Radeon HD 7990 to cost $849 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Dual GPU New Zealand slated for March

We got some extra details about the upcoming Radeon HD 7990, the dual-GPU successor to the Radeon HD 6990 and the price tag is not something that many will like.

Since AMD went on record telling the world that fastest single core Radeon HD 7970 will sell for $549 as of January 9th, the dual-core card will obviously get a significant price boost. It won’t cost as much as two Radeon HD 7970 cards, but AMD plans to sell this card for $849 and according to the current launch schedule it should appear in March 2012.

The packs 2x3GB GDDR5 memory running at 5GHz effective, along with two Tahiti chips clocked at 850MHz, which amounts to 2x2048 stream processors 2x128 texture memory units and 2x32ROPs.

These prices can easily change by launch date, but as of today, this is the planned spec and price. The card specification looks impressive and ambitious and so is the rest of 2012, the year of 28 nanometer graphics.

Android and iOS holiday activations hit all-time high :: Posted by THRASHER2
What recession?

According to analytics outfit Flurry, iOS and Android activations saw a huge spike on Christmas Day.

Activations for both platforms were averaging about 1.5 million units per day in early December, but on December 25 they peaked at a whopping 6.8 million. Android boss Andy Rubin confirmed 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the Christmas weeked.

App downloads followed the trend, hitting 242 million, up 125 percent from the 108 million average in December.

According to Flurry, Google makes an average 24 cents on each downloaded application, while Apple takes in about 300 percent more. In any case, most users are sticking with free, or utterly cheap apps.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000 apps :: Posted by THRASHER2
In 14 months

Redmond’s Windows Phone Marketplace has surpassed the 50,000 app milestone.

Of course, Android and iOS fans will probably boast that Apple’s and Google’s app depositories have more than 500,000 and 400,000 apps respectively, but that it beside the point.

The Windows Phone Marketplace has reached the 50,000 mark in the space of just 14 months, which is a pretty good result. It took Google 19 months to reach 50,000 months, while Apple managed in 12 months. What’s more, the trend is accelerating. It took Microsoft more than a year to hit the 40,000 mark, but the next 10,000 apps appeared in just 40 days.

Things are finally looking up for Windows Phone, and as one tech hack put it – it is probably the best mobile OS you’ve never tried.

AMD Radeon HD 7950 specs detailed :: Posted by THRASHER2
No precise core clock yet

According to a leaked slide over at XTReview.com, it appears that the Radeon HD 7950 will end up with a total of 1792 stream processors and same 3GB of GDDR5 memory paried up with a 384-bit memory interface.

Unfortunately, the leaked slide doesn't include the precise core clock or even the actual TDP of the card. According to the known specs, the HD 7950 aka. Tahiti Pro, will end up with a total of 28 GCN compute units, or simply 1792 stream processors. It will pack 112 texture units and 32 ROPs.

There have been some rumours regarding the precise clocks as these should end up at around 900MHz for the GPU but as always take these rumours with a pinch of salt. There has been also some rumours regarding the 1.5GB version of the HD 7950 but that one should come at a later date.

For now, the HD 7950 card is scheduled to be launched on January 9th with a price tag set at US $449, a good hundred bucks less than the HD 7970.

Intel and Kraft invent smart vending machine :: Posted by THRASHER2
Hitchikers' Guide gadget becomes real

Intel and Kraft have involved a "smart" vending machine that analyses users' age and gender so that they can trial people's interest in new products.

The iSample is being used to offer customers trials of a new dessert it means that the product can be tailored to the shopper, and exclude children from the adult-focused promotion. Intel says it intends to retrofit the technology to existing vending machines to allow companies to study what type of people are buying their products.

The machine uses an optical sensor fitted to the top of the machine to recognise the shape of the human face. A computer processor then carries out a series of calculations based on measurements such as the distance between the eyes, nose and ears.

This works out the sex of the shopper and place them in one of four age brackets. This data is then used to determine what, if any, product the shopper should be served.

It is not quite sure why it does this, because it always servers up something which is not "almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea." Actually it does not serve tea, but otherwise it is identical to the annoying vending machine which almost kills Arthur Dent in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Intel announces full release of Thunderbolt :: Posted by THRASHER2
April 2012

Intel has announced that its Thunderbolt technology will be fully released in April 2012. You may recall that the tech is already available, but only in overpriced Apple’s overpriced gear. You may also recall that Apple has no gear that isn’t overpriced.

Thunderbolt chips don’t come cheap though, in fact, they cost more than USD20. That, coupled with USB 3.0, didn’t quite make Thunderbolt popular with the industry, but Jobs’ mob has since created a strong demand for it.

The price of Thunderbolt technology is expected to drop in 2012, which should make it even more appealing. It is said that Sony , Asus and Gigabyte are ready to launch products featuring Thunderbolt around April 2012.

Medfield performance leaked, looks impressive :: Posted by THRASHER2
Scares the beejeesus out of Qualcomm, Nvidia

Intel is slowly starting to hype up its new Medfield chip, a 32nm SoC that should find its way into next generation tablets and smartphones next year.

According to VR Zone, the new chip looks like a world beater and it is faster than current ARM chips with Nvidia and Qualcomm stickers on them. In fact, a 1.6GHz Medfield scores about 10,500 in Caffeinemark 3, ahead of the Tegra 2 and Snapdragon MSM8260, which score 7500 and 8000 respectively. However, it’s worth noting that Nvidia and Qualcomm already have faster chips on their hands, i.e. Tegra 3 and S4.

VR is reporting that other performance figures also look quite good and Medfield should be quite competitive. However, in terms of power consumption it still lags behind ARM players. The prototype consumes about 2.6W in idle and Intel hopes to hit 2W by the time Medfield is ready for production. In 720p Flash playback, Medfield consumes 3.6W, and the target is 2.6W.

So, on paper Intel’s first proper SoC looks pretty good, although power consumption could be, or rather has to be better. In case Intel fails to shave off a watt or two, it will probably have a hard time in the smartphone market, but Medfield looks like a decent enough processor for tablets.

LG to roll out ICS updates in Q2 and Q3 :: Posted by THRASHER2
And a neat Windows phone for those who can’t wait

LG is joining the likes of Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola in announcing its Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule. In keeping with Android tradition, the updates will be painfully slow and not all devices will be covered.

LG plans to start rolling out updates for the LG Optimus LTE, Optimus 2X, Optimus Sol, its Prada phone and a couple of other handsets in Q2. Updates for the Optimus 3D, Optimus Black, Optimus Big, Optimus EX and Optimus Q3 will show up in Q3, just in time for nobody to care about them.

However, if you are in the market for a phone that won’t be obsolete by the time the next update rolls out, LG is also working on new Mango device. The LG Fantasy is said to feature a 4-inch IPS screen and it should appear at CES, with availability expected later in Q1.
