Sapphire supes up the EDGE-HD with second iteration
We really loved what the first iteration of Sapphire's EDGE-HD mini PC had to offer when checking it out around the time of launch. It was small, light, offered great performance with effortless HD playback and came in at a great price.

Further to the faster CPU, it sports a larger 320GB HDD (vs the 250GB on the original), 2GB of RAM, NVIDIA ION 2 GPU with 512MB VRAM, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a couple USB 2.0 ports, card reader, D-Sub and HDMI outputs.
This little powerhouse consumes less than 30W at full load, so it's quite an attractive option for those that find it easier just to leave the unit connected to the TV and running 24 / 7. Sapphire gives the option of purchasing with Windows 7 Ultimate or FreeDOS pre-installed.
Pricing is said to be a little steep off the bat, with the Windows 7 packed variant coming in a little over €350 in Europe.

DDR4 to make a 2014 debut, takes DDR3 over by 2015
iSuppli have come out and said that DDR3 modules will remain the dominant DRAM tech throughout 2011 and flowing right into 2012, 2013 and even into 2014 before DDR 4 arrives in its next-generation glory. DDR3 RAM currently represents 85 to 90-percent of today's DRAM market and that will swell to 94-percent by 2013. But in 2014, iSuppli is predicting that DDR4 will emerge out of the flames of the DRAM market with a 12-percent share, within a year they expect this number to expand to 56-percent leading DDR3 with just 42-percent of the market.

Intel Cloverview platform should be arriving in time for Windows 8
Intel's new x86 Atom architecture dubbed 'Cloverview', is set to launch before Windows 8 hits shelves early next year. Intel's Director of Product and Technology Media Relations, Bill Korcos has said the Atom Clover Trail and its Cloverview processor are designed to work with Windows 8 and it will be a "nice one-two chip-software punch."

Cloverview will be one of Intel Atom's first 32nm-based chips and is intended for tablets, which is great because the shrink is set to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. There is of course the Cedar Trail and Medfield which are prepped for netbooks and phones/tablets respectively. NVIDIA and ARM have some competition against their Kal-El and Cortex A15 products. Can Intel win? We will have to wait and see!

Google+ launched, social networking gets rebooted
Google+ has been launched today and it is quite the bundle of joy. Included are multiple parts which create one large social networking web of connectivity, social fun and constant information on friends and more specifically the friends you want to know your whereabouts or specific posts.

Included are four major sections, +Circles, +Sparks, +Hangouts, +Mobile. First off +Circles is all about sharing what matters, to those who mean the most to you. Not all relationships and friendships are equal, +Circle allows you to create a "circle" which allows you to add the people you want to it and share what's new or something cool you found online. Instead of going out to all of your friends at once.

+Sparks allows you to strike up a conversation about, well, pretty much anything. Sparks delivers a feed of content from the internet in any topic you want across 40 languages. All you have to do is add your interests and Sparks will find relavant links and info on what you want to look at, again with the right circle of friends.

Next up is +Hangouts. +Hangouts is somewhere you can go when you're bored, alone, or just want some quality time with people in your +Circle. +Hangouts allows face-to-face video chat, also included is multi-person video for that bored group of friends. Want to catch up for a drink but live too far away, maybe interstate or overseas? Grab your +Circle of friends and +Hangout!

+Mobile is probably the most obvious, especially since Google have their Android-based smartphones and tablets available. Most people have a phone and they really are the perfect sharing accessory, it's always with you, it's always online and allows Google+ to give you some very cool things to do. Google+ adds your location to every post, so people will know where you are in case they may be walking by, or want to catch up.

Instant Upload allows you to take pictures on your smartphone and it adds your photos to a private album in the cloud. They're available on all of your devices, ready to go whenever you want.
+Huddle is a group messaging service that lets everyone within your circle to know what's going on, right now. It's handy as most people are usually on different schedules, families, time zones or in totally different places. +Huddle allows quick communication amongst your circle.
Google+ is available on the Android Market and the mobile web and will be available on the App Store soon. Right now it's a Field Trial and is by invitation only. Google, can TweakTown get some hookups please? ;)

