SSD prices in steady, substantial decline
On all too many occasions, we've bemoaned the state of hard drive prices. They rose sharply after last year's Thailand flooding and still haven't returned to what many of us would consider normal. There is good news on the storage front, though. The current generation of solid-state drives is cheaper than ever, with multiple models living comfortably below the dollar-per-gigabyte threshold.
To get a better sense of the SSD picture, we've analyzed a mountain of pricing information dating from early 2011 to Tuesday. The folks at Camelegg graciously provided the ...

Next-gen 3DMark trailer shows snazzy DX11 effects
While Epic polishes up Unreal Engine 4, and Square Enix works on... whatever next-gen project it's working on, Futuremark is hard at work on a new 3DMark benchmark to make high-end gaming PCs sweat. Earlier today, the Finnish firm released a trailer showing a new scene from that benchmark. As you'd expect, the scene is replete with DirectX 11 effects and looks quite impressive visually:

Rumor: Microsoft Surface tablets to cost $599, $799
On Tuesday, Microsoft stated that its Surface tablet for Windows RT will be priced in line with "comparable" ARM tablets. It also said the Windows 8 Pro model would be competitive with "Intel Ultrabook-class" systems. Sadly, the company stopped short of announcing actual prices.
Now, as you'd expect, the rumor mill is trying to fill the blanks. According to DigiTimes , "sources from notebook players" estimate that the Surface for Windows RT tablet will sell above ...

Microsoft previews Windows Phone 8
On the heels of its Surface tablet announcement, Microsoft has previewed another major product due out later this year: Windows Phone 8. The guys at The Verge were on the scene at the company's Windows Phone Summit in San Francisco this morning, and they liveblogged the event.
Based on their coverage (Microsoft doesn't have an official press release out yet), it looks like the rumors were true and Windows Phone 8 will indeed share a foundation with its PC counterpart, Windows 8. The two operating systems will have common code and ...

Acer's new M5 ultrabooks start at $680
Another day, another Ivy ultrabook announcement. This time, it's Acer, which has released details on the Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 notebook configurations that will be coming stateside. Three models will be available, and all of 'em are supposed to deliver eight hours of battery life. They're slim, too, at 0.8" thick.
The most interesting of the three may be the M5-481TG-6814, an awkward mouthful to say the least. This 14-incher sports a Core i5-3317U CPU and Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE graphics. The integrated GeForce has the same ...

SK Hynix to acquire SSD controller maker LAMD
The storage market is no stranger to acquisitions. In the last year or so, Seagate bought Samsung's HDD business, Western Digital picked up Hitachi's equivalent department, LSI acquired SandForce, and OCZ made a successful bid for Indilinx. Now, memory giant SK Hynix has announced that it's set to acquire SSD controller maker Link_A_Media Devices (LAMD).
I know what you're thinking: "Who?" LAMD hasn't been a major player in the consumer SSD market, but it's been designing controllers for more than eight years. At the Computex trade show earlier this month, Corsair revealed a new line of ...

The obligatory Surface blog post
Greetings, hippies. To be honest, I was going to simply ignore Microsoft's unveiling of the Surface tablet. I mean, tablets. As much fun as it's been to poke fun at Bill & Ballmer's Excellent Adventure through the years (and it has been fun), it just feels so 1996. Besides, the Redmond gang is making a much better run at things than I seem to be, so who am I to judge?
I know, a two-bit ...

Microsoft's ARM-powered Surface has Tegra inside
We already know the x86 version of Microsoft's Surface tablet will pack an Intel Ivy Bridge processor. What about the ARM model? Microsoft stayed mum on the subject during yesterday's press event. According to SlashGear, however, Nvidia has now confirmed that the Surface for Windows RT includes one of its Tegra chipsets. There's no word yet on which exact chip Microsoft is using, though:
The Tegra 3 is already quite a popular choice for tablet makers, at least on the Android side of the market. It powers Acer's Iconia Tab A510 and A700, Asus' Transformer Prime and Transformer Pad ...
