IBM demonstrates first Racetrack Memory chip
IBM on Monday announced at the IEEE conference that it has produced a working Racetrack Memory circuit , which could lead to chips with the capacity of hard drives, but the durability and performance of flash drives. The new non-volatile, solid-state memory could someday replace NAND flash, which is currently at the 20nm (nanometer) node size. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter.

Intel, Micron double density of NAND flash memory
Intel and Micron Tuesday announced that their joint NAND flash manufacturing venture will begin using a more dense circuitry that will allow a terabit of data, or 128 gigabytes, to fit on a fingertip. The joint venture, IMFT (IM Flash Technologies), said today it has created the world's first 20nm (nanometer), 128Gbit MLC (multilevel-cell) NAND flash die.

Intel patches flaw that allows hardware-based security feature bypass

IT outsourcing to China increases despite drawbacks
When it comes to information technology and business process outsourcing, China has been on a tear. Global services exports from China nearly tripled, from $1.2 billion in 2007 to $3.5 billion in 2010, with IT services accounting for 65 percent of the total, according to a report released this month by outsourcing consultancy and analyst firm Everest Group.

EFF asks mobile device vendors to stop opposing jailbreaking
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has asked the U.S. Copyright Office to exempt tablet and video game console jailbreaking from Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) provisions and asked vendors to stop opposing the practice. Jailbreaking, also known as rooting or chip modding, depending on the device it takes place on, refers to the bypassing of restrictions built in by manufacturers to prevent the installation of unauthorized software.

Texas Memory Systems unveils high availability flash array
Flash array vendor Texas Memory Systems (TMS) Tuesday released its first high-availability NAND flash array. The RamSan-720 array is targeted at hosting the highest performance, mission critical data. The new array has no single point of failure at both the hardware and management software level. The storage system includes redundant power supplies, dual RAID controllers, dual internal flash card interfaces, and memory battery backup.

Carrier IQ downplays 2010 patent request
A Carrier IQ executive Monday downplayed the significance of the company's effort to patent a technology it said can help wireless carriers undertake "advertising audience segmentation analysis and content copyright analytics." The company applied for a patent for the so-called Service Intelligence Module Program Product in March, 2010.

HP acquires Hiflex to bolster Web-based printing offerings
Hewlett-Packard has acquired the German company Hiflex Software to advance its Web-based printing business, it said on Tuesday.
