the Optimus L9 has a 9.1mm thin body with a slimming metallic streak, and is shaped in a modern square format that provides a comfortable grip, making the most of its slim and stylish design.
The large 4.7-inch IPS (In-Plane Switching) display on the Optimus L9 delivers clear and true-to-life images with incredible detail for a heightened viewing experience. The high-density 2,150mAh battery powers the attractive handset, and users will experience innovative built- in features designed to make it delightfully easier and more functional to use.
The Optimus L9 was developed to be smarter, and with LG's differentiated User Experience (UX) features such as the QTranslator, the My Style Keypad function, and the increasingly popular QuickMemoTM, this is certainly the case.
The QTranslator function translates not only words, but also entire sentences and phrases with a simple scan from over 44 foreign languages. Using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, it recognises letters upon scanning with the camera and utilises an electronic dictionary or online translation engine to translate words, sentences, or phrases.
The MyStyle Keypad function comfortably adjusts the key formation of the keypad according to whether the user is texting with one hand (right or left-handed) or with two hands, thus providing a more versatile and comfortable user experience.
With the inclusion of LG's highly popular QuickMemoTM, the Optimus L9 also lets users capture images, write memos, and share ideas by simply using their fingers to write a message on the screen. This is a perfect solution for those times when you can't seem to find a pen anywhere, or for when you want to have some fun and share captured images along with notes on the images with friends and family.
"The Optimus L9 is a great smartphone and will appeal to discerning and extremely style driven consumers that are after a well featured premium handset with Android software," said Lambro Skropidis, General Manager of Marketing, LG Australia. "LG will continue to offer differentiated value throughout our handset range and the Optimus L9 is a fantastic example of the great feature set and technology we can deliver in a compelling price package. be quiet! Debuts the SilentWings 2 PWM Fans
be quiet!, market leader for PC power supplies in Germany for six straight years, is introducing PWM controlled models to complete their existing SilentWings 2 PC case fan lineup. New models will be released in 80, 92, 120 and 140 mm sizes and offer all the unique SilentWings features known from the existing product range such as best-in-class bearings and exchangeable mounting elements.
The SilentWings 2 fan from be quiet! has earned high praise from both professional product reviewers and consumers, making it clearly a market favorite. SilentWings 2 uses the most advanced bearing technology on the market called fluid dynamic bearing (FDB). The bearing essentially has the fan float on a cushion of fluid, resulting in extremely low noise levels because there is virtually no friction to create sound. When coupled with the unique aerodynamic fan blade design be quiet! is famous for, SilentWings 2 is virtually inaudible.
"We are really happy to announce this product is shipping now since we've had so many requests from the marketplace to add this functionality to SilentWings 2. We wanted to make it right, and ensure that the PWM models are true SilentWings 2 through and through." said Scott Richards, Global Brand Director at be quiet!.
PWM, short for pulse width modulation, is the preferred standard for those who want their PC case fans always to run at the best ratio between performance and quietness. There is no need for hardware fan controllers since the fan is automatically controlled by the computer BIOS. Silent Wings2 PWM also offers the popular and often copied detachable mounting elements for different scopes of usage. Even the very long expected lifespan of the original SilentWings 2 fans remains unchanged at 300,000 hours.
SilentWings 2 PWM will be available in December, including all major sizes, meaning 80, 92, 120 and 140 millimeter. The price starts at 19 Euro up to 23 Euro for the 140 mm version.
