Google to pay record-setting $22.5 million fine over privacy practices
Google will pay a historic fine to settle U.S. government charges that it violated privacy laws when it tracked users of Apple's Safari browser via cookies. The $22.5 million civil penalty is the largest ever secured by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for a violation of one of its orders.

White House exploring executive order to secure critical networks
President Obama is exploring the option of using his executive authority to get government agencies and critical infrastructure owners to implement better controls for protecting their computer networks. According to a report by Reuters, the White House is considering the move because of the continuing delay by Congress to pass the Cybersecurity Act bill.

Infosys faces new visa fraud allegation
The Indian offshoring giant Infosys ran a "full-throated campaign of retaliation" against employees to deter them from cooperating with federal authorities investigating visa fraud, according to a new lawsuit.

Digia buys Qt app framework from Nokia
Digia has acquired the Qt framework from Nokia, giving it full control over the application framework, and now plans to expand support to more platforms, it said on Thursday. Digia, based in Finland, started taking over Qt in March 2011 when it purchased Nokia's Qt commercial licensing and services business. The latest deal means Digia is responsible for all Qt activities including product development, as well as the commercial and open source licensing, the company said.

Google builds stronger Flash sandbox in Chrome
Google today announced it had wrapped up work on a stronger Flash sandbox in the Windows version of Chrome, and would soon ship the same for its OS X browser. Chrome 21, which launched July 31, completed efforts to ditch the aged NPAPI (Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface) Flash plug-in for one built to Google's own PPAPI (Pepper Plugin Application Programming Interface) standard.

HP takes $8 billion writedown on services arm
Hewlett-Packard said Wednesday that it would take a $8 billion charge in its third fiscal quarter owing to weakness in its enterprise services division. The writedown is technically for "the impairment of goodwill" associated with HP's services. In the financial world, "goodwill" refers to intangible assets, such as brand strength, that are taken into account when determining a company's total value.

With the upcoming release of Microsoft Office 13, Microsoft is encouraging developers and administrators to use open Web technologies like JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to build their add-on apps.
