Sony unveils Android based S and P tablets at IFA 2011
IFA 2011 - Sony just got done with one of the first major press conferences of IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany where as expected they unveiled two Android tablets.

Additionally, both tablets will come with cross-device connectivity that allows you to use your tablet to control your Sony Bravia television and stream movies etc to it from within your house. Clearly Sony has worked hard to leverage all of its business units into its tablet line including games, movies, TV shows and Sony brand music. One of the last lines delivered was, "so much to enjoy". It seems like it - you'll have to wait a little bit longer and then we'll find out for sure.

Windows 8 will include native ISO mounting support
Microsoft are finally adding native ISO mounting support to their upcoming OS, Windows 8. Microsoft have said that in Windows 8, double-clicking an ISO file will automatically mount it as a virtual optical drive. This works in the same way Daemon Tools and Power ISO work, which I have used for the better part of my life. Microsoft will also built in support for Virtual Hard Disk files that are used with virtual machines.

How will game companies react? Only time will tell... piracy still does, rule. Even though game revenue is higher than ever, I'm sure people like Cevat Yerli from Crytek will... cry about this news.

OpenDNS and Google combine powers, speed up the web
American internet users rejoice! YouTube requests might get delivered faster today with Google, OpenDNS and several content delivery networks announcing the Global Internet Speed Up effort. Finding ways to speed up the internet and deliver ever-increasing high quality streaming and downloads to users across the globe is getting harder. The Speed Up effort tries to dodge around this by making sure a user's request for content goes to a server near it, making delivery faster and more efficient from a bandwidth perspective.

This way, the domain system server can route the request to a Google data center in Dallas, as opposed to one in Ireland. A simple solution, but would net great gains for people who have servers close to them. The new code goes into effect on Tuesday with 30 million OpenDNS users and Google's Public DNS service users visiting content hosted on the participating CDNs will immediately benefit.

iTunes 10.5 Beta 6.1, includes iTunes Match
Apple has seeded iTunes Beta 6.1 to developers in the US, it includes a new feature you should be on the look out for, iTunes Match. iTunes match allows users to upload music to Apple's beta service of iCloud. This will allow users to store their entire collection online in the iCloud for $25 per year. It also has something quite nifty, say you own an album and it's on your computer - but this album is also on the iTunes servers, it will shift it from the servers to your iCloud account. This saves valuable time and most importantly, bandwidth.

If you want to get your mits on iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1, you'll need to be an Apple developer which is a $99 per annum fee.

The secret herbs and spices of this product is IO Turbine's software that helps virtualized servers manage their access to Flash memory, and enables companies to put workloads such as databases that require fast access to memory in the cloud.

It just so happens IO Turbine's software can do that, the software works with any solid state drive that uses flash (or even hard drives) and Fusion-io will offer it bundled with its components or on a standalone basis.

OCZ Technology RevoDrive 3 X2 PCI-E 480GB SSD Review
Final Thoughts
On the hardware side of things OCZ has put together a good package that will be able to deliver solid performance when all of the pieces are in place. We found a few short comings, though, some of which we haven't discussed yet.
The new VCA 2.0 architecture has some issues with some motherboards. A fairly good sized list is available of boards that work. This list also shows a number that do not work and as you can imagine with the massive amount of motherboards on the market, several are not listed in either category. I went through and starting plugging the RevoDrive 3 X2 in boards I had sitting around and it was hit and miss when it came to the older X58 boards even after firmware updates. My P67 and Z68 boards all worked fine which is really good news for those that buy new motherboards often. The X58 was the last real enthusiast motherboard and many users are still holding on to them until X79 shows up, me including on my own gaming system.
For the life of me I can't figure out why OCZ would choose to pair the RevoDrive 3 products with asynchronous flash. The only thing I can guess about it is that everyone over there bought into the idea that async flash only has an adverse effect on compressed data performance and no effect on how a drive performs when data is populating the drive. No matter the reason, this is the RevoDrive we have for 2011 and at least half of 2012.
The final issue is of course with TRIM. Even with async flash the RevoDrive 3 X2 480GB that we tested today is damn fast. You are going to need TRIM to keep it that way or you'll be running OCZ Tool to keep the drive running well. Microsoft, please make it happen and make it happen before Windows 8.
Even with the issues mentioned above, there are some really good uses for the RevoDrive 3 Series as they sit right now. This is a workstation product after all, so you don't need to boot from it and without TRIM you might want to keep it as a secondary drive anyhow. Doing so will allow you to keep the data and files you're working with at the time, like say an audio production or video files for splicing and editing sequences together. When you are finished with one project you can purge the data or put it back in long term storage (NAS server), clean the drive with OCZ Tool and then start on the next. This will allow you to keep the performance high while also keeping your RevoDrive 3 uncluttered.
Once TRIM or SCSI unmap is ready for prime time, nearly all the limitations are taken off the table and you are left with one very fast SSD that fits nicely into a PCIe slot and runs without wires. The performance offered is quite a bit more than you can get from a motherboard /RAID array alone and the cost is comparable when you add an add-on RAID controller like the LSI 9265 Series into the mix.

