Trinity-toting HP Envy Sleekbook now available
Now you can get a not-quite-an-ultrabook from HP, too. The company has started taking orders for the Envy Sleekbook 6, a thin-and-light machine with a 15.6" display and one of AMD's new Trinity APUs. This is no ultrabook (largely because Intel holds a trademark on the term), but with a 0.78" thickness and a weight of 4.53 lbs, it's definitely much thinner and lighter than your typical 15-inch consumer laptop.

Intel Atom CPU anchors ultra-dense HP server
A standard 4U rackmount enclosure measures 7" tall, 19" wide, and up to 24" deep. How many servers do you think you could cram in one of those? 20? 100? How about 288? That's the maximum density of Gemini, a high-density server spawned by HP's Project Moonshot initiative.
Each one of the "server cartridges" contains a server-optimized Intel Atom processor code-named Centerton. The 64-bit chip has hardware virtualization support and takes advantage of ECC memory, making it well-suited to enterprise environments. Although Centerton ...

Liquid cooling chills supercomputer, warms surrounding buildings
Thanks in part to the popularity of closed-loop water coolers, liquid cooling is becoming more and more prevalent in high-end desktop PCs. Servers are getting in on the action, too, although you won't find them using the same cooling gear. IBM developed a custom liquid cooling system for SuperMUC, Europe's most powerful supercomputer.
Cooling one or two components inside a PC is nothing compared to chilling a supercomputer with 18,000 Xeon processors. The accompanying 324TB of memory is also liquid-cooled. IBM refers to the cooling system as a "hot-water" design that can ...

7-inch Google tablet expected to launch next week
This is shaping up to be a momentous month for tablets. In the wake of Microsoft's Surface tablet announcement, DigiTimes reports that Google is about to announce a tablet jointly developed with Asus. That device, the site says, will premiere at the Google I/O developer conference next week, between June 27 and June 29.
Unlike the 10.6" Surface, Google's tablet—the Nexus—will apparently be a small, low-end product with a bargain-basement price tag. Quoting "sources from upstream component makers," DigiTimes says it expects the ...

TR BBQ IX to impact on August 11
Cancel your plans, raid the bank account, and saddle up the family truckster on the weekend of August 11th so you can attend the ninth annual TR BBQ event on the shores of Lake Michigan. Dr. Fish has dropped all of the details into this forum thread, including a pledge of an even larger raft this year, which I find difficult to imagine.
The TR BBQ is a most excellent gathering of folks from the forums and fans of the site, complete with actual barbecued ribs, swimming, a baggo/cornhole tourney, a hardware swap meet, swimming, a campfire on the beach, and endless talk of PC hardware, techniques for brewing beer, and anything else you might see discussed regularly ...
