Miracast certification begins, with Intel on board
There hasn't been a ton of buzz out there about Miracast, the Wi-Fi Alliance's new wireless display standard. That's too bad, because the standard seems to have potential. It promises ubiquitous wireless streaming of content between, say, phones and TVs, or even laptops and projectors. Support for protected content is in the mix, as is "simplified discovery and setup," according to the Wi-Fi Alliance. Best of all, a Wi-Fi network isn't required—devices should be able to connect to each other directly via Wi-Fi Direct.
This morning, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that it has begun certifying the first wave of Miracast-enabled devices. Among the freshly certified products are a pair of smartphones, LG's Optimus G and Samsung's Galaxy S III, as ...

Latitude tablet has replaceable battery and optional stylus
Windows 8 will spawn a wave of new tablets, most of which are meant for consumers. Dell's upcoming Latitude 10 targets the business crowd, and The Verge's hands-on look reveals some interesting twists to the usual formula. Despite being only 10 mm thick, the Latitude appears to include not only a full-sized SD slot, but also a proper USB port. I see what looks like Mini HDMI connector, as well. All those goodies are right on the tablet, and there's an auxiliary dock that adds four more USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and a standard HDMI out.
One of the Latitude's most interesting features is its 30Wh battery, which can be removed with the flick of a latch. Finally! Most tablets bury their batteries inside the chassis, ...

Desktop Trinity boards pop up on Gigabyte's site
AMD's desktop Trinity APUs have yet to break cover, but that hasn't stopped Gigabyte from detailing a couple of FM2 motherboards designed for the new processors. Navigate over to Gigabyte's website, and you'll find listings for the GA-F2A75M-D3H and GA-F2A85X-UP4. The latter is a full-sized ATX affair with a black PCB, so you know it's targeted at enthusiasts. There's even a bright red power button on the circuit board.

PC version of Borderlands 2 is 'best way to play?' Shocking!
Well, I am very slowly recovering, I think, from whatever virus got me last week. I'm hoping to be back working in earnest today, finally.
One thing I have been doing with my limited energy is following the launch coverage for Borderlands 2 . As a huge fan of the original, I've had a number of problems with the reviews of the new one, mostly when the reviewer ...

Valve may beta test hardware project in 2013
Knowing Valve's cautious approach to new ventures and its emphasis on polish over timeliness, I wasn't expecting a taste of its first hardware project until... well, until some time around the heat death of the universe. According to a recent piece by Engadget, however, we may see some kind of a public beta much sooner than that.
The piece is about Valve's hardware skunkworks and the woman in charge—Jeri Ellsworth, a self-taught chip designer whose claims to fame include creating a hardware Commodore 64 emulator. Ellsworth seems ...