Rugby World Cup 2011 PlayStation 3 Review

The first one out of the blocks is the officially licensed game from HB Studios who some of you may recognise from the previous Rugby games. HB Studios were the team that built the EA rugby games over the years, but with EA not releasing a rugby game for the World Cup, it was up to a lesser known publisher, 505 Games to run with it. However, those who played HB Studios' previous games and loved the way they played will be happy to know that the formula is pretty much the same this time around, and this is in our opinion both a pro and a con.

Another quirk with the game is that whilst being the official game of the Rugby World Cup, not all the teams are licensed. Australia and New Zealand are not officially in the game and despite featuring the official kits, the players' names and likeness are not present. Given that New Zealand is number one in the world right now and probably the world's most famous rugby team, this is quite astonishing. Can you imagine a FIFA World Cup game without all the teams officially licensed? It makes zero sense that a developer can obtain the official licence for a tournament, but not all the teams. We don't blame HB Studios for this debacle, but for Australian and New Zealand fans it will be disappointing.
Moving onto the gameplay, as we said before it really has not changed since the 2007 product in many ways and this comes with pros and cons. The first major improvement we noticed is that it is a lot harder to gain the ball back on defence now. You have to tackle players in a particular way and 'turn' them just like in real rugby. It's no longer just a button mashing mess, there is strategy to it and in fact, if you button mash too much, penalties will be awarded against you. However, other than that the problems which were present in the game in 2007 are still here.
Most of the time to score a try, it's a matter of passing to the winger bursting down the sideline and throwing an inside pass. There is nothing wrong with this inherently, rugby is a very fast paced game, but given that the game does not feature super rugby, there could have been more focus on improving the gameplay even further.
There are also a few things which appear to have been left out since the last game. First of all, you seem to be able to do high tackles as much as you like because as much as you will be penalised, there does not appear to be yellow or red cards in the game which is puzzling given you could get sent off last time around. As well as this, the 'sliders' to configure the game are less this time around as well. Instead of being able to increase fatigue and injury occurance, it's now just a matter of yes and no. Given that they had quite a solid base to build upon (EA Rugby was in general very good), it is puzzling that in many ways the game has gone backwards.

Visually the game is impressive. HB Studios have recreated all the stadiums the World Cup games will take place in and for anyone that has visited these stadiums, you will recognise some of the quirks of each stadium. Westpac Stadium for example from Wellington looks exactly like it does on the television and in person. The animation of the players has improved as well and the big hits are harder than ever, but there are still some quirks which have flowed through from 2007 where the player will be up on his feet then all of a sudden hit the ground without a tackle or kick animation.

Rugby World Cup 2011 The Game is not a bad game, but in many aspects it is disappointing. There is no doubt that HB Studios has put together a decent playing game of rugby, but given their previous games, it's a real shame to not see options such as the Super Rugby included. After the World Cup finishes we can't see players coming back to this too often and that is why it is hard to recommend, even as a rugby fan. With more rugby games on the horizon it might be worth waiting it out to ensure you get the best one. That may in fact turn out to be Rugby World Cup 2011 The Game, but we will have to wait and see.

