Senate approves major patent system overhaul
The U.S. Senate has voted to approve a major overhaul of the nation's patent system, with the legislation allowing a new kind of challenge to patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.The America Invents Act would also allow the USPTO to set fees for patents. The bill, potentially establishing the first major changes to the U.S. patent system in five decades, will give the USPTO enough money to whittle down a backlog of 700,000 patent applications, supporters said.

Apple wins permanent ban on German sales of Samsung tablet
Samsung must not sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany because it looks too much like Apple's iPad 2, the district court in Dusseldorf ruled on Friday.In addition, Samsung Germany may not sell the device in any other European Union country, although other Samsung divisions may sell into those countries, a spokesman at the court said.

Microsoft plans 15 patches for Windows, Office next week
Microsoft today said it will dispense five security updates next week to patch 15 vulnerabilities in Windows, Excel, SharePoint Server, and Groove. All five updates will be rated "important," the second-highest threat ranking in Microsoft's four-step system.

Comodohacker claims he can exploit Windows Update
The hacker who calls himself "Comodohacker" said this week that he could have used digital certificates stolen from a Dutch firm to issue fake updates to Windows PCs. If Comodohacker's assertion is accurate, he would have been able to push malware to Windows machines via the operating system's Windows Update service.

Judge wants Google and Oracle CEOs to sit down for mediation talks
The judge overseeing the dispute between Oracle and Google "strongly recommends" that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Google CEO Larry Page be ordered to attend mediation. That means the judge wasn't happy with Oracle's suggestion that it would send its president, Safra Catz, or with Google's plan to send Andy Rubin, head of its mobile operation, to a court mediation session.