Cooler Master NotePal Infinite EVO Notebook Cooler Review

I have seen just about every variation on materials, angles, bling and fans in what is readily available on the market in notebook cooling products. From the days of a beanbag strapped to a piece of wood, set on your lap, just to keep the heat away, cooling tech has come a long way. The frame materials are either a choice of aesthetic appeal, or you go with plastic due to budgetary reasons. Either way is no better than the other, as long as the frame is sturdy and vibration free. The lighting and hocus pocus that sells some coolers, doesn't need apply really. For the down to basics idea of "cooling" the laptop, "bling" does very little to cool anything. So essentially it all comes down to the fan or fans in the unit that are going to make the biggest difference in any notebook cooler.
Even as far as fans go, I really thought I had seen it all. 80mm fan, 120mm fans, all the way up to a single 20mm fan; I have tested them all as far as standard fans go. If I remember correctly, I even tested a cooler with a rather large "squirrel cage" style fan that was the size of a hamster wheel. I also recall that that fan idea didn't work out too well and offered very little in the way of actual cooling to the laptop. This time around Cooler Master uses a blower style fan, or rather a pair of them, to do the cooling in the notebook cooler we received for testing.
With all the major components of a notebook cooler in place with this cooler, it offers all the usual suspects. The ability to turn on or off the unit, speed control of the fans inside the unit, attractive looks, USB 2.0 and a mini USB to power the unit; in the end it comes down to cooling with all of these laptop coolers. So let's dive right in and see if the blower fan idea of the Cooler Master Infinite EVO should demand your hard earned dollar over the competition!

Building on the success of its first Mini PC, hailed as the smallest PC in the world, SAPPHIRE Technology - the world leading manufacturer and supplier of PC graphics cards and mainboards has just introduced a new model - the SAPPHIRE EDGE-HD2. The SAPPHIRE EDGE-HD2 shares the same slim, stylish outline as the earlier model but delivers slightly higher performance and is now also available with a pre-loaded operating system. At less than half a litre in volume, it is slimmer and smaller than most wireless access points - in fact around the size of a paperback book! Its stylish design and simple pedestal mount make it equally at home next to a TV or business monitor whilst occupying the minimum of desk or shelf space.

Despite its small size, the SAPPHIRE EDGE-HD2 is a fully featured PC for home, education or business use. MSI Debuts Dazzling CX480 Multimedia Notebook
MSI unveiled its new generation CX480 laptop, with your choice of black, white, or summery blue as well as MSI's own flat brush finish for an all-new youthfully chic exterior. The new color film print technology gives it character and natural refinement that make it stand out from the crowd. The CX480 is the perfect mobile companion when you're enjoying some summer rays.

Brush metal finish: The CX480 has a brush metal finish that exudes a metallic luster, a touch pad with crystal diamond finish, and embedded speakers with layered design. The resultant stylish looks, reminiscent of a sophisticated sports car, make the CX480 stand out from the pack. Pick your color: In addition to black and white, the CX480 also comes in summer blue-a breezy change from the run-of-the mill NBs out there. Now, you can enjoy a notebook computer that brings you summer all year round.