Renesas Announces the World's First USB 3.0 to SATA 6 Gb/s Bridge SoC
Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced the availability of its new SuperSpeed Universal Serial Bus (USB 3.0) SATA3 bridge system-on-chip ([SoC], part number, µPD720230) that enables data transfer between a USB3.0 host system and a Serial ATA (SATA) device in external USB storage equipment. The new SoC is the world's first USB 3.0 Bridge SoC that supports the UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) protocol that significantly speeds up data throughput for large volumes of data.
USB 3.0 achieves data transfer speeds more than 10 times faster than the previous version of the standard, USB 2.0 (currently the mainstream data transfer technology) and therefore easily supports the growing need for increased data-recording media capacities. Renesas has led the industry by releasing the µPD720200 USB 3.0 host controller in May 2009 and began mass production in June that same year. Since then, the company's lineup of USB 3.0 host controllers has been widely adopted by customers worldwide. Total shipments of these products have already exceeded 40 million units since May 2010, and Renesas has ramped up production of its USB 3.0 host controllers to 6 million units per month. During this period, the company also released in December 2009 a UASP driver that achieves high-speed data transfers for storage devices by improving the performance limit of the BOT (Bulk-Only Transfer) standard used by USB 2.0, making it possible for external storage devices to take advantage of the increased speed offered by the new USB 3.0 standard.

In addition to Renesas USB 3.0 host controllers, the UASP driver operates with AMD's A70M and A75 chipsets, which has been made possible through close cooperation with AMD. Renesas also plans on achieving compatibility with AMD's future USB3-supporting chipsets.
Key features of the new µPD720230 SoC:
- Support for SATA Revision 3.0 enables 6 Gbps high-speed data transfer:
The µPD720230 USB 3.0-SATA3 bridge SoC supports SuperSpeed USB transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps)-as well as the SATA Revision 3.0 6Gbps bit rate achieving maximum data transfer performance of USB 3.0.
- Supports both the UASP and BOT protocols and achieves data transfer performance that exceeds 370 megabytes per second (MB/s) in UASP mode:
In addition to the BOT standard for mass storage devices using USB 2.0, it also supports the UASP protocol standardized in USB 3.0 for improving the performance limits of the BOT standard. When connected to an SSD that supports 6 Gbps SATA3, the µPD720230 device achieves data transfer performance in excess of 370 MB/s in UASP mode as verified by the ATTO Disk Benchmark, version 2.46.
- Realizes miniaturization and reduced power consumption of the end products:
The µPD720230 USB 3.0 SATA3 SoC is provided in a 48-pin QFN package, incorporates a voltage regulator, and also supports bus power modes, which contribute to miniaturization of the end products.
Although only two states, the U0 normal state and the U3 suspend state were stipulated in the USB 2.0 standard, the USB 3.0 standard also stipulates the U1 and U2 power states to provide even finer-grained suppression of power consumption. The new USB 3.0 SATA3 SoC reduces overall power consumption by approximately 40 percent (when the system is in the idle state) via the new USB 3.0 U1 and U2 power states, as compared to when stipulating only the U0 and U3 power states.
Additionally, the USB 3.0 is capable of supporting data transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is 10 times faster than the previous USB 2.0 transfer speeds. Therefore, the USB 3.0 can reduce the data transferring time to 10 percent from that of the USB 2.0 and automatically extends the idle time. As a result, by stipulating the U1 and U2 power states, the new SoC realizes even more power conservation effect.
- The Renesas UASP driver is tested to ensure compatibility with Renesas' USB 3.0 host controllers and AMD's PC motherboard integration of the USB 3.0 interface:
Renesas' UASP driver runs not only on the Renesas µPD720200 USB 3.0 host controller and its follow-on products, the µPD720200A, µPD720201 and µPD720202, but also on AMD's A70M and A75 chipsets based on a cooperative agreement with AMD, as well as others. In addition, Renesas also plans on achieving compatibility with future AMD USB3-supporting chipsets with this driver.
- Renesas UASP driver is available for license to companies making USB 3.0 to SATA3 bridge devices:
A license of Renesas' UASP driver is included with the company's µPD720230 USB 3.0 to SATA3 Bridge and is available for license to other SATA bridge manufacturers. Renesas has already concluded a licensing agreement with Japanese LSI supplier Media Logic.
"Through AMD's collaboration with Renesas, we were first in industry to offer integrated UASP via our USB3-enabled chipsets supporting our A-Series APU platforms," said Godfrey Cheng, Director of the Client Technology Unit at AMD. "AMD customers will enjoy fully-validated support for Renesas µPD720230 USB 3.0 SATA3 SOC supporting UASP technology."

Samples of Renesas Electronics' µPD720230 device are available now, priced at $3.5 per unit. Mass production is scheduled to begin in October 2011 with a combined production volume of 500,000 units per month expected. (Pricing and availability are subject to change without notice.)
