Borderlands sequel promises more diversity
Although I had a lot of fun with the original Borderlands, the endless grinding eventually turned me off the game. Collecting loot and leveling up are a big part of the Borderlands experience, but there just wasn't enough variety to hold my attention. I grew tired of picking up the countless items and weapons dropped by enemies only to learn that they were only slightly different than what I'd gathered previously. Fortunately, it looks like there will be a lot more variety on tap in the sequel, as Borderlands 2 Concept Designer Scott Kester explains in this video.

Luxury mouse rings in at $320
You've gotta have pretty big balls to charge $320 for a mouse—balls as big as the Sphere 2 wired mouse being hawked by the folks at Ore Objects. To be fair, only the platinum version costs $320. More affordable gold and titanium models are available for $290 and $185, respectively.

Where's my 21st-century television?
Gabe Newell said something that caught my eye the other day. As part of a broader interview with The Cambridge Student, Newell shared some powerful words of wisdom on the topic of piracy and copy protection:
Our goal is to create greater service value than pirates, and this has been successful enough for us that piracy is basically a non-issue for our company. For example, prior to ...

Asus readying convertible Windows 8 ultrabook?
One of the first companies to hop on the ultrabook bandwagon, Asus is now getting ready to sprinkle some tablet PC onto its ultrabooks. Quoting "industry sources," DigiTimes reports that Asus will unveil a Windows 8-based convertible ultrabook tablet at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan next June.
Word is that the machine will have a "swivel screen" and will become available together with Windows 8 in September. (I don't believe Microsoft has committed to a September launch, ...

High-DPI Samsung tablet may launch in February
Could Samsung beat Apple to the punch with a high-DPI tablet? Maybe not, but it sounds like it could come close. Boy Genius Report claims to have it on good authority that, in February, the Korean firm will release an 11.6" Android tablet with a whopping 2560x1600 display resolution.
The device will reportedly debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. That would pin its release between February 27 and March 1, 2012. BGR adds that the upcoming tablet will be "barely ...

Poll: What's the best PC game of 2011?
This holiday season has been a busy one on the PC gaming front. Looking back, so has the year as a whole. We've been treated to a myriad of releases spanning multiple genres, and a number of titles have been particularly good. Battlefield 3 and Portal 2 stand above all the rest for me, but I've not yet had the time to sink my teeth in a few of the other new games that have collected in my Steam folder. Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Batman: Arkham City are next in the queue, and both have received heaps of critical acclaim.
If you go by Metacritic scores alone , Portal 2 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim tie for best PC game of the year. We've assembled a larger list of options for our own best-of-2011 list, and you can vote ...

AMD-powered ultrabooks could debut next year
So far, Intel has an absolute monopoly on the ultrabook market. (You can even find the company's chips inside the MacBook Air, from which many ultrabook makers seem to draw inspiration.) That stranglehold may loosen next year, though. A report by The Australian says AMD's Australian arm "could unveil its first 'Ultrathin' line of notebooks in January"—and if that happens down under, chances are it'll happen up here in North America, too.
The site quotes Brian Slattery, AMD's Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, as saying AMD has been negotiating with "several manufacturers," and the position of one of those "was particularly advanced." Slattery noted that AMD is giving hardware makers more freedom to ...

HP to bring back $99 TouchPad... sort of
Remember how, after HP announced plans to nix webOS, TouchPad tablets flew off store shelves at $99 a pop? It looks like we're due for an encore. According to SlashGear, HP will stage a repeat of this summer's fire sale by peddling refurbished TouchPads on eBay for—you guessed it—$99.
The devices will go on sale at 6 PM CST on Sunday through HP's eBay store . SlashGear says says sales will be final, devices will have only 90 days of warranty coverage, and you'll ...

Android 4.0 sneaks onto the Kindle Fire
The Kindle Fire already comes with Android out of the box, but it's not the Android we know—it's a version of the operating system heavily customized by Amazon. Now, a Taiwanese app developer by the name of Steven Lin says he's managed to get the standard version of Android 4.0, otherwise known as Ice Cream Sandwich, running on the device. A video of his work went up on YouTube earlier today:

Serious Sam 3 pits pirates against invincible enemy
In the world of big-name PC games, DRM is largely unavoidable. Most copy protection schemes are annoying, some are tolerable, and others just make you laugh. The copy protection built into Serious Sam 3: BFE certainly falls into that third category. Folks who pirate the game will be greeted by a rather special bonus character.
