ASRock goes big, releases PCI-Express 3.0-supporting Z68 :: Posted by THRASHER2
ASRock has one-upped MSI and pretty much all its rivals by releasing the very first motherboard that supports the PCI-Express 3.0 standard. The board in question is named Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 and it supports Intel Sandy Bridge (LGA1155) processors (Ivy Bridge CPU support is also planned).

The big thing about PCIe 3.0 is that it can provide a bandwidth of 1GB/s per lane, whereas PCI 2.x can only top 500 MB/s. Now, since the PCI-Express 3.0 standard isn’t supported by the Z68 chipset, ASRock had to add a PLX PEX8608 bridge chip and make some tweaks to deliver such an implementation. For official PCIe 3.0 support we’ll have to wait for motherboards based around Intel’s X79 (LGA2011) and 7 Series (LGA1155) chipsets.

Back to the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 though, this board has two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots and one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot that work together to allow for Quad-SLI or 3-way CrossFireX setups (LucidLogix’s Virtu technology is also supported). Other goodies include 18-phase digital PWM, four DDR3-2133 memory slots, ten SATA 3.0 Gbps ports (we’re guessing the six red ones are SATA 6.0 Gbps while the rest are 3.0 Gbps), and support for the Intel Smart Response technology.

ASRock’s motherboard also features four USB 3.0 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet, an eSATA connector, 7.1 channel audio, a debug LED, a Fatal1ty USB Mouse Port (allows polling rate adjustment from 125 Hz to 1000 Hz), and D-Sub, and dual HDMI (1.4) outputs.

Unfortunately, despite ASRock’s bragging about the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 going ‘on sale now’, we haven’t found it in stores.

Google+ takes on Facebook at its own game :: Posted by THRASHER2
Hopefully more innovative than name suggests

Google’s new social networking service is currently undergoing “field tests” by a limited number of users and the first impressions are largely positive.

Dubbed Google+, the service is still a bit rough around the edges but it appears to show promise. Sadly, you can experience it firsthand only through invites, so most users will have to wait for the official launch.

The user interface is intuitive and it can import all your information in various Google services with ease. This is good, as it shouldn’t take much time to set up your account and import Picasa photos. Setting up a personal profile is also pretty straightforward, nothing to brag about.

Unlike Facebook, Google+ organizes your contacts into circles and for a start it imports all of your Gmail info. The circles concept is rather interesting, as it is designed to closely mimic real life relationships. For example, it allows you to organize your friends into various groups or circles, i.e. family, work, drinking buddies etc.

Kepler 28nm taped out :: Posted by THRASHER2
Works well

The successor to Nvidia’s Fermi architecture, a certain GPU that goes by the name Kepler has already been taped out.

We have multiple sources to confirm that the new 28nm chip is alive and that it looks quite well. Nvidia didn't have any major obstacles with the first tape out, but naturally there is still a lot of work to seal the leakage, and make the chip generally better. This is nothing unusual for a new chip, and getting from 40nm to 28nm is definitely not a walk in a park.

Kepler naturally gets a lot of changes to Nvidia's GPU and you can imagine that with the same maximal TDP, you can squeeze significantly more transistor and get much more power.

The optimistic projection is to see Kepler in retail in Q4 2011 but some sources suggest that this won't actually happen this year, as TSMC needs a bit more time to make the 28nm more mature.

Aspyr, over the years, has converted and ported a number of bestselling PC titles to the Mac platform, and apparently Duke Nukem Forever will be no different. These are ultraslim, ultralight laptops, as well as hybrid designs such as the Asus UX21 and Apple's MacBook Air. Haswell-based Ultrabooks will be about $599 and will not require graphics silicon from companies like Nvidia.
