Seagate standardizes desktop drives on 1TB platters at 7,200 RPM
Solid-state drives may get all the attention these days, but big things are afoot in the world of mechanical storage. Seagate is completely revamping its line of Barracuda hard drives with the same 1TB platter technology used in its GoFlex external drives. New platters typically come to the 3.5" desktop world in low-power form, which means sluggish spindle speeds in the 5,400-RPM range—and slow access times to match. Seagate's own Barracuda LP has lived in that low-power space, and it's being phased out in favor of the incoming family of 7,200-RPM 'cudas.
Seagate claims low-power drives don't deliver meaningful power savings in desktop environments. The LP is being dropped to simplify the company's product mix—and to bring the performance benefits of 7,200-RPM spindle speeds to all, of course. Hitachi's recently announced Deskstar 7K1000.D ...

JPR: Sales of graphics-enabled chips grew last quarter
The latest figures for graphics-enabled silicon are in, and by Jon Peddie Research's count, the market grew by a healthy amount last quarter. Third-quarter shipments of graphics-enabled chips were up 16.7% compared to the previous quarter and 18.4% compared to the same quarter a year back. The firm comments, "Shipments during the third quarter of 2011 did (finally) behave according to past years with regard to seasonality, and [were] higher on a year-to-year comparison for the quarter."
JPR has also compiled some market share figures, which say Nvidia lost ground to both AMD and Intel last quarter. Of course, JPR's numbers put integrated and discrete graphics processors ...

Final Catalyst 11.10 drivers go live
Good news, Radeon users. The flood of hotfixes and preview releases is over—for this month, at least. AMD has released the final version of its Catalyst 11.10 graphics drivers, which got the nod from Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs and can be downloaded now from AMD's Support & Drivers page.
The "new features" section of the official release notes is blank, but AMD said earlier this month that the final 11.10 Catalysts would ...

Battlefield 3 simulator built by The Gadget Show
Think you've been playing Battlefield 3 on a pretty nice system? Odds are it's got nothing on the rig assembled by the folks at The Gadget Show. ASRock shows off four X79 motherboards
Hear that rumbling in the distance? That's the sound of Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge-E processor, whose impending arrival has motherboard makers eager to show off their X79 wares. In the wee hours of this morning, an email hit my inbox with a stack of pictures detailing ASRock's upcoming X79 mobos. We don't have a list of specficiations or features to go along with the gallery, but we do have some high-res shots of no fewer than four different models. Let's start with the X79 Extreme9, which looks to be the most exotic of the quartet:

Asus' Zenbook UX31 ultrabook
The word "ultrabook" seems to be on everyone's lips lately. Ever since Intel's May 31 announcement at Computex, we've been treated to an endless deluge of rumors and reports about what upcoming ultrabooks will look like, how much they'll cost, which manufacturers plan to have the first systems out the door, and whether we'll see any Hello Kitty-branded models.
What is an ultrabook? Intel defines this new category of systems as "thin, light and beautiful designs that are less than 21mm (0.8 inch) thick, and [positioned] at mainstream prices." We were told at Computex that Intel aims for ultrabooks to cost ...

Paper says HP will kill webOS; HP calls report 'unfounded'
A lot of folks breathed a sigh of relief when HP said it would hold on to its PC business last week. The company's webOS software is still in limbo, though. The uncertainty surrounding that operation is breeding talk that HP could kill off webOS entirely, although HP claims it's still in the process of deciding the software's fate.
On Friday, British paper The Guardian said it had word ...

Report: Ultrabook sales are lower than expected
Given all the hype that's surrounded ultrabooks these past few months, I was a little surprised to run into this story at DigiTimes. According to it (or, at least, the unnamed channel sources quoted within), word is that Asus' and Acer's ultrabook shipments won't meet expectations for the year.
Shipments for the two companies were expected to total 200,000-300,000 units in 2011, but they may only reach 100,000, DigiTimes ...
