(PR) Microsoft Unveils the New Office
Today, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the customer preview of the new Microsoft Office, available at office.com/preview. The next release features an intuitive design that works beautifully with touch, stylus, mouse or keyboard across new Windows devices, including tablets. The new Office is social and unlocks modern scenarios in reading, note-taking, meetings and communications and will be delivered to subscribers through a cloud service that is always up to date.
"We are taking bold steps at Microsoft," Ballmer said at the press conference in San Francisco. "The new, modern Office will deliver unparalleled productivity and flexibility for both consumers and business customers. It is a cloud service and will fully light-up when paired with Windows 8."

Intel Intros 240 GB SSD 330 Series Variant
Intel expanded its mainstream client SSD 330 series with the addition of a new 240 GB variant. The SSD 330 series, till date, only had sub-200 GB capacities, with 180 GB leading the pack. It was believed that Intel was making sure SSD 330 steered clear of the performance-segment SSD 520 series, to prevent internal competition that could end up hurting the SSD 520, and its higher margins for Intel. It appears, though, that with large-scale price-cuts, room has been created for a new 240 GB SSD 330 series model.
Built in the 2.5-inch 9.5 mm-thick form-factor with SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and driven by an LSI-SandForce controller, the 240 GB SSD 330 comes with sequential speeds of up to 500 MB/s (reads) and 450 MB/s (writes). It has rated 4K random access performance of 42,000 IOPS (reads) with 52,000 IOPS (writes). The SSD will be sold in bulk as drive-only trays, drive-only retail packages, and retail packages with migration-kits and 3.5-inch bay adapters (for desktops). Intel is yet to release pricing details, although a price of around US $200 seems likely. In related news, the wide-ranging price-cuts reported last week, have taken effect, according to the company.

GeForce GTX 660 Arrives Mid-August: Report
NVIDIA's newest product designed to strike the price-performance "sweetspot," the GeForce GTX 660, is set for a mid-August market launch, according to a SweClockers report. The new chip could roll out some time between August 13 and 19. Given that other Kepler-based SKUs have been launched on Tuesdays or Thursdays, it's likely that the launch date could be either the 14th, or the 16th. The GTX 660 will be based on the 28 nm "GK104" GPU. It will feature 1,344 or 1,152 CUDA cores, and a 192-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 1.5 GB of memory, according to the report. The new GPU could capture a crucial sub-$300 price-point.

NVIDIA Forums Hack: Passwords Not Salted
A group of hackers that claimed responsibility for hacking NVIDIA forums (forums.nvidia.com), which goes by the name "Team Apollo," posted the first piece of its exploits on Pastebin (find it here). The user data dump contains details of every fifth user of the forums. From what we can tell looking at the pasted data (which is now very much in the public domain), the passwords found in the user tables are not salted. NVIDIA was less than honest about that part.
The passwords are stored as raw MD5 hashes, which can be fairly-easily decrypted (when compared to hashes with salt values). To make matters worse, certain MD5 decryption websites have large databases of pre-decrypted MD5 phrases, potentially making decryption these hashes easy. Or you could just use a CUDA-accelerated MD5 decryption tool, which munches through unsalted MD5 hash values at the speed of a small supercomputer. If you have an NVIDIA Forums account, and your passwords on other websites (forums, email accounts, banks) even remotely resemble that of your NVIDIA forums account, it is strongly recommended that you change your passwords on each of those other websites.

AMD Desktop "Trinity" APUs Delayed to October, Clubbed with FX "Vishera" Launch
AMD reportedly deferred the launch of its next-generation "Trinity" A-series accelerated processing units (APUs) for desktops, to October, 2012. The products were originally slated for August. The delay affects launches of most APUs in the socket FM2 package, including the A10-5800K, a top-performing part in the series.
Launches of the A-Series "Trinity" APUs appear to have been clubbed with those of the FX-Series "Volan" (Vishera silicon, Piledriver micro-architecture) processors, including the FX-8350 and FX-6300. Meanwhile, AMD is in the process of phasing out its low-cost socket AM3 processors (such as Athlon II AM3, and Phenom II AM3), replacing them with Athlon II FM2, Phenom II AM3+, and mid-range FX-Series AM3+.

Microsoft Readies Xbox 360 Limited Edition "Halo 4" Console Bundle
At Comic Con, Microsoft unveiled its newest Xbox 360 Limited Edition bundle, themed after Halo 4. Its makers refer to it as "the definitive console bundle of 2012," and hope to make it available in limited quantities, in Autumn. The bundle includes an Xbox 360 console with 320 GB HDD, a pair of Xbox 360 wireless controllers, a wired headset, and a copy of Halo 4. The console and controllers are decked in Halo 4 skins (translucent bodies with a blue tinge and graphics). Apart from the four items, buyers of the new bundle receive Xbox LIVE tokens for exclusive Halo 4 in-game and avatar marketplace DLC. Prolimatech Readies Cool-Blue Megahalems Rev. B CPU Cooler
Even as GIGABYTE is shedding its signature blue PCB color scheme for higher-end motherboards, leaving it to entry-thru-mid range products, Prolimatech is giving its flagship CPU cooler, the Megahalems Rev. B, a cool-blue finish in its new variant. This is almost exactly the same shade of blue as the one Gigabyte uses on its motherboards (refer to the third picture below). Most of the cooler's 88 stainless steel fins are blue, with the top fins on each of the two stacks retaining a chrome finish. The six 6 mm-thick heat pipes passing through them are made of nickel-plated copper, while most metal parts of the retention modules are colored black. The cooler otherwise retains the same specifications of the Megahalems Rev. B, including support for the latest CPU socket types, such as LGA2011. Prolimatech could charge a tiny premium over the original's US $70 price-tag.