Boots up twice as fast
Intel 2nd generation Core i CPUs: The CX480 comes equipped with your choice of Intel's second generation Core i5-2410 (2.30GHz) or Core i3-2310 (2.10GHz) processor for superior performance. The CX480 also comes with MSI's own boot up technology which gets it up and running in half the time required by conventional laptops. The CX480 can also be preset so that when you flip open the lid with the power off, the laptop will immediately start booting up without the need to push the power button, saving time and increasing convenience. *Actual boot up speeds will vary with user settings.
GPU Boost: The CX480 features the nVidia GeForce GT520M discrete graphics card with 1GB of DDR3 display memory and supports DirectX 11 for enhanced performance. What's more, the automatic graphics switching in MSI's GPU Boost technology kicks them over to discrete graphics card mode to kick graphics processing up a notch or two. When performing general word processing tasks or surfing the Internet, it automatically cuts to the power-sipping integrated graphics chip mode, striking the ideal balance between performance and battery life.
Enhanced data protection
Time Stamp backup and restoration: Data backup and restoration are no longer a hassle with MSI's Time Stamp software. With one touch of a finger this new application backs up or restores data on the CX480 in seconds. You can set Time Stamp to back up automatically and it only takes ten seconds to finish data backup. You don't even have to turn your computer on to execute system restoration and get your computer back into tiptop health.
Air tight protection: Traditionally, hard drives are located in one corner of laptops, so if a laptop is dropped, there's a good chance the hard drive is going to be seriously damaged. With this in mind, MSI made a point of placing the hard drive away from corners to further safeguard the CX480. MSI also packed the hard drive in reinforced protection to form a sort of air bag, providing protection against shock.
Latest technologies for up to 8.5 hours on battery
ALS: The CX480 features ALS (ambient light system) which adjusts screen brightness from among 16 brightness levels depending on the ambient lighting, so your eyes don't feel fatigued even when you use the screen for long periods. It also extends battery time when the computer is in standby mode. In addition, the CX480 comes with MSI's own ECO engine power saving technology, so you can initiate Turbo Battery to significantly extend battery time with just one touch.
8.5 hours of battery power and fast recharge: Tests have shown that with a 6 cell battery, the CX480 can operate for as long as 8.5 hours on battery power. MSI's exclusive technology recharges it in half the time of traditional laptops. About 60 minutes is all you need to recharge to at least 80%. And so you can stay on top of battery charge status, MSI placed a set of four lights above the CX480's keyboard to the left. Four lights indicate fully charged, while three lights mean you have 70% battery power left. *Actual battery life and the time required to recharge the battery will vary with settings and how the laptop is used.
Friendly design
Intuitive smart function and instant scenario change key: Just press the "Fn" key and a window pops up, showing you frequently used functions, including screen brightness, volume, webcam, wireless network, mute, and standby. Now, turning on/off and adjusting functions is a breeze. What's more, simply depressing the function key twice lets you instantly switch wallpaper for various scenarios, such as work, meetings, personal, and home. The CX480's keyboard boasts greater responsiveness, so when you type, you can feel the keys respond, giving the keyboard a more solid feel.
Clutter-free design and all new heat dissipation design: The new generation CX480 laptop's all-new heat dissipation design places heat generating parts and components, like the processor, chipset, and graphics card, in the upper left corner of the chassis. The thermal block structural design then concentrates heat in that same area, so that the palm rest areas maintain a temperature on par with that of the human body to ensure comfort of use. Furthermore, traditional computer cable connector designs do not take user convenience into consideration, so cables tend to get in the way. MSI made it a point to put frequently used slots, like the USB 3.0 and HDMI, on the left side of the computer, while the DVD player is on the right to provide an obstruction-free area for the mouse.
One-touch BIOS updates: Updating BIOS is now easier than ever. MSI's new generation CX480 employs an all-new BIOS update system which allows you to automatically update BIOS under a Windows OS environment with one touch of the BIOS button. No more complicated steps.
Multimedia stereo sound
SRS PC Sound cinema-grade sound: The CX480 comes with new generation SRS PC Sound for natural wrap around, high fidelity sound whether you use the built-in speakers, external ones, or headsets. This machine is designed to satisfy your craving for crisp, clear sound.

AVADirect Now Offers GTX 580M in Gaming Notebooks
Twinsburg, OH - June 28th 2011
AVADirect, a leading custom computer integrator, has begun offering the GTX 580 mobile graphics card for sale on its website. AVADirect is one of the first outlets to offer the GTX 580M in Clevo P150HM. P170HM, and X7200 gaming notebook models. AVADirect has already begun taking orders as of today and plans to ship out the notebooks with dedicated GTX 580M graphics cards to expecting customers within their standard advertised time frame.
The new mobile graphics card will assist in closing the gap between desktop performance and mobile performance offered in notebooks. As opposed to previous mobile graphics cards, that had larger footprints and consumed larger amount of power, the GTX 580M card will provide the exact opposite. The GTX 580M has a smaller foot print than the GTX 485M, and consumes less power. The GTX 580M is based off of the same MXM module as the previous 400M series graphics card, so virtually any notebook that supported the 400M series will receive the ability to upgrade to the 500M series graphic cards. Notebook hardware is entering ground-breaking territory by continuously keeping notebook hardware to date by keeping similar hardware specifications, die sizes, and interfaces.
By using the new GTX 580 series mobile graphics card combined with the X58 and P67 mobile chipsets it removes a majority of the data bandwidth limitations that all mobile platforms have suffered from ever since their existence. The benefits of DDR3 RAM did not show early on in development, but as technology begins to advance the IT industry begins to see the true colors of DDR3. AVADirect's new Sandy Bridge notebooks have the capability to run DDR3 SODIMM RAM at 1600Mhz stable. Both the X58 and P67 mobile chipsets also provide built-in HDMI outputs for LCD connectivity and other large displays. USB 3.0 port are now standard with all Clevo models that offer the GTX 580M. Last but not least, the mobile P67 Clevo models mentioned also feature SATA 6Gb/s ports to power and utilize SATA 6Gb/s devices to full advantage. To receive the full performance benefit of the increased bandwidth end-users will want to consider using a solid state disk as their primary operating system drive, and a secondary hard disk for data storage. This setup has become a standard in a majority of hardware setups to date.
